EXTERNALLY BONDED (EB) CFRP

 Well-known / established system

 Wide plates and wraps
 Suitable for concrete, steel, masonry and
timber structures
 Performance relies on quality of materials
and quality of application / installation

TYPICAL APPLICATION CHALLENGES

1. Highly dependent on surface condition (surface hardness)

2. Need for extensive profile levelling
3. Time consuming and costly substrate preparation
4. Limitations for complex structural geometry i.e. Arched structures
5. Exposed systems, may need additional protection
NEAR SURFACE MOUNTED (NSM) CFRP

Unlike EB CFRP, where the wide laminates are bonded on the substrate, NSM solutions
are small pultruded CFRP composite, applied in the interior of grooves on the
substrate’s surface, embedded laterally or longitudinally.

 Suitable for concrete, masonry and timber
BENEFITS OF NSM VS. EB CFRP
Design Advantages:
1. Enhanced adhesion between CFRP and the substrate due to increase contact area
2. CFRP is mechanically protected due to deeper embedment
3. Risk of buckling is reduced due to suitability for compression zones and
compressed members

Application Advantages:
1. Embedded application, therefore
a. Surface condition is not so much of an issue
b. More fire resistance Time and Cost
c. Less visible strengthening Efficiency
d. Protected from mechanical damage
2. Limited surface preparation and minimal amount of
materials for preparation of substrate
3. Faster job thru faster preparation and application

4. Use of injectable chemical anchoring is possible.

Versatility
5. Strings can be used for a wide range of strengthening
applications

22
DESIGN
Groove dimensions and geometrical limitations

 The minimum depth of the grooves.

 The minimum and maximum widths for the slot.
 The minimum spacing between consecutive CFRP profiles.
 The minimum distance to the edge of the RC member.

Two of the main guidelines comprising those parameters are:

American Concrete Institute – (ACI440.2R-08, 2008), Guide for the Design and
Construction of Externally Bonded FRP Systems for Strengthening Concrete Structures,
reported by the committee 440 of the American Concrete Institute.

Sika Carbodur Software

concrete structures using fiber composite materials, reported by the Concrete Society.

24
DESIGN

ACI 440.2R - Groove dimensions and geometrical limitations

NSM Rods and Strings

Assuming 10 mm diameter rod and string

25
DESIGN
Apart from those guidelines, further information concerning the dimensioning of the
grooves is detailed in the Sika NSM Method Statement. Hence, the dimensions of the
slots can be defined for the NSM Sika range as follows:

Sika NSM Groove size

ACI 440.2R-08
Profile Width Depth
Plates - S2.025 ≥ 7.5 mm ≥ 30 mm

Plates - S212 ≥ 3.6 mm ≥ 30 mm

Strings - FX50 C ≥ 15 mm ≥ 15 mm

Rods - BC10 ≥ 15 mm ≥ 15 mm

The table above lists the recommended groove sizes for standard application
conditions in reinforced concrete. Specific site or structural conditions or standards
26
may require different groove sizes
DESIGN
Strengthening based on NSM

The ACI guideline includes a simplified method for the calculation of by means of NSM systems. The
calculation comprises 2 steps:

1. Determination of the effective strain of the FRP profile (εfe)

For simply supported beams, the CFRP laminate should be terminated at least a distance equal to ldb
beyond a “critical section”. This determination of this critical section is different in the case of simply
supported beams than for those cases concerning continuous beams
𝑓𝑓𝑑 = 𝐸𝑓 ∙𝜀𝑓𝑑

27
DESIGN
2 Determination of the necessary development length (ldb)

where 𝒅𝒃 is the diameter of the NSM rod, ab and bb correspond to the short and long
dimensions of a NSM plate respectively, and 𝝉𝒃 is the average bond strength for NSM
profiles (𝜏𝑏=6.90Mpa as indicated by ACI 440.2R-08.

HEALTH AND SAFETY

Personal protection
 Safety shoes, gloves and other appropriate
skin protection should be worn at all times.
Always wear nitrile based protective gloves
when handling epoxy adhesives as they can
cause skin irritation.
 Appropriate eye protection should be worn
at all times whilst handling, mixing and
installing the products.
 Always wash hands with suitable soap and
clean water after handling the products and
before food consumption, smoking, visiting
the toilet and after finishing work.
 The work area needs to be well ventilated
and operatives should take frequent breaks
in fresh air to avoid any other health issues.
 Always wear a dust mask/respirator when
grinding concrete. Do not inhale the
concrete dust.

INSTALLATION PROCEDURE
Substrate preparation
1. Checking of the existing rebar layout
The concrete has to be checked for the depth of
reinforcements and care must be taken not to cut
through existing reinforcing steel, steel tendons,
embedded ducts, or other materials within the substrate.

2. Cutting of concrete and groove provision

Grooves are cut with a depth and width according to the
design recommendations. The surface must be clean,
sound, and dry.

3. Cleaning
Remove dust, laitance, grease, curing compounds,
impregnations, waxes, or other foreign particles,
together with any damaged concrete or other bond
inhibiting materials form the surface.
In addition, immediately prior to installation, clean the
cut groove with high pressure water and remove the
excess water with oil-free compressed air.

33
INSTALLATION PROCEDURE
1. Cut CFRP profile to an appropriate length on site with a diamond
blade on a chop saw, or with a grinding disc. The cutting zone should be
wrapped with adhesive tape to minimize any splintering

2. A suitable adhesive is selected and prepared

according to the relevant PDS

Products Mixing procedure

Sikadur® Add component B to component A and stir with
a mixing spindle or paddle fitted to an electric
low speed mixer (max. 500 rpm) to avoid
entrapping air. Mix thoroughly for about 3
minutes to a homogeneous mix with a uniform
grey color
Sika® Anchorfix- No mixing required
3001

3. The adhesive is filled into an empty cartridge / barrel gun or

directly to the substrate and then grooves are filled from the bottom
up, Special care shall be taken that the grooves are filled completely
and
35
that no air is entrapped.
INSTALLATION PROCEDURE

Installation

4. Within the open time of the epoxy (dependent on the

temperature), the CFRP profiles are pressed into the
adhesive in the grooves. If necessary, additional adhesive
can be applied to fill the grooves, or any excess adhesive
is removed. Do not re-use the excess adhesive.

5. Strike the surface with a trowel to force out any air

and provide a clean installation. For optimum adhesion
of any possible additional layers, the adhesive may be
broadcast and covered lightly with quartz sand. Note
that any sand must be graded, clean and kiln dried.

1. Embedded application, therefore
a. Surface condition is not so much of an issue
b. More fire resistance Time and Cost
c. Invisible strengthening Efficiency
2. Limited surface preparation and minimal amount of
materials for preparation of substrate
3. Faster job thru faster preparation and application

4. Use of injectable chemical anchoring is possible.

5. Strings can be used for a wide range of strengthening Versatility
applications
