requirement. TLE_IAE10WD-IIIa-IVj-2

LEARNING a. Discuss technical drawings

OBJECTIVES b. Identify symbols of wiring devices in an electrical plan

IMPORTANT: Do not write anything on this material. Write your answers on the learner’s activity and
assessment sheets provided separately.

UNDERSTAND
ELECTRICAL TECHNICAL DRAWINGS

Technical drawings, electrical plans and electrical diagrams mean the same thing. These diagrams are
very important in working with the electricity. In the workplace it is used to communicate among workers.
When job order is given from the workers (supervisor), the job is written and communicates through
diagrams. All electrical driven machines in industry contain electrical diagrams in the Manual hence,
trouble shooting is made easy when the diagram is reviewed. In other words technical drawings or
electrical diagrams serve as a guide while the electrician are performing their duties.

SYMBOLS OF WIRING DEVICES IN A DIAGRAM OR PLANS

To understand and read the whole diagram, first an electrician must identify the different symbols of
devices in the diagram. In building wiring, the efficient electricians must identify properly and recognized
major devices in the diagram, the following are examples:

DEVICES SYMBOLS
Bulbs/Lamp

Switches S1- Single switch

S2- Duplex or two gang switch
S3- Triplex or three gang switch
S3w- Three way switch
S4w- Four way switch

Note: There are other electrical devices that you will encounter in reading electrical diagram, given
above are only some.

SAQ-1: What will happen if an electrical installation is done without an electrical plan?
SAQ-2: What is being compromised if the one in charge in performing the job does not know how
to interpret electrical plans?
