Subject : Methods for disinfection of drinking water.

A committee constituted by Addi. Chief Secretary, PHED vide

No. 1262 dated 22.06.2011 under the chairmanship of Chief Engineer
(SP), PHED and five other members to examine tHe techno-economics
of various methods of disinfection of drinking '. w~ter submitted
recommendation on suitability of particular method !of disinfection for
various water supply schemes of the department; _; . The

Planning Committee (PPC) held on 27.09.2011 at agenda item· No. 35.

Accordingly a policy decision has been taken by PPC regarding 'method
to be adopted for disinfection of drinking water in the department as
per quantum of water to be treated, location where water to be
treated mentioned as under :-

• In rural/ urban water supply schemes/ distribution centers

handling up to 0.5 MLD of water, chlorination .shall be done witb
Bleaching Powder. Proper storage, handling, mixinq and ·dosir;1g
of Bleaching Powder shall be ensured as per guidelines
prescribed in CPHEEO Manual of GoI and as issued . by the . •' f

department from time to time.

• For water supply scheme with direct pumping •to distribution

system from a tube well, chlorination shall be done by lrijetting
Hypochlorite Solution. : · · l<• . _.:!).

• In water treatment plant or headwork's handling more thar( 0'.5

MLD of water and located outside habitations (at least 0.5 KM),
chlorination shall be done by Liquid Chlorine. · Propeir storage,
handling and dosing of Liquid Chlorine and related safely

• In water supply headworks with more than 0.5 MLD supply and
located in thickly populated urban areas having regular · power
supply, chlorination shall be done using Electro-Chlorinator.

needed within one month. He shall be responsible for any
happening of water pollution incident due to noh ado tion of
