Chapter 2: Start the Sedomat 2500

2. Start the Sedomat 2500

The Sedomat has no On/Off switch. It is started by applying power. Wait until the controller is completely
started.

2.1 Touch screen calibration

If you find out that the touch screen does not respond to your commands it might by necessary to re-calibrate it.
During startup, the touch can be calibrated.
The message: Touch and hold the screen for at least 2 seconds to re-calibrate is displayed for 3 seconds.
During this time, touch the screen for 2 seconds to start the calibration or ignore this message if no calibration is
needed.
Note that if there is no input for five seconds, the controller aborts the calibration. After the
calibration is started, a symbol of 4 arrows and the message Touch and hold the middle of the
target until it moves around the screen is displayed on the screen three times: Touch the display
exactly in the center of the symbol until the arrow symbol changes position on the screen. Repeat
this three times.
Then the message Touch screen is re-adjusted! is displayed. Otherwise the message Calibration aborted!
Previous calibration is loaded” is displayed. If you want to repeat the calibration, restart the Sedomat.

After the calibration the controller initializes.

2.2 Adjust display brightness

Chapter 7: Running a batch

7. Running a batch
Names and icons of some dialogs are defined in the configuration. In this manual only the default
names are used.

7.1 Batches
The Sedomat works with batches. Each batch has a program related to it and may be accompanied by batch pa-
rameters and batch information. The batch parameters allow that the same program is used for different filling
levels or with different quantities. The batch information has no influence on the process. This information is only
used to provide additional data about the batch.
The Sedomat can be loaded with two batches: the current batch and the next batch. While the current batch is
running, the program for the next batch can already be loaded, allowing parallel functions in it to be activated.
For example, the side tank can be filled from the moment that the tank is no longer needed for the current
batch.
Batches can be entered on the Sedomat or can be fetched from SedoMaster. SedoMaster allows a detailed plan-
ning.
Batches are moved from the next batch to the current batch when a program ends.

7.2.2 Load next batch

The next batch can be already selected, when the current batch is load.
Select Batch Æ Load next batch.
The dialog is similar to the Load current batch dialog, see 7.2, ”Load batch”.
The data of the next batch can be changed as long as no parallel function of its program is activated. In case a
next batch is already loaded and the Load next batch dialog box is executed again, the controller asks if the next
batch may be aborted and the old data may be replaced by the new data.

Sedomat 1800
The Sedomat 1800 does not support the “load next batch” feature.

7.2.3 Load batch by barcode

The barcode on the routing card is a formatted bar-
code. It contains the instruction “Read batch”, fol-
lowed by the batch identification. The length of the
batch identification is maximum 12 characters. Ex-
ample (CODE 128) with batch identification “1234”:

There should be no dialog box open on the screen. When the barcode is scanned, the Sedomat checks whether
there is a batch active. If a batch is active, following dialog box appears:

Confirm the dialog box and scan the barcode again. The scanned batch identification is filled in the Load current
batch dialog box. The operator should now fill in the remaining windows as described in 7.2.1, “Load current
batch”.

It is also possible to first select Batch Æ Load current batch and then scan the barcode.

To scan the barcode for the second batch, select Batch Æ Load next batch and scan the barcode. It will be
filled in the Load next batch dialog box. The operator should fill in the remaining windows as described in 7.2.2,

7.3 Fetching batches from SedoMaster

There are three ways to load a batch from SedoMaster into the Sedomat:

7.3.1 Manually
Select Batch Æ Load current batch or Batch Æ Load next batch.
In the dialog box are three buttons:

The next planned batch as well as the required programs are fetched from SedoMaster.

Used to fetch a particular batch from SedoMaster. This batch can be another than the next planned
batch. First fill in the batch identification. The batch identification can be defined by SedoMaster as a batch
number or production number. Then select Host select. The batch is now loaded into the Sedomat.

This feature allows loading a batch from SedoMaster by the order number.
Select the button Host orders.
The dialog box Send order request opens.
Select Add order (1) and fill in the order number.
Confirm the order number with .

Select Send. The batch will be loaded into the

Sedomat.

The SedoMaster can also send a message instead of

loading the batch. See 9.2.2, “Host Messages”

7.3.2 Automatically
The running program contains the special function “Next batch”. When this function is executed, the next
planned batch is loaded as second batch.

7.3.3 By barcode
The barcode on the routing card is a formatted bar-
code. It contains the instruction “Get batch”, fol-
lowed by the batch identification. The length of the
batch identification is maximum 12 characters. Ex-
ample (CODE 128) with batch identification
“ABCD”:

There should be no dialog box open on the screen. When the barcode is scanned, the Sedomat checks whether
there is a batch active. If a batch is active, following dialog box appears:

Confirm the dialog box and scan the barcode again. The scanned batch identification is filled in the Load current
batch dialog box and the Sedomat automatically fetches the batch from SedoMaster. The dialog box closes
automatically as soon as the requested batch is loaded. Now the Sedomat displays the program view.

Instead of scanning the batch identifications, you

can also scan order numbers.
This opens the dialog box Send order request.
Other order numbers are added by repeated scans.

Select Send. The batch will be loaded into the

Sedomat.

The SedoMaster can also send a message instead of

loading the batch. See 9.2.2, “Host Messages”

7.3.4 Remarks

Chapter 7: Running a batch

When loading a batch’s assigned dye-program fails, the error 113 occurs (“Program does not exist”)
The additional error code has a meaning:

0: Te program file does not exist or is not within the list of the maximum programs.
<>0: The error code corresponds to the system error code, indicating the reason for file access failure

Error messages are only issued if the loading was initiated by the Sedomat user.

