III. MOTIVATION:

Pull out a Php 100 bill and show it to the kids. Be as dramatic with this as possible.
Watch everyone react for a moment and refuse to give anyone else the money. Then
ask the kids how did it make you feel when someone gave you money, and the other
kids did not receive money?

Who knows what the word “Jealousy” means? ( Wanting something that someone else
has.)

You probably all wanted that One Hundred Pesos Bill, right?

But we can be Jealous for lots of things. Have you ever wanted a toy or a cool-looking
shirt or something that someone else had? Or maybe your brother or sister got a treat
or something that you didn’t and you wished that thing was yours. Maybe someone got
a good grade on their test in school and you were mad at them because you didn’t get a
good grade. Maybe you saw someone with a really nice house and you wished it was
your house. Or you saw a girl who you thought was really pretty and you wished you
were that pretty. Those are all examples of wanting what someone else has. That’s
what it means to be jealous.

In our story today, an older brother is Jealous of a younger brother.

IV. LESSON PROPER
Bible Reference : Genesis Chapter 4:1-18

After God sent Adam and Eve out of the Garden of Eden, Eve gave birth to two boys. The older
one was named Cain and the younger one was named Abel. As Cain grew up, he became a
farmer. Abel grew up and became a shepherd, taking care of his sheep and lambs.

Cain would often bring some of the fruit or vegetables that he was growing on his farm and give
it to God as an offering. But when Cain gave his offering, God was not happy with it. God did not
like Cain’s offering.

Why do you think God didn’t like what Cain brought Him?

God did like Abel’s offering, though, because Abel would bring God the best new lambs from his
flock and give them to God. So God was very pleased with Abel’s offering.

Why did God like Abel’s offering of the lamb, but didn’t like Cain’s offering of the fruits and
vegetables?

It’s because Cain only brought God some of what he was growing on his farm. Abel brought
God the best of his animals. Maybe Cain wasn’t giving God the best of his fruits and vegetables.
Maybe he was only giving God the rotten ones. Maybe Cain didn’t really want to give God any
of his things and Abel did want to. Either way, Abel was giving God his best and Cain was not
giving God his best. God always deserves the best from us.

So Cain was angry and jealous that God accepted Abel’s offering but didn’t accept his. And God
said to Cain, “Why are you angry? If you do what is right, I will accept you.”

But Cain wouldn’t listen to God. He didn’t want to do what was right. Instead, he went to his
brother Abel and said, “C’mon, Abel. Let’s go take a walk in my farm field.” And while they were
in the field, Cain attacked his brother Abel and killed him.

Then God said to Cain, “Where is your brother Abel?”

Do you think God really didn’t know where Abel was? (No. God knows everything. He knew
exactly what Cain had done.)

So why do you think God asked Cain where Abel was if He already what had happened?

God was giving Cain the chance to confess and say he was sorry for what he had done. God
knows everything we do, but He wants us to confess it to Him and say we’re sorry.

But Cain replied, “I don’t know. Am I my brother’s keeper?”

Then God said, “What have you done? Listen! Your brother’s blood cries out to me from the
ground. Now you are under a curse and driven from the ground, which opened its mouth to
receive your brother’s blood from your hand. When you work the ground, it will no longer yield
its crops for you. You will be a restless wanderer on the earth.”

What is God making Cain’s punishment to be?

He is making Cain leave the place where he lives and go live somewhere else away from his
family, away from Adam and Eve. And God is making it so that Cain can’t be a farmer anymore.
God says that the ground won’t grow any more food for Cain. He’ll have to go find it instead of
growing it.

Cain said to the Lord, “My punishment is more than I can bear. Today you are driving me from
the land, and I will be hidden from your presence; I will be a restless wanderer on the earth, and
whoever finds me will kill me.”

What is Cain afraid of? (Someone killing him.)

Why would someone want to kill Cain? (Because he killed Abel. Maybe someone wants to
punish Cain for what he did.)

But God said to Cain, “Not so. If anyone kills you, Cain, I will punish that person seven times as
bad as I’m punishing you.” Then God put a mark on Cain (like a tattoo maybe), warning anyone
who found him not to kill him.

So Cain moved away from his home and from Adam and Eve and lived with his wife in the land
of Nod. He built a city there and named it Enoch, after the name of his first son.

Name, we pray ( Amen)
MESSAGE ABOUT JEALOUSY

Job 5:2; "Surely resentment destroys the fool, and jealousy kills the simple." 4.
Proverbs 23:17-18; "Do not let your heart envy sinners, but always be zealous for the
fear of the LORD. There is surely a future hope for you, and your hope will not be cut
off."

