Fast facts: Inline Dialysis for Professional IC
instruments

01 Basics:
Complex matrices, such as waste water, emulsions, soil
Benefits of the Inline Dialysis:
• protects column from large molecules, oily
eluates, dairy products and others will quickly foul or clog phases, proteins and particles
the column if injected directly. With the patented inline • no time-consuming manual sample preparation
«stopped flow dialysis» undesired matrix components necessary and no contamination by the
from a variety of demanding sample types can be elimi- operator
nated automatically. • low maintenance (sporadic replacement of
dialysis membrane after 40-400 samples)
Working principle: • combination with automated Inline Dilution
For simple inspection the dialysis cell consists of two possible
transparent parts that are screwed together and hold a • low cost of ownership
membrane between them. One two-channel peristaltic
pump is used to transport the sample and a second two-
channel peristaltic pump is used for the acceptor solu-
tion. The patented stopped flow status during the actual
dialysis is achieved by stopping the pump on the accep-
tor side for a defined dialysis time, while the sample is
continuously transported along the other side of the
membrane. Therefore, the sample concentration on the
sample side of the membrane remains constant. The in
active two-channel peristaltic pump ensures that both
inlet and outlet of the acceptor side are blocked during
that time. Due to the osmotic effect the concentration of
all substances that can pass through the membrane is
identical on both sides after typically 8-14 minutes. Then
the pump on the acceptor side is started to transfer the
dialysate to the injection valve of the IC system. Inline
Dialysis of the next sample can take place during the
chromatographic run of the current sample, providing
time efficient sample prepraration.

the sample itself is used to purge the membrane and

Filtration requires an actual flow through the filter
membrane, which is prevented by the fact that both inlet
and outlet of the acceptor side are blocked during the
dialysis.
