Reading 1

Like The Molave

R. Zulueta da Costa

Not yet, Rizal, not yet. Sleep not in peace:

There are a thousand waters to be spanned;
There are a thousand mountains to be crossed;
There are a thousand crosses to be borne.
Our shoulders are not strong; our sinews are
Grown flaccid with dependence, smug with ease
Under another's wing. Rest not in peace;
Not yet, Rizal, not yet. The land has need
Of young blood-and, what younger than your own,
Forever spilled in the great name of freedom,
Forever oblate on the altar of
The free? Not you alone, Rizal. O souls
And spirits of the martyred brave, arise!
Arise and scour the land! Shed once again
Your willing blood! Infuse the vibrant red
Into our thin anaemic veins; until
We pick up your Promethean tools and, strong,
Out of the depthless matrix of your faith
In us, and on the silent cliffs of freedom,
We carve for all time your marmoreal dream!
Until our people, seeing, are become
Like the Molave, firm, resilient, staunch,
Rising on the hillside, unafraid,
Strong in its own fibre, yes, like the Molave!

Share your Thoughts and Ideas

1. What does line 1 to 8 describe? Explain your answer.

- The poem's first eight lines describe how Rizal must not rest easy because people
need someone to inspire them again to reclaim their freedom. The Philippines
became dependent on other nations and must fight for their country once again to
thrive independently.
2. Why does our land need young blood? What is it for?
- Rizal believed that the youth is the future. The Philippines needs young blood to fight
for their country and reclaim their freedom against other countries. Youngblood will
lead the future into success.
3. According to the poem, we need "martyred spirits" for what?
- Rizal will be inspiring people as before to reclaim their country's freedom, but he is
not alone. Alongside him are martyred spirits, the Philippines' beloved heroes, to
inspire and toughen Filipinos like the molave.
4. How do you relate the 'Promethean tools' in the poem? Explain your answer.
- Promethean tools in the poem are the innovations made by the creative minds of the
Filipinos. They will use these tools to thrive on their own and get rid of their
dependence on other countries.
5. Why do you think the author likened us for a molave tree? Defend your answer.
- Molave trees are firm, resilient, and staunch. The author likened the Filipinos to a
molave tree to remind us that they need to be strong and courageous to reclaim their
freedom and thrive independently.

Enhancement

During the time of the Japanese invasion, Filipino poets wrote haikus. Your activity is to make
your own haiku on any theme and recite it using a video with its appropriate backdrop or
background. This will only be a short clip and has to be sent to my gmail account.

Dead branches perched by a crow.

Leaves falling fear not,
Prompting the fresh ones to grow.
