Solution to Pond Assignments

Problem 1

Calculate and plot the elevation-storage curve for the given elevation-area data.

Solution:

Vi = elevation*(Ai + Ai+1)/2

Elevation Area Avg. Area Elevation Volume Storage

(ft) (acres) (acres) (ft) (acre-ft) (acre-ft)
1592 0 0
1595 0.8 0.4 3 1.2 1.2
1600 3.2 2 5 10 11.2
1605 4.8 4 5 20 31.2
1607 6.5 5.65 2 11.3 42.5
1608 8.9 7.7 1 7.7 50.2
1610 12 10.45 2 20.9 71.1

Problem 2

Given: Principal spillway elevation = 1600 ft

Emergency spillway elevation = 1608 ft

(a) The upper boundary of this volume is the water level at the principal spillway elevation (1600 ft).

Deposition and Active Storage Volume = 11.2 acre-ft

(b) The upper boundary of this volume is the water level at the emergency spillway elevation and the lower boundary is at the principal spillway elevation.

Flood storage volume = 50.2 - 11.2

Flood Storage Volume = 39 acre-ft

Problem 3

Cw = weir coefficient = 3.0, Co = orifice coefficient = 0.6

L = 120 ft, Ke = 1.0 Kb = 0.5, n = 0.025

Kc = 5087/n 2/(Db4/3) = 0.046

Lw = pi (Dr)

H* = 12 - 0.6(2) = 10.8

Calculate the equations for each type of flow (weir, orifice, and pipe).

Weir flow

Qw = CwLwH3/2 = (3)(7.07)H 3/2

Qw = 21.20 H 3/2

Orifice flow

Qo = CoAr (2gH)1/2 = 0.6(piD 2/4)(2(32.2)) 1/2H1/2

Qo = 19.12 H 1/2

Pipe flow

Qp = 3.14 SQRT[2(32.2)]* (10.8 + H) 1/2/(1 + 0.5 + 5.52 + 1)

Problem 6

Given: Basin dimensions: 50 ft long x 130 ft long x 4 ft deep

Dead space = 15%, Q = 4 cfs

wc = Q/[As(1-fd)] = 4 cfs / [(130 x 50)ft 2 (1-.15)] = 7.24 x 10 -4 ft/s

dc = (wc/2.81) 1/2 = (7.24 x 10 -4/2.81)/12 = 0.016 mm

From chart provided:

FFc#1 @ d c = 0.016 = 0.47, FF c#2 @ d c = 0.016 = 0.24

FFc#1 = 1-FF c = 1-0.47 = .53
