Computing Daily Feed Ration

Competency: LO 1. Feeds and Feeding (TLE_AFFN9-12FF-lla-j-1)

1.2 Compute Feed Daily Ration
.
Objectives: At the end of the lesson, the learners are expected to:
a. Identify the factors in computing feed ration;
b. Calculate daily feed ration; and
c. Appreciate the importance of computing daily feed ration in fish feeding operations through
case analysis.

Key Concepts

Computing Daily Feed Ration

The daily feed allowance is calculated with this formula:

Daily feed ration = W x N x S x R

Where: W (g) = average body weight of the stock after a given period
N = original number of stock
S (%) = estimated survival rate during a given period
R (%) = Feeding rate
Example:
Given:
No. of stock in 1 hectare pond = 50,000
Weight after 30 days = 60 g
Estimated survival = 90 %
Feeding rate =5 %
Daily feed ration (DFR)
= 60 g x 50,000 x 0.90 x 0.05 / day / 1000 g/kg
= 135,000 / 1000
= 135 kgs

Total feed requirement

= 135 kgs / day x 15
= 2,025 kg for 15 days

Note: To get the average individual weight of fish, perform/do sampling by weighing the stock individually
or in bulk divided by the number of fish sampled.

Feeding rates
Feeding rate is the basis for determining the amount of feed to be given to the fish and usually expressed in
percentage fish biomass.

Recommended Feeding Rates:

Fry 50 – 20%
05 – 5 g 20 – 10%
5 – 50 g 10 – 7%
50 – 500 g 7 – 5%
500 g and above 5 – 3%

Feeding rate is lowered as the fish grow bigger because of lower metabolic rate.

Activity 1. Identification
Directions: Identify the meaning of the following factors to consider in computing daily feed ration for fish

1. W
2. N
3. S
4. R
5. DFR

Activity 2. Computation
Directions: Calculate and show your solution in each of the given situation. (5 points)

1. Calculate the daily feed ration, feed amount per feeding and total feed requirement for the next 15
days of milkfish if:

Total initial stock - 5,000

Estimated survival rate - 85%
ABW - 205
Feed rate - 3%
8AM - 25%
11AM - 30%
4PM - 45%

2. Catfish in tank was fed for 20 days with feeding ration of 18 kilos per day. Initially, average weight is
23 grams and biomass is 342 kilos. On the 20 th day the average weight becomes 61 grams and
biomass 734 kilos. What is the FCR after 20 days?

Activity 3. Analysis
Directions: Read and analyze the given situation. In a form of one (1) paragraph, write your analysis by
answering all the guide questions that follow. (10 points)

Situation: Aquaculture is one of the major sources of livelihood in La Caldera. Alex decided to engage into
shrimp farming as it is one of the most successful ventures in the town. With the hope of a
profitable undertaking, he feeds his stock shrimps as he wishes with the thought of feeding fish
more and more often will make his business more profitable.
Guide questions:
1. In the given situation, what should have been done by Alex?
2. What would it be like if this feeding practice is repeatedly done?
3. What is the importance computing daily feed ration?