7.4 Check current batch

This menu-item is used to compare the current
batch number with the barcode on the routing card.
The barcode on the routing card is a formatted bar-
code. It contains the instruction “Check batch”, fol-
lowed by the batch identification. The length of the
batch identification is maximum 12 characters. Ex-
ample (CODE 128) with batch identification “A2B3C“

Scan the barcode on the routing card. The Sedomat will automatically bring the dialog box Compare batch num-
ber on the screen and compare the barcode with the current batch number (local). The result is indicated in the
dialog box:

or

Quit the dialog box with Close.

It is also possible to first call the dialog box Check current batch on screen with Batch Æ Check
current batch and then scan the barcode.

7.5 Program
A program consists of a sequence of functions that are executed. Most functions
have parameters. For example, the function heating has the parameters tempera-
ture, time and gradient. The function and the parameters are represented by an
icon: a large icon for the function, small icons for the function parameters:

When the function is not in the magnified area, only the first function parameter is
shown:

The program is divided in three windows. The left window always controls the main process. The other parallel
windows usually control parallel processes e.g. side tank units, preparation units, dosing units. Each window con-
tains functions applying to the corresponding parallel unit.

36 _______________________________________ Operator manual – Sedomat 1800 - Sedomat 2500 - Sedomat 5500 – © Sedo Treepoint GmbH
Chapter 7: Running a batch

When the functions are synchronous the program is executed line by line, all functions on a program line are
executed simultaneously. But functions can also be asynchronous. That means the next function is already
started although the main function is not finished.
When a function is finished then the next line is executed. For some functions, an acknowledgement that the
previous function is done, is not required, so the Sedomat will not wait to execute it. This way, it is possible that
in the same window, several functions are active at the same time. Example: during the filling, the operator is
called to add chemicals.
Each window has a position pointer pointing to the function being executed or pointing to the function that will
be executed next. Position pointers are magenta.
A program always contains special functions that control the flow of the program. These functions do not perform
any action on the machine. These functions are green.
Examples: PROG START, PROG END, LABEL FUNCT, JUMP

7.7 Starting a batch

There are four ways a batch can be started:
● The operator selects Start on the Sedomat.
● When the current batch ends, the next batch becomes the current one and is started automatically.
● SedoMaster automatically starts a batch according to the planning.
● A batch is started manually on SedoMaster.

When a program is started, the following items in the status area change:

1. The green “program

started” icon.
2. The status icon , 1
indicating a started 2
batch.

The program view shows the loaded program. Algorithms (see 7.13, “Algorithms”) are replaced by values when
the function is activated. Question parameters (see 7.12, “Question parameters”) remain until they are entered.

7.10 Operator call

Operator interventions that require a decision from the operator concerning the program flow are programmed
with the special function “Operator call”. An example of this is the function “take a sample”. When the program
executes an Operator call the program waits for operator intervention.

Depending on the configuration and the program in

the PLC an external signal will be given or an alarm
will be generated.

The Operator call dialog box is shown automatically:

To take some other action first, the Operator call dia-
log box can be closed with Cancel and opened
again by selecting the function “Operator call”.
Select the field Select task, the following options are
displayed:

Remark:
An Operator call in an additional program
only has the option Goto next line.

● Goto next line

Executes the next program line of the
dye program. Example: This option will
be used after operator interventions like
add chemicals.

● Execute addition
Is enabled when at least one ad-
ditional program has been linked
to the process.
The operator selects one of the
presented additional programs.
When the additional program is
finished, the same Operator call
is executed again, allowing the
operator to execute the same or
another additional program or to
go to the next line. Example: The
operator selects an appropriate
additional program depending on
the sample. For more details see
11.4.2, “Additional programs”.

In the program view an addi-

tional program is indicated with
a blue title bar:

• Goto label
Is enabled when the program
contains at least one label in
the main window. A label is a
special function for marking the
beginning of a specific program
section. Program sections in-
tended to be used with an Op-
erator call are usually put at the
end of the program and have a
Jump function to return to the
Operator call.
The label list contains the pro-
gram line for easier location in
the program in case the same
label is used more than once.
The operator selects one of the
labels. The program will resume
with the program line after this
label. Example: The operator se-
lects a label that marks an ap-
propriate part of the program
depending on the sample. See
11.5, “Operator call: Go to la-
bel”.

7.10.1 Special function LOAD/UNLOAD

This special function works like an operator call, but only in the window where it was programmed. From the
field Select task, only the options ‘Goto next line’ and ‘Goto Label’ are available.

7.11 Operator intervention

Besides the special function Operator call with which the program flow can be changed by the operator also par-
allel functions are possible to call for operator intervention. For example a function like Call Tank A calls the op-
erator to do something with tank A and to confirm when the action is done.
The mechanism used by the Sedomat and PLC to execute such function is the following: when a Call function is
executed by the Sedomat it is send to the PLC. To notify the operator the PLC can e.g. activate a lamp or send a
PLC message to be displayed at the Sedomat. When the intervention is done, the operator confirms by e.g. se-
lecting a button on the control panel of the machine or by selecting an operator key on the Sedomat. After con-
firmation the program sequencer jumps to the next function in the same parallel window.

7.12 Question parameters

Usually all functions have constant function parameters but the programmer can decide
not to fill in a parameter value but to leave the selection of the parameter value for the
operator. The function parameter is therefore defined as question parameter. In the pro-
gram view such parameter is displayed as red question marks:

When the controller executes a function with a question parameter the status area will display the alarm ‘ENTER
QUESTION PARAMETER’. Depending on the configuration and the program in the PLC, an external attention signal
will be given.
From software version 1.10 the controller directly changes to the program view when a question parameter gets
active.
When the operator now enters the Program view or when the Program view is already displayed the Edit func-
tion dialog box comes on screen showing the function definition. Only the windows with the function parameters
that have to be defined by the operator are enabled. Enter values for the question parameters and confirm the

dialog box. The function will be executed now and the program continues. The red question marks are replaced
by the selected value(s).

