Program Overview
Program Description
Students have a variety of opportunities to enhance musicianship through ensemble
performance, composition techniques, and music literacy. There are multiple ensembles
available for students to fit their musical needs and allow them to work with peers to create
music from prepared class repertoire and student composed works. Through sight reading,
composition, performance, and music literacy study, students are constantly growing in their
musicianship.

Program Goals
 Students will have the ability to compose and improvise small passages of music with
rhythm and melody by ear and with standard notation.
National Standard MU:Cr1.1.E.8a: Compose and improvise ideas for melodies and rhythmic
passages based on characteristic(s) of music or text(s) studied in rehearsal.
 Students will have the ability to detect how the written aspects of music affect the
performance by reading and comprehending standard notation.
National Standard MU:Pr4.2.E.Ia: Demonstrate, using music reading skills where
appropriate, how compositional devices employed and theoretical and structural aspects
of musical works impact and inform prepared or improvised performances.
 Students will have the ability to present music accurately from a variety of cultures,
styles, and genres with musical expression.
National Standard MU:Pr6.1.E.Ia: Demonstrate attention to technical accuracy and
expressive qualities in prepared and improvised performances of a varied repertoire of
music representing diverse cultures, styles, and genres.
 Students will have the ability to analyze passages of music and respond accordingly and
explain how they chose that response.
National Standard MU:Re7.2.E.Ia: Explain how the analysis of passages and understanding
the way the elements of music are manipulated inform the response to music.

Mission Statement
Our mission is to provide students with the skills to explore and create music of a variety of
cultures, styles, genres, and historical periods. We provide a space for students to explore
their creativity and musical instincts in a positive atmosphere that encourages growth and
development. Students are encouraged to give back to the community through performance
and expressive intent.

Music Education
Music is a language that connects cultures across the world and gives opportunity for
expression unlike any other. All students should be taught the beauty and significance of
music in a way that they can relate to and find joy in.
4

Music Selection
Repertoire for each ensemble is chosen based on the following criteria:
 Music of great quality, for example:
o Opportunities for expression
o Balance of tension and release
o Balance of anticipation and surprise

 Teachable music with vital musical elements, for example:

o Rhythmic duration
o Pitch accuracy
o Dynamic contrasts

 Music appropriate to the context of the ensemble, for example:

o Cultural context
o Text meaning
o Range
o Difficulty
o Complexity

 Concert themes and program goal

Expectations
Classroom Rules
 Conduct yourself with respect for yourself, your peers, your teacher, and other’s property
at all times.

 Be prepared with your music and a pencil at the time that class begins.

 Behavior should uplift peers and yourself, as opposed to distracting from music-making.

Attendance Policy
Students are expected to attend every rehearsal due to their importance to the ensemble.
Participation and attendance are marked and graded each day. Tardies later than 15 minutes
will be marked as an absence. If a student is less than 15 minutes late to rehearsal twice, an
absence is marked.
Students may be excused from rehearsal with a doctor’s note or a signed note from a parent
describing the reason behind the absence.
Students who miss rehearsal for an excused absence will have the opportunity to make up the
points by communicating with peers to update marks in their music and by recording
themselves rehearsing the material covered in class.
All concerts and performance are required for students to attend. Students will drop a letter
grade if they miss a concert. The schedule above allows plenty of time to plan work and
vacations around concert dates. Work is not an excused absence for a performance.
Students will only be excused from a performance or concert for medical emergencies or a
death in the family. Any other absence will be reviewed by the director. Work is not an
excused absence.
Students who miss a performance for an excused absence have the opportunity to make up
the points by watching the concert and writing an evaluative essay and performing selected
passages from the repertoire.

Discipline Policy
Students that do not follow the rules of the school and district in the choir classroom are
subject to disciplinary action.
Students that cause a distraction and are disrespectful to others in class are subject to
disciplinary action.
When a student causes a distraction or breaks a rule, their attendance for the day will be
negatively affected after the first warning. Students will lose 5 points of their daily
participation for each reprimand after that warning. If a student must be removed from the
classroom, their participation points for the day are forfeited.
7

Any student in ISS or OSS will not receive credit for any missed rehearsals and performances.
Students have the opportunity to make up half of those points through a project designated
by the director.
Students with an excessive number of absences may be denied the privilege to perform and
will need to make up performance points through a project designated by the director.
Students with 100% participation for the week will have a choice from three different
“coupons:”
 Free tardy
 Choose where you sit
 You may sit during rehearsal

Concert Etiquette
Students will be required to listen to their peers in other ensembles during concerts. The
following etiquette guide is for students and any other audience members.
 Stay in your seat until the audience is applauding. Getting up during a piece is distracting
to other audience members and performers.

 Talking during a performance is disrespectful and distracting. Refrain from talking during
a performance, and only speak during applause if you absolutely must.

 Cell phones should be turned off during a performance to eliminate distractions from the
music.

 It is a common practice to applaud for the conductor/director when they first walk on
stage for a performance. They will bow to acknowledge the applause and the concert will
begin.

