WITH MATTEO STORCHI, COMER INDUSTRIES

KEEPING IT IN THE FAMILY

Matteo Storchi becomes second generation of Comer founders
to lead Italian powertrain specialist

Editor’s Note: In April 2017, Comer Industries elected its

new board of directors, and Matteo Storchi was appointed
chief executive officer. He represents the second genera-
tion of the Storchi family, which founded the company. Die-
sel Progress International recently spoke with Storchi after
his first few months at the helm.

DPI: As the new CEO of Comer Industries, what does

it mean to take the reins of your family’s company and
follow in the steps of the generation that founded the
enterprise?
Storchi: It is for sure a big responsibility, both from the
professional point of view and in relation to all the people
that compose and surround our company; not just our em-
ployees, but also our partners, customers and suppliers.
On the other hand, I am very proud to have had this
chance and I believe with our team effort we can reach the
targets we have set and be a reference point for the mar-
kets we are active in.

DPI: One of your first official statements mentioned

“an increase in dimensions and financial returns in the
next five years.” Can you explain how this will unfold?
Storchi: The dimension of the off-highway market we are
able to serve with our products is huge and gives us lots of
opportunity to grow.
Our plan is composed of two major parts. One is based
on organic growth, sustained by extending our market Matteo Storchi is the new CEO of Comer Industries. The Storchi

fall. In addition, the Brazilian currency
appreciated again, contributing to the
reduction of producers’ margins.
The sugar and ethanol sector, which
took advantage of the good market
momentum last year, also suffered
from the drop in sugar prices due to
the increase in production in the main
producing countries. Thus, of the main
crops produced in the country, only
cotton and oranges have maintained
high prices and good profitability.
Since 2014, the agricultural machin-
ery sector has suffered a significant
drop in sales. The financial situation
of the agricultural companies, high
interest rates and the credit restric-
tion brought on by the economic cri-
sis caused farmers to reduce their
investment in machinery.
At the end of 2016, with the high
prices of the main agricultural com-
modities, the machinery sector began
to recover. Good sales at the end of
2016 led the industry to end the year
with a number close to the previous
year. This situation lasted until May,
when sales were above year-ago
levels. In June, there was a drop in
monthly sales that has continued.
Despite that, 2017 sales should be
similar to last year.
The reduction in the number of ma-
chines sold was caused by the situ-
ation in the commodities market. On
the financial side, interest rate de-
clines have been significant, falling
from 14.25% in 2016 to roughly 7%
this year. As interest rates on credit for
machine purchases are still at higher
levels, producers may be waiting to
reduce interest to buy machinery.
Good yields helped to keep mar-

Engine manufacturer launches new application for engine data access

BY IAN CAMERON

A
new mobile application, designed to give Chinese
customers quick access to the latest information
about their Perkins engines and connect them for
service and support to their local Perkins distribu-
tor, has been announced by the company.
Perkins’ My Engine app, published in Mandarin, will be
available to download in China before the end of the year,
the company said.
The free smartphone app will allow Chinese end users
to register their Perkins engines and access their operating
maintenance manual (OMM) and parts book.
Perkins said the app also enables the user to keep a
service record and contact their local Perkins distributor
through the Distributor Locator feature.
According to the U.K.-headquartered company, the app
is suitable for all owners and operators of Perkins-powered
machines, as it provides easy access to engine specific in-
formation including build list, series, type, model, Perkins
Platinum Protection indicator, parts book, OMM, a consum-
able list, forthcoming services and a completed service log.
“This new initiative, which is free to all owners of Perkins-
powered equipment, will enhance the service and support
our customers already receive from our network of trained
Perkins distributors,” said Michael Wright, Perkins general
manager – Aftermarket.
“We have a large population of Perkins engines hard at
work in a variety of applications across China. We want to
help our customers keep their engines running at their op-
timum performance, so this app will enable the owners of
these machines to quickly access important information on
their engine, via their smartphone.
“End users will also receive service reminders and other
handy alerts, all of which are designed to help our custom-
ers easily maintain the performance and productivity of
their Perkins engine.”
The English version was launched in Europe and North
America earlier this year. dpi

Say Hello To NPP …

This is gonna be fun! Diesel Progress is very excited to announce our new electronic
and print publishing program, NewPowerProgress — NPP.
Simply put, if it powers on-highway, off-highway, stationary or marine equipment,
we’ll cover it. Diesel, gasoline, natural gas and all types of alternative fuels in Diesel
Progress. Electrification, hybrids, e-components and things like charging systems in NPP.
It’s really just the next step in an 82-year continuum. When Diesel Progress was
founded in 1935, it was conceived as a emerging technology magazine (really!) to
promote the exciting new possibilities for diesel engines.
So we have always covered the newest and latest developments in engine and
powertrain technologies. NPP continues that legacy.
The stated mission of NPP is “coverage of electrification, hybrids and new powertrain
technologies for the global vehicle and equipment markets.”
Our ad folks got the whole concept into six words:

Delivering tomorrow’s technologies to today’s OEMs.

There are four parts to NewPowerProgress.
1. There is a website: www.newpowerprogress.com
2. The NewPowerProgress bi-monthly e-newsletter debuts the week of October 8th.
3. There will be inaugural print editions of NPP in October Diesel Progress
North American and November-December Diesel Progress International.
In 2018, there will be 8 print editions of NPP: four in Diesel Progress
North American and four in Diesel Progress International.
4. As usual, we’ll be all over social media.
• On Twitter at @NPProgress
• A LinkedIn Group NewPowerProgress
• And on Facebook @NewPowerProgress
• A YouTube channel will follow.

In an effort to highlight its electrification capabilities, Cummins developed a Class 7 tractor demonstrator with
an all-electric powertrain. The Aeos tractor uses lithium-ion batteries to drive an electric traction motor that
offers a peak output of 350 kW/469 hp — 225 kW/301 hp continuous — making it able to match the hauling
characteristics of a vehicle with an 11 or 12 L diesel, the company said.

SKYJACK OPTIMISTIC
ABOUT SOUTH

BY MAURO BELO SCHNEIDER

S
kyjack, the Canada-based manufacturer of aerial
lift equipment and telehandlers, has launched
new products in Brazil. The company has said
it is optimistic about its performance in South
America in 2018.
“As a major influence in the South American region, this
recovery will have a positive impact on all neighboring mar-
kets, especially Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, Colombia and
Peru,” said Rafael Bazzarella, Latin America sales man-
ager, Skyjack.
“2017 started slow as there was still quite a bit of concern
regarding the political instability in Brazil caused by major
corruption scandals. As the year progressed we saw a slight
increase in the construction and industrial markets, caus-
ing AWP (aerial work platform) utilization for the smaller dc
units to increase, followed by again a marginal increase in
rental rates. This increase has created a backlog in some
regions and, with it, optimism for improvement. While too
early to determine if it’s momentary or a trend, these are the
first signs we look at to determine if the market is improv-
ing. If this trend continues we can expect a recovery sooner
rather than later.”
Skyjack introduced the SJIII4740 electric scissor lift, a
unit that has been in demand because warehouses are get-
ting taller thanks to its 13.8 m work height and smaller foot-
print than conventional articulated machines.