Chapter 7: Running a batch

7.13 Algorithms
The programmer can define function parameter as algorithms. Algorithms are the result
of a calculation with certain variables. The result of the calculation is used in the function.
Algorithms are displayed in red. For further information contact the programmer or see
11.8.1, “Algorithms“.

7.14 Master/Slave operation

When machines operate in coupled mode, beside the standard status, each Sedomat can have one of the follow-
ing status icons: (see 4.1, “Status area “).

Master
This Sedomat runs the program and controls its PLC. The master Sedomat sends the active functions to the slave
Sedomat. The master Sedomat waits for the termination of the function on both Sedomat controllers before exe-
cuting the next program line.
Only one Sedomat can be the master.
In the right bottom corner of the status icon, a "2" marks the coupled mode.

Slave
A slave Sedomat executes the functions sent by the master and cannot run a program. The program view of the
slave Sedomat is disabled. The status area shows the status of the slave machine. The status icon only shows a
color square.
It is only possible to stop the program on this Sedomat.

Chapter 8: Interventions

8. Interventions
In some cases it might be possible to change the course of a program, e.g.:

• Stop the process for a longer period, e.g. for the weekend
• Abort a batch for same reason
• Change function parameters and start/stop functions: during program development, for tests, to correct pro-
gram errors, to solve disturbances and malfunctions.

Attention:
• During normal operation, make as less interventions in a running program as possible. The tools de-
scribed in this chapter should only be used in exceptional circumstances and with great care. Usually
the configuration of the Sedomat and it’s PLC define some safety measures, but the user has to be
sure that the intervention he will take is safe. Concerning SedoMaster, the planning can be disorgan-
ized.

8.1 Difference between Halt and Stop

Apparently, there is no difference between these words, but there indeed is a difference:
Halt Stop
Action Batch Æ Program halt Stop
or
Select a function. In the dialog box Edit
function select Halt.
Result Stops the sequencers of all windows Stops the sequencers of all windows
(see 8.2). The active functions carry (see 8.3). All functions are aborted
on. No new functions are started. prematurely. No new functions are
started.
Status area icon

Change function under cursor Active functions: switch off or restart Change function parameters
with new parameters.
Inactive functions: switch on or change
parameters
Abort batch Not possible Batch Æ Batch abort

• The position pointers can be moved to another function.

• After a halt, it is still possible to stop the program.
• Both a halt and a stop can be initiated automatically by an alarm.

8.2 Halt
A halt stops the sequencers of all windows. Select Batch Æ Program halt. The active functions stay active
until they are completed. No new functions are started. The position pointers stay on their position (from soft-
ware version 1.10 on they can be moved to another position).

After a halt, it is possible to:

• Switch active functions off.

• Switch inactive functions on.
A00420 04 EN 17/7/2008 ANHA

• Change function parameters of active and of inactive functions.

• Resume the program where it was halted.
• Stop the program.

44 _______________________________________ Operator manual – Sedomat 1800 - Sedomat 2500 - Sedomat 5500 – © Sedo Treepoint GmbH
Chapter 8: Interventions

8.3 Stop
A program stop can only be done with Stop. A stop is different from a halt. A stop stops the sequencers of all
windows. All active functions are stopped instantly. No new functions are started. The sequence pointers stay on
their position.

After a stop, it is possible to:

• Change function parameters.

• Reposition the sequencers of all windows and restart the program.
• Leave the sequencers of all windows on their position and restart the program.
• Abort the batch.

8.4 Browsing during a stop

Position pointer versus cursor:
Each window has a magenta position pointer. This pointer indicates the function being executed or pending to be
executed.
The blue cursor (frame) is always located in the magnified area, either in the main window or in one of the par-
allel windows. The cursor simply points the function that will be the subject of the action that is carried out.

Browsing in a running program is explained in chapter 7.8 “Browsing.”

8.4.1 Set position

When a program is stopped, it is possible to change the position of the position pointers of each window. Just
browse to another function in a path, select Context Æ Set position.
The position pointers of each path can be positioned individually. It even is possible to move the position of a
parallel window to a function in the next batch. In case the position pointers is positioned on an empty place, it
will move to the next function in that window when the program is restarted.

8.4.2 Set line position

It is also possible to change the position of all windows to the same line with one action. Just browse to one of
the functions of that line, select Context Æ Set line position.
This action can e.g. be used to change the position to a program line containing operator calls or labels. In case
such functions are not marked together, alarm 77 "INVALID STEP POSITIONS" will appear. It is not possible to
change the position to a next batch.
Example:
The preparation has already been done manually. The program that will be used contains a preparation section
at the beginning, but this section should not be executed again. The operator moves the sequence pointers of
the loaded program to a position after the preparation section, and then starts the program.

Before changing position pointers positions, be sure you really want to change positions, because it is
not possible to regain the original positions automatically.

It is not possible to change the position of sequence pointers during a halt (from software version 1.10
on they can be moved to another position).

Chapter 8: Interventions

8.5 Restart after a stop

When after a stop a program is restarted with the Start button, there are two possibilities:

Restart functions:
The program will restart the functions at the posi-
tion pointers.
Continue functions:
The interrupted functions will be completed and the
program continues.
Just select the appropriate button to choose an op-
tion.

8.6 Change function

This option is used to manipulate the function on the blue cursor in a halted or stopped program. Depending on
the program status it is possible to switch a function on and off and/or to change the function parameters. Spe-
cial functions cannot be manipulated.

