Quarter 1 – Applying Suitable Wiring Method for the Job
Module 7: Prepare Materials for Different Types of Wiring Methods.

I. Introduction:
This module contains the different type of wiring methods under the
competency applying suitable wiring methods.

It covers the development of learner’s knowledge, skills and attitude in

wiring methods before starting work.

Before attempting to perform the actual exercises, see to it that you have
already read and understood every learning activities and answered
correctly the practice task provided after learning activities.

 Identify materials used in different wiring methods.
 Describe types of wiring methods.
 Prepare materials for different types of wiring methods.

III. Vocabulary List

This vocabulary words help the learner to understand un familiar technical terms.

Different Types of Electrical Wiring System

Cleats Wiring
The open or exposed wiring method is sometimes referred to as the
Open Wiring on Insulators. Cleat wiring temporary wiring in a building or
construction is necessary to enable lighting and power to be provided for the
various points of the site. The cleat wiring on insulator shall be installed in
accordance to regulation the system made by porcelain, plastic or hard
wood.
The cheat has two parts one is the

Cap
Base

Figure 1. Cleat Insulator

The cables shall be supported on base because in base the grooves are
made and cables are easily fitted in these grooves. After that the base is
covered with cap and then cap is screwed on the base. The cleats are
available in two-way, three-way and four-way construction. The two-way
cleat is used for single-phase supply (230V) and three-way cleat is used for
three-phase (440V) three wire system and four-way cleat is used for three-
phase four wire system. This wiring is installed in vertical and horizontal
positions. In this wiring system the fault is replaced very easily because all
the cables are open. Source: http://electricaltopics.blogspot.com/2014/05/cleat-wiring-system.html?m=1

Wooden Casing and Capping

The cable use in this VIR or PVC or any other approved insulated cables.
The casing consists of V-shaped grooves (usually two to hold the cables of
opposite polarity in different grooves.) and its covered at the top by means of
rectangular strip of wood, known as capping of same width as that of casing.

PVC Casing and Capping

The standard length of case and cap is 1 meter and are available in size of
1.5 inches width and0.8 inch in thickness. The durability of this wiring
system is 20 years approximately. Mostly used in office and home.

Conduit Wiring
Source: http://electricaltopics.blogspot.com/2015/04/casing-and-capping-wiring.html?=m=1
Figure wires
Conduit wiring is basically 5. PVC casing and capping
or cables which are routed in metal or
plastic pipe inside the wall. This is because electrical current flow through
the wires and it should be protected from external damage like rodent, fire
and short circuit.
There are five common types of conduit used commonly in residential and
light commercial wiring:
Rigid metal conduit, or RMC

is heavy-duty
galvanized steel
tubing that is
installed with
threaded fittings and
treaded both ends. It
is typically used
outdoors to provide
protection from
damage and can also
provide structural support for electrical cables, panels and other
equipment. RMC is sold in 10- and 20-foot lengths and has
threads on both ends.

Electrical Metallic Tubing-EMT

Another example of a rigid

electrical conduit is EMT
(electrical metal tubing), which is
most commonly made of
galvanized steel but can also be
aluminum. EMT is also called
“thin-wall” conduit because it is
thin and lightweight, especially
compared to RMC. EMT is rigid
but can be bent with a simple tool called a conduit bender.

Electrical Non-Metallic Tubing-ENT

Electrical non-metallic tubing (ENT) is flexible corrugated plastic

tubing that is moisture-resistant and flame-retardant. It is easy
to band and installs with snap-lock or glued plastic fittings.
Unlike EMT, non-metallic tubing cannot install in exposed
locations, so it is commonly used inside walls. In addition
To installation in standard
wood-or metal-frame walls,
ENT can be installed inside
concrete block structures
and can be covered with
concrete. Due to the blue
color of one common brand of this conduit, ENT is nicknamed
“smurf tube”, after the Smurfs cartoon characters.

Flexible Metal Conduit-FMC and LFMC

Flexible metal conduit (FMC) is also called “Greenfield”, after the

name of its inventor. It has a spiral construction that makes it
flexible so it can snake through walls and other structures.
Standard FMC is used in dry indoor locations, often for short
runs between a wall box and a motor or fixed appliance, such as
a garbage disposer.
Liquid-tight flexible metal conduit (LFMC) is a special type of
flexible metal conduit that has a plastic coating and is used with
sealed fittings to make it watertight. It is commonly used with
outdoor equipment, such as air conditioner units.

Rigid PVC Conduit

Rigid polyvinyl chloride

(PVC) is similar to plastic
plumbing pipe and is
installed with plastic
fittings that are glued in
place. It can be bent after
being heated in a portable
heater box. Because the
conduit tubing and fittings are glued together, the conduit
assemblies can be watertight, making PVC suitable for direct
burial in the ground for many applications. It is allowed in
corrosive environments.
Split knob and tube
In the open or exposed wiring method, the wires are visible and are
supported by the knobs. These knobs may be a split or solid type. This is
shown in figure 1.
Source: https://www.r-infinity.com/Standard_Porcelain_insulators/MainPage.htm

Figure 1. The Split and Solid knobs

Split knobs are used to support wires smaller than No. 8. Solid knobs are
used to support or anchor wires as big as No. 8 or even bigger. Screws or
nails may be used to fasten the knobs. When a nail is used a leather washer
should be placed between the nail head and the insulator to form cushion
and protect the insulator from breaking. See figure 2.

Height of Knob

Figure 2. The Solid Knob with Leather washer for Protection

Figure 3. Shows the correct and wrong ways of tying wires to the
groove of a solid knob.

In installing an electrical wiring system with the exposed knob and

tube wiring method, the distance between conductors should be maintained
at a minimum distance of 6 cm. (2 ½ inches) apart. The knobs must have a
30 cm (1 foot) distance apart. Figure 4 illustrates this provision of PEC.

30 cm. 1
Ft.

Figure 4. Spacing of Split Knobs and Conductors

Whenever wires pass through studs, rafters, floor joists or any wooden
part of a building, the wires are inserted in porcelain tubes or flexible mica
tubing. Porcelain tubes and mica tubing are also provided whenever wires
cross each other. It gives the wire extra protection from injury.
