HOW TO PREPARE FOR THE EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION ASSESSMENT (ECA)

• Read the section on the ECA on the syllabus!

• Review the rubric so that you know what our expectations are and how you can meet (and even
exceed) them!

• Maximize your production of spoken Spanish in class every day, and listen for corrections the
instructor may offer to you and/or your classmates.

• Instead of giving a response with one or two words, respond in whole sentences! Go beyond the
specifics of any given class activity to be creative!

• Get together with classmates to practice spoken Spanish outside of class.

• Attend the Mesa de Español (Spanish conversation practice group that meets weekly) to practice
informally with other students. Ask your instructor about details.

• Review the materials for the chapters so far, including the textbook, Extra Practice exercises in
Connect, and LearnSmart in Self Study mode to make sure you feel confident that you have met the
learning objectives for Capítulos 7-8:

• After Chapter 7, I will be able to:

 describe events in the past, including the ways in which my family, friends, and I
celebrated holidays and life events
• What are some of my most important memories? How did I celebrate holidays,
birthdays, and other important events in my life in the past?
 offer congratulations, well wishes, and condolences according to the specific situation
in which I find myself
 identify and compare in my own and other cultures how people celebrate holidays and
life events (e.g., coming of age, marriage, births, deaths) and the values expressed by
the way people celebrate those holidays and events
• Why are celebrations important? How do they bring people together? How do
they reflect traditions? How do they keep memories alive?

• After Chapter 8, I will be able to:

 identify parts of the body and what the ideal body type is in my own and other cultures
 describe what I and other people wear / wore, including how the clothing fit / fitted,
what color the clothing is / was, and in what contexts the clothing is / was worn
• What is my style? How is my current way of dressing different from that in the
past? What are some clothing items that I used to wear before?
 describe and narrate in the past
 compare and contrast my own with other cultures related to what, where, when, how,
and why people wear what they do
• What do people in my country/state/region and other countries or regions
produce, wear, and/or sell?