If the function Result

… has not yet been activated: The function will be activated with the new parameters when it is reached.
… is active now: Select On function to activate the function with the new parameters if this
is the intention.
… has already finished: Changing parameters of a function that has finished has no sense.

First browse in the program view to the function

that has to be changed and mark it with the cursor.
Select Context Æ Change function and change
the parameters if needed:

The Edit function dialog box can have following buttons:

On function To switch an inactive function on, or to reactivate an active function with the
same or with new parameters (see also important remark below).

Off function To switch an active function off.

To change the function parameters without switching the function on.
Set Parameter To change function parameters without switching the function on.

To quit, select Cancel.

A00420 04 EN 17/7/2008 ANHA

Changing the function in a loaded program has no effect on the stored original program.

Chapter 8: Interventions

Important remark concerning an active function with new parameters:

Example:
Active function Restart with new temperature parameter

When the active function e.g. Heat/Cool is changed 5 minutes after the 50°C is reached, the tempera-
ture will rise to 60°C with a gradient of 2°C/min. The hold time will restart after the new temperature
set point again. The user has to consider this and if necessary adapt the parameters accordingly.

8.7 Function on/off

This functionality is used to switch functions off and on independently from the program status. Functions that
are not available in the program can be started. All functions, except special functions, can be switched on or off.

This functionality has to be used with care. Therefore, it can be disabled in the Sedomat parameter.

Select the Function view. Read also to chapter 4.2.2 “

lel or Data function. First select
a Function, then the parame-
ters.

When the selected function is not active the button On function is enabled. When the selected function is
active only the button Off Function is enabled.
Remark:
Only one main function can be active at the same time.
A stopped program cannot be restarted when a main function has been activated using “On function/Off func-
tion” until that function is finished.
When a program is running, it is not possible to switch a main function on, while another main function is active

8.8 Interrupt program

When a process has to be interrupted for a longer period, e.g. for the weekend, the operator or supervisor has to
indicate a program line on which it is safe to stop the program. No need to wait until the program reaches a safe
position and then stop, an interrupt can be inserted beforehand.

Technically, an interrupt
can be put on any pro-
gram line. To set an inter-
rupt, open the program
view and put the cursor to
a safe program line on
which the program should
be interrupted and select
Context Æ Interrupt.
Immediately after setting
an interrupt, the active
function in the main path
returns to the magnified
area. The program line
with the interrupt gets a
red line.
A00420 04 EN 17/7/2008 ANHA

As long as the interrupt is not yet reached, it is possible to:

48 _______________________________________ Operator manual – Sedomat 1800 - Sedomat 2500 - Sedomat 5500 – © Sedo Treepoint GmbH
Chapter 8: Interventions

● Delete the interrupt: Repeat the interrupt command the on the same program line.
● Move the interrupt: Just set an interrupt on the new program line.

When the sequencer reaches the marked program line, the program stops. The marked line is not executed. To
resume the program, select Start. The program will now continue and the interruption mark disappears.

8.9 Abort batch

To abort a batch stop the program by selecting the Stop. Then select Batch Æ Batch abort. For safety
reasons, you have to confirm this action.
Remarks:
• After aborting a batch, the batch data will be deleted. The program is not deleted unless it was created with
SedoMaster.
• It is not possible to unload an already started current batch using SedoMaster.
• If the Load current batch dialog box contains errors, abort it (and also the second batch that now became the
current batch) and reenter it correctly (and also the second batch).
• If the Load next batch dialog contains errors, but is disabled for changes, wait until the first batch ends. The
second batch now becomes the first batch. Abort the first batch, and reenter it correctly.

8.10 Stop declarations

When the program has stopped, the operator should inform SedoMaster about the stop reason. The available
stop reasons are defined during the configuration. Stop declarations can be entered manually and by scanning a
barcode.

8.10.1 Entering stop declarations manually

Select Batch Æ Stop declaration. The Stop declaration dialog box appears.

Select the white box (1), to open the selection.

Select a stop declaration.
Confirm the stop declaration witht Execute.

The Send stop declaration dialog box stays on the screen allowing to see host messages (2) from SedoMaster
and allowing sending another stop declaration. Host messages can also be observed in the Messages Dialog box.
(See 9.2.2, “Host Messages”)

Quit the Send stop declaration dialog box with Cancel.

8.10.2 Entering stop declarations by barcode

The operator uses a sheet containing a list of the
stop reasons including the corresponding barcodes.
These barcodes are formatted barcodes. They con-
tain the instruction “Stop declaration”, followed by
the stop code. The length of the stop code is maxi-
mum 3 characters. Example (CODE 128) for stop
declaration 10:
To send a stop declaration, scan the corresponding barcode on the sheet.

The Send stop declaration dialog box stays on the screen allowing to see host messages (2) from SedoMaster
and allowing sending another stop declaration. Host messages can also be observed in the Messages Dialog box.

Chapter 9: Alarms and messages

9. Alarms and messages

9.1 Alarms
When an error is detected in the Sedomat, the PLC, the process or the machine, an alarm is generated. In case of
a serious error, the program is stopped or halted. On program stop, all functions are stopped. A halt freeze the
sequencers. The active functions are completed. In case of a warning alarm, there is no influence on the process.

An alarm can result in the activation of a beacon or a horn via the alarm marker. There are five different alarm
markers for different levels of importance. The configuration defines which alarm marker is activated by the
alarm. The PLC program defines what happens when an alarm marker is set.

All alarms have a priority. The 1 2

alarm with the highest priority is
displayed in the status area with
the alarm icon (1) on a red back-
ground (2).
When there are two alarms with the same priority, then the first occurred alarm is displayed. The other alarms
can only be seen via the Alarms dialog box (see below). When there are no alarms, the reserved status area is
used for local messages, PLC messages or stop declarations. These messages indicate background actions. Local
messages are displayed on a pink background, PLC messages on a green background and stop declarations on a
blue background..