Characteristics of Abel and Cain;

Abel -Now Abel was a keeper of sheep

Cain -Cain a tiller of the ground

Here are three ways the Bible shows us to

steer clear of the power of jealousy:

1. Stop comparing

When Peter was discontent with his lot, he looked at John and asked, “Lord,
what about this man?” (John 21:21) Our tendency is the same. Instead of
gratefully accepting all that the Lord gives us, we look around, comparing our
gifts, but Jesus tells Peter, “If it is my will that he remain until I come, what is
that to you? You follow me!” We are responsible to God alone for what He has
entrusted us with. Don’t compare, just follow Him where He is asking you to
go.

2. Celebrate other’s gifts

Instead of seeing God’s good gifts to other people as a threat to what He has
given you, let it encourage you and remind you that our God is good and gives
good gifts to his children (Matthew 7:11). Our God owns everything! When He
graciously provides someone else a good gift, remind yourself that God doesn’t
have any less to give and celebrate His goodness to all of his children!

3. See everything as a gift from God

It’s hard to remember that God is the reason for your paycheck when it has your
name on it. Or, it’s difficult to remind yourself that God provided that meal
when you just picked it up from the grocery store. James writes, “Every good
and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights with
whom there is no variation or shadow due to change”(1:17). Take every
opportunity to see God’s good gifts to you throughout your day and celebrate
His goodness!
1. Put your focus on God’s love for you.
God is love, and He loves you as if you are the only one in the world.
Therefore, He has good thoughts towards you:

“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper
you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” Jeremiah
29:11 NIV

2. Find Your Identity in Christ

There is a beautiful song by Hill Song Worship called Who You Say I Am. In
it, there are several ideas simply presented about who we become through
relationship with Christ. Our sins are forgiven because He died on the cross.
Therefore, we don’t have to carry shame and guilt when we trust Him. “In my
Father’s house, there is a place for me. I’m a child of God, yes I am.” These
words are taken straight from the Bible – that we are “chosen, not forsaken,”
and totally set free by Jesus,
“So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed!” (John 8:36 NIV)
We don’t need to envy others, watch them jealously, thinking they have more
and that they have it better. If you have chosen Christ, or if you make the
decision to do so, “all the promises of God in Him are Yes, and in Him Amen,
to the glory of God through us.” (2 Corinthians 1:20 NKJV)  As a believer, you
become “blessed in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing through
Christ.” (Ephesians 1:3 NIV).

3. Worship Helps You Overcome Envy

ecause we’re blessed with every spiritual blessing, when we have a rising
awareness of that in our hearts, we want to speak praise. In singing, praying,
and adoring God, our remembrance of how much we have rises. Hearts lift up
above earthly conflicts and comparisons. Our love for God as a good, good
Father is emphasized and His constant concern for us is recalled. We have no
time for envy in the glorious atmosphere of worship. Instead, what rises is
thankfulness, hope, and good spirits. Worship contains so many biblical
references in its songs, prayers, and teaching. Those truths drive away the lie
that we are forgotten and must wrestle with one another for a place of value.

4. Know You Are Uniquely Made

There are two verses that so encourage us to think, “there’s a specific place
for me in the world.” I do not have to fear or compete with others in order to
have a place and a purpose. These two verses are:

Psalm 139:13-14 ESV “For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me

together in my mother’s womb. I praise you for I am fearfully and wonderfully
made.” There is no one else like you in the world.
Ephesians 2:10 NLT “For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew
in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long
ago.” That’s a wonderful word, isn’t it? In Christ, we are God’s masterpiece!
And, He planned a specific set of things for us to do long ago. You and I have
a destiny no one else can carry out. It doesn’t matter if it is grand or humble.
God made each of us to be unique, irreplaceable in His grand plan.

5. Gratefulness Drives Envy Away

The Bible says, “A joyful heart is good medicine!” (Proverbs 17:22a ESV) One
of the attitudes that most sets us up for joy and an absence of envy is
gratefulness. When we have gratitude, we look at what we have with
appreciation and stop dwelling on what we don’t have. Consequently, we have
more positive emotions. What we have is treasured. The health of grateful
people is often much better as are their relationships.

Let’s face it. Marketing is a cleverly used tool in this age. Television ads,
online ads, and so on, can stir up our longing for what we don’t have. Looking
at friends, neighbors, and strangers’ posts online can make us feel that
everyone else’s life is a “fairy tale dream of happy vacations and large unified
families.” We know only too well our own struggles. But believe me, those with
lovely Instagram posts have heartache, trials, medical problems, and
rebellious kids too. Remember much is not what it seems on the surface.
Allowing jealous to dominate or rule your life will result to terrible damages.

1. Jealousy Brings Hopelessness and Depression

“Don’t envy sinners, but always continue to fear the Lord. You will be rewarded for
this; your hope will not be disappointed” (Proverbs 23:17-18 NLT).