 If a classical piece is divided into smaller movements, applause is not appropriate

between movements. The director will pause but will not lower their hands. It is
appropriate to applaud when the director lowers their hands and acknowledges the
audience.

 A performance requires different etiquette than a sporting game. Cheering, whistling, and
yelling are not appropriate in a classical music concert.
8

Grading Procedures and Achievement

Achievement Expectations
It is expected that every student follow the attendance policy and classroom rules, and a
good grade will easily be attainable.
Students are expected to be prepared for each concert musically, mentally, and physically in
order to represent the school’s choir department.
Students are expected to audition for one solo each semester to show their growth and to
provide a wide range of highlighted voices and timbres in each concert.
Students are expected to participate in at least one fundraiser per semester to help the
department and to offset the cost of being in the program.

Grading Policy
It is not possible to objectively grade a student’s “artistic talent”. Therefore, students are
graded on their musical effort, their willingness to learn and grow as musicians, and their
progress in that growth.
 Rehearsal Participation – 20 points per day, 100 points per week – 30%
o Attendance – Students must be in class and not consistently tardy in order to be able
to earn points.
o Respectful behavior and attitudes
o Being prepared when class starts with music and a pencil
o Discipline – See discipline policy above. Students will lose points for every reprimand
after the first warning.

 Class Work and Discussion – 30%

o Class Discussion – Music Checks – Notebook Reflections
o Recording Assignments – Class Performance – Composition Projects
o Sight Singing - Written Exams

 Concert Attendance – 100 points per concert - 40%

o Students will receive 0 points for missing a concert.
o Students will lose 20 points for a tardy to a concert.
o Students will lose 20 – 40 points for incorrect/unprofessional uniforms at the discretion
of the director.

 Make-up Work
o Students will have the opportunity to regain missed points for rehearsal, and in some
cases, a concert based on the director’s choice of project.
 Recording of student rehearsing what was missed in class for 30 minutes.
 Write a research report on an assigned topic (related to class repertoire).
 Perform concert selections for the director.
o Make-up work must be completed one week after the missed rehearsal.

Uniform Rental and Purchase

Non-Auditioned Choirs
Members of the non-auditioned treble choir and the non-auditioned tenor-bass choir are
expected to own all aspects of the uniform that are worn under the robe. These items are
most often already owned but can be obtained on a budget from many different stores and
thrift shops.
Choir robes are kept in the choir room and not available for purchase. The robes are kept well
maintained with a yearly $10 uniform fee for students in the non-auditioned choirs.

Auditioned Choirs
Trebles
Treble singers have the choice between the black formal dress specific to the ensemble and a
black pantsuit with a blouse specific to the ensemble. Pantsuits are not available to rent and
must be purchased if the student chooses that option. Trebles are expected to own black flats
or heels.
If the student chooses to wear the black formal dress for their ensemble, they may rent it
from the choir department for a yearly $20 rental fee. If the student would like to purchase a
new dress, they may do so for $105 to the department, and the dress will be ordered.

Tenors and Basses

Tenors and basses are expected to own their shoes, socks, shirts, and ties. If the student’s
uniform is a black suit, they may either rent one from the department or purchase their own.
Suits do not need to be a specific brand, but the jacket must have two buttons.
Students may rent a black suit or black tuxedo from the choir department for a yearly $20
rental fee. If the student would like to purchase a new tuxedo, they may do so for $105 to the
choir department, and the tuxedo will be ordered.

Uniform Return
If a student fails to return their uniform, no matter lost or stolen, a replacement fee will be
posted to the student's account. ($105 for all uniforms except suits, which are $65)
If the uniform is not returned by one week from the return date, the student will be charged
a replacement fee.
If the uniform is stained or damaged but is repairable, the student will be charged for the
cost of repairs. If the uniform is damaged beyond repair, the student will be charged a
replacement fee.
Any alterations must be removed upon return except hems.
Lost or stolen uniforms are still the students’ responsibility. Never leave your uniform in an
unlocked area where it can be easily taken. To prevent losing your uniform, you may write
your name on masking tape and tape it onto the tag of the uniform.
11

Private Lessons
Students that are interested in taking private voice lessons may contact the following vocal
pedagogues in our area.
There are more people in our area that offer private lessons, but the Booster Club will pay
half of the cost of each voice lesson with these teachers. The other half is payed by the
student.
For the 2020-2021 school year, one half an hour lesson is $30.00.

Choir Awards
Varsity Letter
Students are given the opportunity to earn a letter in the choir program. Lettering in choir
recognizes co-curricular service and musical achievement that aids personal growth and the
entire choir department.
Points earned through co-curricular choral activities will accumulate until enough points are
earned to letter, after which the student will begin again at zero and may work to earn
another letter with the same requirements. Students are responsible for keeping any
programs or other proof of concert attendance to be turned in at the end of the year.
In order to letter each year, students must complete the following:
 Complete successful participation for a minimum of one year in choir.
 Not have any unexcused absences in choir for the school year.
 Not leave choir for disciplinary reasons for the school year.
 Have not been assigned any in-school or out-of-school suspension for the school year.
 Earn a minimum of 20 lettering points. Points may accumulate over multiple years if the
student does not earn a letter but will reset at 0 the year after the student letters.
For the letter point form, see the forms section at the end of the handbook.