9.1.1 Alarm dialog box

Open the alarm dialog box by se-
lecting the displayed alarm in the
status line or select Batch Æ
Clear alarms.
The dialog box shows all currently
active alarms. The list is updated in
real time. The alarms are listed in
priority order, with the highest pri-
ority on top of the list. The list
shows the alarm number, the cor-
responding text and the action.

There are three possible actions taken by the Sedomat :

Stop program: The program is stopped immediately. The user has to remove the cause for the alarm and
then delete the alarm.
Halt program: The sequencers are freezed and the active functions will be continued. The user has to remove
the cause for the alarm and then delete the alarm.
No action: The program proceeds. These alarms are warnings. They disappear automatically when the
cause for the alarm is removed.
It is not necessarily to remedy the cause for the alarm. If the alarm is not deleted automatically, it can be manu-
ally deleted (See 9.1.2, ”Deleting alarms”).

The 96 alarms are divided according their origin:

Alarm 1-32, 41-49, 57-64: User alarms. These alarms are defined during the configuration.
Alarm 33-40, 50-55: System alarms caused by the PLC
A00420 04 DE 17/7/2008 ANHA

Alarm 65-95: System alarms caused by Sedomat

The system alarms are explained below. Ignore the missing alarm numbers and the marker.

Chapter 9: Alarms and messages

9.2 Messages
There are different types of messages.
• PLC messages
• Host messages
• Stop declarations

If there are no alarms to display, messages are displayed in the status area (1). Touch the message in the status
to open the Messages dialog box. Alternatively select Batch Æ Messages.
The PLC is also able to call or close the Messages dialog box.

9.2.1 PLC Messages

PLC messages are e.g. used to give a certain message to the operator. PLC messages can contain numerical in-
formation. They appear in the status area only when there are neither alarms nor local messages. PLC messages
are displayed on a green background. PLC messages are defined by the configuration.

9.2.2 Host Messages

The SedoMaster can send messages to the Sedomat. Host messages can be one line or one screen of 32 lines of
40 characters long. For example, alarms concerning an external dispenser system are notified via the host mes-
sage.
On receipt of a host message, alarm 91 or 92 can be generated. The host system defines if an alarm is gener-
ated. The host message is displayed only, when it has a content. Unless other messages are displayed in the

9.3 Administration data

To monitor the responsibilities for the respective machine, there is the option to assign 16 free configurable ad-
ministration data.

Administration data has two parts:

• The index: for example the personnel number. The index is defined during the configuration. Maximum
three characters.
• The data: any alphanumerical information. Maximum 12 characters.

Administration data can be entered manually and by scanning a barcode.

9.3.1 Entering administration data manually

Select Batch Æ Administration data. The Send administration data dialog box appears.

Select the white box (1) to choose the administration data from the selection. Fill the Data Field (2).
Select Execute to send administration data.

9.3.2 Entering administration data by barcode

The barcode contains the administration index as
well as predefined data. The operator uses a sheet
containing a list with predefined administration data
including the corresponding barcodes. These bar-
codes are formatted barcodes. They contain the in-
struction “Administration data”, followed by the
index and the data. The length of the index is maxi-
mum 3 characters, and the length of the data is
maximum 12 characters.
Example (CODE 128) for administration index 1 and
data ADMDATA1:

Chapter 10: Logging

10. Logging
The Sedomat records analog values (e.g. temperature, pressure, level), logical values (e.g. pump direction) and
function parameter values. The data is memorized per batch, along with all events. The record interval is set in
the configuration. The logging is started when loading a batch and stopped when the program ends.
The oldest batch data is removed when there is insufficient memory for the new batch data. The number of re-
corded batches is limited to 20. The amount of recorded time depends on the number of configured items that
are recorded. This number is defined by the configuration and is maximum 64.

Sedomat 1800
The Sedomat 1800 records maximum 2 items.

10.1 Logging initialization

Before curves can be displayed in the Logging view,
the user must select the desired values from the
recorded values. The Sedomat records up to 64 val-
ues. The configuration defines which values are re-
corded. A combination of maximum four of these
values can be displayed on the screen.
Select Management Æ Settings.. Æ Initialize
logging view.

This dialog box shows the settings of the four curves. First, select the type of data, and then the name of the
value. The number of selectable values depends on the configuration. If a curve should no longer be displayed,
just select No curve for the type. Remark that this action does not delete the recorded data.
Select Execute to save the settings.

Sedomat 1800
Since the Sedomat 1800 records maximum 2 items, the logging initialisation is not available.

10.2 Logging view

Select Logging to view
the curves. Remark that
the logging view operates
different local at the con- 1
troller and when operating

Chapter 11: Programs

11. Programs
11.1 What is a program?
A process of a machine is controlled by a program in the Sedomat. The program consists of a sequence of func-
tions that are executed. A function is a specific task such as FILL TANK, HEAT TANK, ADD CHEMICALS, etc. Most
functions need parameters, e.g. the function HEAT TANK needs a target temperature. A function can have up to
five function parameters.
Integrated in the Sedomat, there is a PLC-software (Programmable Logic Controller). Also inputs and outputs
(I/O’s) can be integrated in the Sedomat or can be connected via PROFIBUS DP (option). The I/O’s contain digital
and analogue inputs and outputs to control the machine. The PLC-software executes the functions received from
the Sedomat by switching the valves, heating elements, motors, etc. of the machine on and off. The process in-
formation, such as temperature and level sensors are fed back to the inputs. Based on this feed back, the PLC-
software determines when the function is finished. The PLC-software informs the Sedomat that the next function
can be activated.
The actions that the PLC-software will execute when a function is activated are defined in the instruction list (IL)
of the PLC-software. Just like the configuration (definition of functions), the IL is created by the machine builder
and is created for a specific machine type. Both in the IL and Sedomat, safety rules are defined.

