LESSON PLAN 6

Electrical Installation and Maintenance

I. OBJECTIVES
At the end of the period, 80% of the students would be able to;
a. Identify the ampacities of different wire sizes as a basis on what ratings
of circuit breaker should be installed in a circuit.
b. Install a Circuit Breaker following the procedure according to
standards.
c. Show interest to learn more about electrical protection systems.
II. SUBJECT MATTER
Topic: Breaker Panel
Learning Outcomes 1: Layout and Install Panel Board
References: Installing Electrical Protection (pages 48-60)
Materials: Laptop and Projector for PowerPoint Presentation
III. PROCEDURE

A. Routinary Matter
 Prayer
Let us stand for the prayer……
 Greetings
Good Morning Class!
 Attendance
The teacher will call the students one by one and the students
will respond by saying “PRESENT”.
B. Review
 What was your previous topic?
C. Motivation
Present the title of the topic in scrambled form and let your students
arrange and identify it.
RRKEEBA NLPAE - BREAKER PANEL
D. Activity
 The class will be divided into four, they will be tasked to name the parts
of breaker panel, they will be given three minutes to do the activity.
E. Analysis
 Let the groups share their work, check their answers and provide the
correct answers, then ask the students about the following questions;
o Are there any illustrations that help you to name the parts? (the
students will respond “Yes”) Give at least two examples.
o How did you find the activity?
F. Abstraction
Show on the PowerPoint Presentation the Following:
“BREAKER PANEL”

Objectives:
a. Identify the ampacities of different wire sizes as a basis on what
ratings of circuit breaker should be installed in a circuit.
b. Install a Circuit Breaker following the procedure according to
standards.
c. Show interest to learn more about electrical protection systems.

Breaker Panel

Breaker Panel is a load central protection, where group of circuit breakers

are installed inside a panel board, and all of the loads in a certain house or
building are connected to it.
Important Ratings when Choosing Replacement Circuit Breakers:
1. Rated Voltage, Rated Normal Current – These refers to the normal
operating conditions of the circuit breaker.
2. Rated Breaking Capacity – it is expressed in Maximum Voltage
Ampere (MVA), it describes the circuit breakers interrupting current.
3. Rated Frequency – The frequency of electrical system in which the
circuit breaker is to be connected.
4. Rated Short Time Current – Effective Value of current in which the
circuit breaker must carry for a stated time.
Wire Sizes Ampacities as a Basis when
Choosing Replacement Breakers
Sizes of Wire Ampacities
No. 14 15 amps
No. 12 20 amps
No. 10 30 amps
No. 8 40 amps
No. 6 55 amps
Parts of Breaker Panel

Types of Breaker Panel Enclosure

1. Flush Mount (NEMA 1)

2. Surface Mount (NEMA 1)

3. Exterior Surface (NEMA 3R)

Breaker Panel Accessories and their Uses

1. LUG – it is used for termination of

conductors.

2. GROUNDED/NEUTRAL BAR -
It is used for termination of
grounded conductors.
3. FLUSH LOCKS – It is used for locking of cabinet doors.

4. PADLOCK ATTACHMENT – is used

to lock breakers in the off or on
position.

5. CLOSURE PLATE – it is used to fill

empty breaker spaces where breakouts
have been removed.

6. LOCK OFF – it is used to lock

the breakers in “off” position
for equipment servicing.

7. HANDLE TIE – it is used to mechanically

tie two or more breakers handles together
to assure common tripping.

8. CONDUIT HUBS – It is used to

allow entrance of conduits to rain
proof enclosures.
Procedures on How to install a Panel Board
(Present a video to the class)

G. Application
Instruction:
A five-member group activity, given the materials needed, the students will
be task to install a circuit breaker to a certain electrical connection. Each
group will be given four minutes to do the activity.
H. Generalization
Ask these following questions:
1. What is a Breaker Panel?
2. What are the Load Center Accessories?
IV. EVALUATION
MATCHING-TYPE
Instruction:
Match the items in column A with the options in column B, write the letter of
your choice on the space provided.
Column A Column B
1. Wire No. 14 A. 15 amp
2. Wire No. 10 B. 55 amp
3. Wire No. 6 C. 30 amp
4. Wire No. 12 D. 20 amp
5. Wire No. 8 E. 70 amp
F. 40 amp

V. ASSIGNMENT
Instruction:
In a ½ sheet of paper, draw a wiring diagram with circuit breakers on it, TV,
Lightings, Oven, Refrigeration, and Washing Machine are the loads that must
be present to the circuit.
