For at least 3 out of the 5 categories below, provide a description (at least 3-5 sentences) including the month, the repertoire, and the connections
you will provide to the curriculum.
Science: October: Rocky Mountain; Bluebird; Cedar Swamp; We’re Zooming into Space; Bear Dance. There are many options for incorporating
science into this month based on the repertoire for the unit. The class could learn and study ecosystems/environments with songs such as Rocky
Mountain and Cedar Swamp. The students could study specific animals, such as birds or bears, or it could extend to birds and mammals for a
more broad approach. With the song about Space, students could spend time learning about various aspects of outer space! These could be
changed depending on what science classes are working on at this time.
Social studies: May: Didn’t My Lord Deliver Daniel; Wayfaring Stranger; The Battle on Shiloh’s Hill; Away, Rio; Come by Here. These songs
all provide important historical aspects from America, and other parts of the world. The culture of folk songs from hundreds of years ago that still
last today are worth knowing. Two spirituals can bring up age-appropriate discussion of America’s history with slavery. The other pieces can be a
discussion on cultures of the time, and students will likely take an interest in the sea shanty Away, Rio, providing an opportunity to learn about
sailors in the past.
Health/P.E.: September: I Have a Little Dreidel; Come Life, Shaker Life; Community Ring Dance; Frosty Weather; Irish Trot; Old Joe Clark;
Slavonic Dances. Using these pieces and the concepts of Body Shapes and Directions, students will work on becoming familiar and comfortable

with their body and the space around it. By utilizing movement in the classroom, students will become familiar with healthy movements that make
them feel good physically and mentally. They will be encouraged to continue moving in creative ways outside of music class and may want to
share what they’ve learned to their P.E. teacher and family members.