11.2 Configuration
The configuration adapts the Sedomat to a particular kind of machine. This part of the installation is usually done
by the machine manufacturer.
The configuration is divided in three major parts:

Machine visualization: This is the animated visualization of the machine on screen.

Type data: This data is necessary to create programs and contains the definition of the functions.
Sub type data: Makes sure that slightly different matches with the same type data can use the same set
A00420 04 EN 17/7/2008 ANHA

of programs.

The difference between type data and sub type data is illustrated in this example:

See also 11.8.1, “Algorithms” and configuration software “Sedo-Config for Windows”.

11.3 Sequential versus parallel processing

Some machine controllers execute function by function (sequential processing). This means that the next func-
tion is activated after the current function is finished.
The Sedomat however can control other functions simultaneously beside main functions.

In the parallel processing example below, the side tank is prepared while the main tank is loaded, the chemicals
are prepared while the main tank is heated and the side tank is drained during the process in the main tank. In
the example, the program run time becomes 35' shorter than the left sequential example.

Sequential processing Parallel processing

LOAD main tank 15 min LOAD main tank 15 min PREPARE side tank 10 min
PREPARE side tank 10 min TRANSFER to main 5 min

INJECT CHEMICALS 5 min DRAIN main tank 5 min
PROCESS 90 min Total process time: 140 min
DRAIN main tank 5 min
DRAIN side tank 5 min
Total process time: 175 min

The Sedomat allows the execution of several functions at the same moment in one step. This is done through
parallel processing. On the Sedomat, it is possible to program up to two functions in parallel with the main func-
tion. Appropriate programming and configuration enables simultaneous accomplishment of more than two func-
tions.
It even is possible to start the parallel steps of the next batch before the current batch is finished. Example: pre-
paring the side tank for the next batch, while the main tank is rinsed for the active batch.

Chapter 11: Programs

Windows and function groups

A program can be divided in three windows. Window 1 controls the main process and defines the sequence of
the program. The parallel windows contain parallel functions.
There are four kinds of functions:
Main functions (1) control the process and can therefore only to be used in window 1.
Examples: temperature control, fill, rinse and drain.
Parallel functions (2) control
the process in background
and can only be used in win-
dows 2 and 3. Examples:
preparation of the side tank
and chemicals, etc. 3
Data functions serve for en-
tering values. Examples:
speed of cloth, differential
pressure, temperature, etc.
Special functions (3) do not
3
control the machine, but are
used to structure programs.
Some of them can be put in 1
the main window as well as
in a parallel window. Exam- 1

11.4 Kinds of programs

There are three kinds of programs: processes (former main programs), treatments (former sub programs) and
additional programs. Only a process can be selected for a batch. The other program types cannot be started sepa-
rately.

11.4.1 Treatments
To structure programs and to save program memory, treatments can be used in different processes. A treatment
can even be used more than once for the same process. Create a treatment library by grouping frequently used
function sequences in a treatment. Treatments can only be used in processes (not in additional programs).

Treatments are added in the process with the special function “TREATMENT”. The last line of the treatment con-
tains the special function “PROG_RETURN” to return to the process.

In the example below, process 1 uses treatments A and B. Process 2 uses the treatments A and C. Process 3 uses
the treatments A and E. Treatment A is used by all three processes.

11.4.2 Additional programs

Additional programs are correctional programs of processes. An additional program cannot be started for a batch.
It can only be selected for execution by an operator call.

The special function “OPERATORCALL” brings the Operator

call dialog box on the screen and is used to call the op-
erator for an intervention, for example to add chemicals
or to take a sample.

After the intervention, the operator can select between

following tasks:

Goto next line Continue the program with the

next line.
Execute addition Execute one of the additional
programs that have been se-
lected for the program. Usually,
an additional program will be
used after taking a sample to do
corrections.
Goto Label Go to a label (see 11.5,
“Operator call: Go to label”)

Select input field “Select task”. From the list, select Exe-
cute addition. Select the field “Additional programs”.

The last line of the additional program contains the special function “PROG_RETURN” to return to the same op-
erator call in the process. The Operator Call dialog box will reappear.

Additional programs are linked to a process:. Only the selected additional programs can be used for a certain
process (see 12.5, “Add addition”).

11.5 Operator call: Go to label

Besides using additional pro-

grams to execute a certain Process
block of functions by an OP- PROG-START
ERATORCALL, it is possible to
use labels to do functionally PREPARATION
the same. Each block of func-
tions contains a special func- PROCESS
tion “JUMP” (1) to force the LABEL-FUNCT

just before the OPERATORCALL OPERATOR CALL
(2). Just before the groups, a
special function “JUMP” (3) FINISHING

11.6 Operator call

An operator call is mainly used for operator interventions, controlled by the program. Examples: sampling, load,
unload. An operator call calls the dialog box Operator call on screen (see 11.6, “Operator call”).
An operator call can be used in processes, treatments and in additional programs. In additional programs, there is
a limited use: the operator can only select “Goto next” line. An additional program cannot be executed from an
additional program.

11.7 Synchronizing windows

All the examples below are fictive functions. Only window 1 and 2 are used.