Choir Banquet
At the end of each school year, a banquet is given to celebrate the year of music making and
to award students who have gone above and beyond for the choir department and their
musicianship.
 National School Choral Award
The National School Choral Award® is the highest honor for high school choral performers. It
recognizes the dedication and musical achievement of top choral students nationwide. The
award is given to a student that has shown these qualities for four years in the choral
department.
 Outstanding Leadership Award
The Outstanding Leadership Award is presented to a student who has demonstrated their
propensity for leading in rehearsal, performances, and co-curricular activities.
 Letter Awards
Students who have lettered over the course of the year will be presented with their letter and
pin. Students who have lettered before will be presented with a bar pin.
 Solo and Ensemble Festival
Students that participated in Solo and Ensemble Festival will be presented with their
certificates ad medals if applicable.

 Respect must be shown to all people within the group and all people with whom the group
comes in contact.
 Students must participate in all scheduled activities.
 Students must remain with the group at all times unless permission is given by the
teacher, in which case a “buddy system” will be employed.
 Students must follow all rules and policies even if they are over the age of 18.
 Students that do not adhere to this policy are subject to be sent home at their parents’
expense.

Drugs and Alcohol Policy

Students found to have consumed any amount, in possession or control of selling or delivering
any controlled substance (alcohol, drugs, drug paraphernalia, intoxicating substances, look-
alikes, or marijuana) while on or off school property during any school sponsored activity shall
be subject to disciplinary action.
 Students will not consume, sell, or deliver any controlled substances, on or off campus.
 Students will be sent home at the parents’ expense.
 Students will be reported to school administration and police for further action.

Representing the Department

As a choir member, it is your job to maintain our department’s outstanding reputation. At any
event, each decision you make represents the choir department, the school, and the district.
This includes physical actions, body language, and how we speak to others. Always be sure to
conduct yourself responsibly and with respect to people and property.
15

Fundraising
Maintaining an active program costs money! However, there are a variety of opportunities for
fundraising that, if participated in, can cover all required fees for choir. Some fundraisers are
mandatory, and some are optional. Keep in mind that if a student chooses not to participate
in optional fundraisers, their choir fees will need to be paid out of pocket.

Student Account
Every student enrolled in choir has a choir account added to their school account. This
account is where fees are placed for uniform rental or purchase, choir T-shirt, co-curricular
auditions, festivals, and travel.
When a student fundraises for their individual costs, funds are added to the student account
and act towards existing and future fees.
When a student participates in a department fundraiser, it will lower the cost of fees for each
student based on earnings.

Required Fundraisers
The fall and spring carwashes are required fundraisers for all students. Each student must
work a 2 hour shift at the carwash to raise funds for the department. This will lower fees for
all students!
The winter CD is a required fundraiser for all students. Every student will participate with
their ensemble in recording, and each student must sell 5 CDs for $5 each, or do a $25
buyout.
Burgers and Broadway is required for all students. Students may audition to perform, donate
food materials, or work with organization. All students must attend Burgers and Broadway.

Optional Fundraisers
There is a fall and spring chocolate bar fundraiser every year, with students gaining 40% of
credit for each $0.50 chocolate bar sold.
The advertisement fundraiser at the beginning of the year sells advertisements for the
concert and musical programs. Students will earn 20% of the ads they sell for their student
account.
The plant fundraiser in the spring gives students 40% of the plants that they sell in their
account.
16

Maintaining and Preserving Vocal Health

Hydration
It is vital that your vocal cords stay hydrated in order to maintain vocal health.
 Drink plenty of water for internal hydration
 Consider using a room humidifier during winter months for external hydration
 Cough drops that contain menthol and/or eucalyptus dry out the throat’s mucous
membrane. Halls Breezers is a good brand to use without drying the throat.

Misuse and Overuse

It is important to not misuse or overuse your voice or it may become damaged over time.
 Avoid yelling and screaming
 Be careful not develop a habit of constantly clearing the throat.
 Avoid talking loudly for extended periods of time, this can easily happen in noisy
situations like social gatherings and at restaurants.
 Avoid whispering as much as possible
 Always warm up before singing to provide elasticity to the vocal cords.

Preservation
These tips will help keep your voice healthy throughout the year and your whole life!
 Warm up before singing; cool down after singing
 Use speaking voice in a healthy way by using proper technique even while speaking
 Know vocal limits and stay within them (pitch, loudness, and endurance)
 Rest the voice before and after a big singing day
 Plan vocal use and pace the voice, especially during times of increased vocal demands
 Stop singing before getting tired. Feeling tired can indicate damage
If you feel that you may be harming your voice inadvertently, see the director to discuss your
concerns.