A Christian should never be envious (jealous) of a sinner. There’s no doubt that the
wealth of the wicked will obviously be transferred into the hands of the righteous.
Sinners may do things that will give them money quickly, but it won’t last. On the other
hand, when the righteous does God’s will, and God blesses him, it will remain. Beloved,
don’t envy (or be jealous of) sinners. Your fasting, prayer, reading of the Bible, doing
good instead of evil, etc., aren’t all in vain. Your hope won’t be disappointed. You surely
have plans, dreams, visions and projects. Nothing shall stop them. They may delay, but
shall not be cut off. Don’t allow jealousy to bring hopelessness and depression into you

life. Jesus in you is your hope of glory.

2. Jealousy Makes You Cruel

“Set me like a seal upon your heart, like a seal upon your arm; for love is as strong as
death; jealousy is as hard and cruel as Sheol (the place of the dead). Its flashes are
flashes of fire, a most vehement flame [the very flame of the Lord]!” [Song of Solomon
8:6 Amplified]. Did you hear that?

Jealousy is as hard as a grave. The simple implication of this is that jealousy will add
hardness to your life. God’s Word teaches that jealousy is the worst of all: “Wrath is
cruel and anger is an overwhelming flood, but who is able to stand before jealousy?”
[Proverbs 27:4 Amplified].

The meaning of this Scripture is that with jealousy in your life you’re in the worst
possible situation you can be in.

3. Jealousy Causes You to Have Limited Power

The limited power comes as a result of the fact that you’ll find yourself always
comparing, because jealousy causes a person to live a life of comparison. The attitude of
comparing yourself with another person is a lack of wisdom, which, in my opinion, is an
indication of lack of understanding.

God’s Word teaches us, however, that “Oh, don’t worry, I wouldn’t dare say that I am
as wonderful as these other men who tell you how good they are! Their trouble is that
they are only comparing themselves with each other and measuring themselves against
their own little ideas. What stupidity” [2 Corinthians 10:12 TLB].

Beloved, jealousy breeds comparison; and every time you compare, you belittle what
God has done, and is doing in your life. An attitude of comparison is a sign that you’re
not being grateful. Jealousy projects the image of selfishness. Let’s therefore avoid
comparison. Learn to be happy with what you have, who you’re; what you’re doing and
where you’re: Instead of comparing, becoming jealous, go close to the person whom you
think is excelling in life and find out his secret. Learn from it and improve your life.

All these point to the fact that, the presence of jealousy in a life is a sign of carnality.

“For you are still only baby Christians, controlled by your own desires, not God’s.
When you are jealous of one another and divide up into quarreling groups, doesn’t
that prove you are still babies, wanting your own way? In fact, you are acting like
people who don’t belong to the Lord at all” [1 Corinthians 3:3 TLB].

The expression “baby Christians” here designates “carnal Christians”; and carnality
means living a flesh or sense-dominated life. By “flesh” I mean a way of thinking that
opposes God’s Word, plan and purpose.

Dear friend, the right way to think is to be happy when somebody gets blessed. Rejoice
when people succeed. Appreciate people for what they have which you don’t have; for
what they’re which you’re not. Such an attitude is likened to sowing a seed which gets
you prepared for others to come and rejoice and celebrate with you also when your own
turn comes, given that we all have our turns.

However, a life controlled by jealousy will stop you from that expectation. If you allow
the devil to bring you down from your exalted position, where you’re seated with Christ
far above any other king or ruler or dictator or leader; to operate in jealousy, it means
you’re doing what ordinary men do.

Ordinary men are men of this world, whose lives are built based on the standard of the
world. Jealousy is a common practice of such men. You’re different, and that’s because
of Jesus who lives in you. As a result of your supernatural relationship with Jesus, you’ve
been translated from an ordinary man to a supernatural being. You’re from above; that’s
what makes you supernatural; and supernatural people aren’t jealous.

4. Jealousy Brings Bitterness

The bitterness which is caused by jealousy is responsible for the rottenness of the bones.
This results to cancer, stress, and premature death. You can’t move around with bitterness
in you without hurting your health. Bitterness is a slow suicide. God’s Word tells us
clearly that “And by all means don’t brag about being wise and good if you are bitter
and jealous and selfish; that is the worst sort of lie. For jealousy and selfishness are
not God’s kind of wisdom. Such things are earthly, unspiritual, inspired by the devil”
[James 3:14-15 TLB].

5. Jealousy Brings Confusion

“For wherever there is jealousy or selfish ambition, there will be disorder and every
other kind of evil” [James 3:16 TLB].

Jealousy is the potential of every evil work, including confusion. All sort of evil and bad
practices come from jealousy. It’s the root of murder, confusion, disorder, uncertainty.
It’s the foundation of every evil thing.