11.7.1 Synchronization and acknowledgement

Normally, all functions on a program line must be finished before the functions on the next line are executed.
This is called synchronizing. Example:

| FUNCTION A | FUNCTION E Here, function A and E are active (green). The position
pointer (magenta) is also pointing the functions.
| FUNCTION B
| FUNCTION C | FUNCTION F
| FUNCTION D

| FUNCTION A | FUNCTION E Function E finished. The position pointer changes to the

| FUNCTION B next function in the window 2, that is function F. This
function is not yet started.
| FUNCTION C | FUNCTION F
| FUNCTION D

| FUNCTION A | FUNCTION E
Function A finished. Function B is executed. Function F is
| FUNCTION B still not yet started.
| FUNCTION C | FUNCTION F
| FUNCTION D

| FUNCTION A | FUNCTION E Now, function B ended. Function C and F are executed

because the pointers of both windows are on the same
| FUNCTION B line.
| FUNCTION C | FUNCTION F
| FUNCTION D

For some functions, synchronization is not required. This means that these functions may be executed without
waiting for the previous functions to be finished. Usually, some parallel functions do not require synchronizing.
These functions make it possible that functions of the next batch are already executed before the current batch is
finished.
The machine builder defines the functions and the fact whether they should synchronize, in the configuration.
There are two additional definitions for functions: synchronization and acknowledgement. A “>” before and/or
after the function name indicates the characteristics of a function.

> Description
Synchronization Function The function will be executed when the preceding functions (with ac-
knowledgement) in all windows are finished.
No synchronization > Function The function will be executed when it is reached by the sequencer.
Acknowledgement Function The function must finish before the sequencer goes to the next function.
No acknowledgement Function > The sequencer will move to the next function right away.

Data functions are always functions without acknowledgement. Background functions usually are without ac-
knowledgement. The first example in this part shows functions with synchronization and with acknowledgement.

11.7.4 Without synchronization and without acknowledgement

It is also possible that a function is preceded and followed by a “>”. Such a function will be executed when it is
selected by the position pointer. The position pointer will immediately go to the next function.
Example: a chemical dispensing unit with more than one tank. The different tanks are supposed to be prepared
at the same time.

11.7.5 Programmer definable

Another possibility is that the configura-

tion does not define the function char-
acteristics. This means the programmer
can decide to define a function
with/without synchronization and
with/without acknowledgement.
The synchronization and acknowledge-
ment definitions are added during pro-
gram edit. Using programmer definable
synchronization and acknowledgment is
not recommended, because it makes
the programming difficult. When adapt-
ing these definitions of functions in an
existing program, it might be necessary
to add labels to synchronize.

11.7.6 Using labels to synchronize

Labels can be used to force the synchronization of the windows they are put in. A label has one parameter: the
label text. When a label with the same text is put in all three windows, and on the same program line, the se-
quencers of all windows must reach the label position before the subsequent functions are executed. This way, it
is possible to influence the normal execution of functions “without synchronization” and “without acknowledge-
ment”.

| FUNCTION A | FUNCTION D Function A and D are active. The position pointer is also
pointing these functions.
| FUNCTION B
| LABEL-FUNCT | LABEL-FUNCT
| FUNCTION C | >FUNCTION E

| FUNCTION A | FUNCTION D Function A finished. Function B is executed. Function D

| FUNCTION B finished. The sequencer of window 2 goes to the label.
When there was no label, function E (no synchronization)
| LABEL-FUNCT | LABEL-FUNCT would be executed.
| FUNCTION C | >FUNCTION E
Function B finished. The sequencer of window 1 goes to
| FUNCTION A | FUNCTION D the label. Both labels synchronize.
| FUNCTION B
| LABEL-FUNCT | LABEL-FUNCT
| FUNCTION C | >FUNCTION E

| FUNCTION A | FUNCTION D Immediately after the synchronization, the functions C

and E are executed.
| FUNCTION B
| LABEL-FUNCT | LABEL-FUNCT
| FUNCTION D | >FUNCTION E

11.8 Kinds of function parameters

Most functions need parameters. A function can have up to five parameters. Each parameter has a maximum, a
minimum and a default value. There are three kinds of parameters:

• Normal parameters
• Algorithms
• Question parameters

Normal parameters are fixed values. They are displayed in gray:

A00420 04 DE 17/7/2008 ANHA

© Sedo Treepoint GmbH – Sedomat 1800 - Sedomat 2500 - Sedomat 5500 – Operator manual ______________________________________ 71
Chapter 11: Programs

11.8.1 Algorithms
Algorithms can be used instead of constant parameter values. Algorithms are the result of a calculation with cer-
tain variables. The result of the calculation is used to execute the function. The formula and variables in the algo-
rithm are defined in the configuration. The configuration also defines for which function parameters a certain
algorithm may be used.

Algorithms can be used to:

• use the same program for different batches.
The result parameter will be batch related. For example: the weight of the process goods determines
the filling level. For example, the parameter LEVEL of the function FILL_MACHINE is a calculation with the
weight of the batch. This weight is entered as a batch parameter.
• use the same program for slightly different machines.
Machines of which the type data is equal, but the sub type data different can run the same program us-
ing algorithms. Algorithms are part of the sub type data.

Following values can be used to calculate an algorithm:

• Batch parameters: Are entered during the definition of a batch.
• Function parameters: From the actual function or as a result of previous functions.
• Numerical/logical info from the PLC: With these kind of values, the PLC can control the program execu-
tion.

Algorithms can use many operators. Some examples:

• Is equal to.
• Mathematic operators: +, -, x, ¸.
• Logical operators: AND, OR, NOT.
• Conditional operators: IF THEN.

Algorithms are displayed in red:

When a function containing an algorithm is activated, the algorithm is calculated and replaced by a value.

11.8.2 Question parameters

The value for a function parameter might be unknown during the programming without being calculated by an
algorithm. The programmer then can use question parameter. A question parameter forces the operator to enter
or select a function parameter when the function is executed.

Question parameters are displayed as six red question marks:

See 7.12, “Question parameters”.

Important remarks:
● Question parameters constrain the automatic progress of a program.
● Question parameters can result in wrong input from the operator.
● When a question parameter is used for a time value, the planning on SedoMaster cannot predict the total
A00420 04 EN 17/7/2008 ANHA

process time.

Chapter 11: Programs

11.9 Jumps
A jump moves the sequencer of a particular window to a label. A jump can be absolute or conditional. An abso-
lute jump always moves the sequencer to the label. A conditional jump only jumps when a certain condition is
true, else the next function is executed. A conditional jump compares an algorithm with a value. It is possible to
jump when the algorithm is equal to (function JUMP EQ), greater than (function JUMP GR) or lower than (JUMP
LT) the value.

A jump can be inserted in any window. A jump only moves the sequencer of that particular window.

An absolute jump only has the pa-

rameter LABEL. A conditional jump has
three parameters: the label to jump to,
an algorithm and a value.

In the example, there will be a jump

to the Label 01 (1) only when the al- 3
gorithm LEVEL DRY (2) is greater than
(3) LEVEL 80% (4). 1

2
4

A jump can only go to a label in the same window as the jump. A jump can also go to a label in a treat-
ment of the process, but still in the same window. When the label does not exist in the window, the
jump function will be ignored.

11.10 Special functions: overview

PROG-START Parameter: none
This function indicates the beginning of a process. The function is automatically put on line 1 when a new pro-
cess is created. When a program is started, this function starts the program sequencer and informs the PLC and
SedoMaster that the batch has started. The function is only used in processes.

PROG-END Parameter: none

This function indicates the end of a process. The function is automatically put on the last line when a new pro-
cess is created. The sequencer stops and PLC and SedoMaster are informed indicating that the program is fin-
ished. Parallel functions of the next batch that are already started, are not stopped. The function is only used
in processes.

OPERATORCALL Parameter: stop reason

This function is automatically put in all windows when inserted. It synchronizes all windows and halts the exe-
cution of the program when all sequencers arrive at this function. Then, the Operator call dialog box is dis-
played. See Operator manual, Running a program, In case of a operator call.

LOAD/UNLOAD Parameter: stop reason

This function works like an OPERATORCALL, but only jumps within the window where it is programmed. It is not
possible to execute additional programs.

LABEL-FUNCT. Parameter: label text

Use this function to give structure to programs, to synchronize between windows, to mark a program position
to jump to or to mark safe positions to put an interrupt.

JUMP Parameter: label text

The sequencer of the window is moved to the first corresponding label in the same window.

JUMP EQ (equal) Parameters: label text, algorithm, value

The sequencer of the window is moved to the first corresponding label in the same window when the result
of the given algorithm is equal to the given value.

JUMP GT (greater than) Parameters: label text, batch parameter, value

12.2 Inserting functions

12.2.1 New program line
To insert a new line number just before the line in the magnifier select Context Æ Insert. Now the function
located on the cursor moves to the line just below the magnifier, an empty line is created in the magnifier and
the Edit function dialog box is opened to edit a new function (see 12.3, “Edit function”).

12.2.2 Insert parallel function near empty main window

To insert a function in a parallel window, while no function is required in the main window, first select the paral-
lel window. Then select Context Æ Insert. A new line is inserted and the Edit function dialog box is opened to
edit a new function (see 12.3, “Edit function”).

12.2.3 Insert function on empty position

To insert a function on an empty position, i.e. without inserting a new line, position the cursor on the empty po-
sition. Then just select again the empty function field to edit it or select Context Æ Modify. The Edit function
dialog box is opened to edit the function (see 12.3, “Edit function”).

12.2.4 Changing a function

First position the cursor on the function, then just select again the function to edit it. The context menu-item
Modify is also used to edit an existing function. The Edit function dialog box is opened to edit a new function (see
12.3, “Edit function”).

12.3 Edit function

12.3.1 Edit function dialog box

This dialog box defines the data for the function, in case an existing function is modified or the default data
when a new function is created.

To modify or to create a new func-

tion, select the input field of Func-
tion group (1) and select a group.
Main functions can only be inserted
in the main window, parallel func- 1
tions only in parallel windows. Data
and special functions can be inserted 2
in all windows.
3
Then select a function name (2)
from the configured set of functions.
The list shows eighteen functions at
the time. Browse with page
up/page down buttons if more then
eighteen functions are available.

4 5
Define the function parameters (3).
Each parameter has a value (4) and
a type (5). The default type is
“Value”. To enter an algorithm or a
question parameter, first select an-
other type. For the type “value” and
“algorithm”, select or enter the

value.
Finally, select OK to close the Edit function dialog box. The Program edit view returns. When an existing func-
tion or empty location was edited, the program line with this function will be in the magnifier. When a new pro-

gram line was created, this new line will move to the line above the magnifier. The cursor always stays in the
same window from before selecting the Edit function dialog box.

12.3.2 Operator call

The only parameter of the special
function OPERATORCALL (1) is the
kind of stop (2).

Important.
Inserting an OPERATOR- 1
CALL on an empty window
or program line containing 2
function overwrites the
program line!

After selecting OK the function is

inserted in all windows of this line.:

12.3.3 Labels
Also labels need some extra attention. Labels are not automatically inserted in all windows. When a label is used
to synchronize windows, the programmer has to put manually the function LABEL-FUNCT. With the same parame-
ter on the windows that have to synchronize.

When an Operator call occurs, and

the operator selects Goto label, the
list shows the line number (1) and
the label parameter (2) of the exist-
ing labels in the program.
In case the same label parameter
has been used more than once in a
program, then the operator can se-
lect the label because of the line
numbers.
For a jump function (see 11.9,
“Jumps”), there is only a label re- 1
quired in the same window. 2

12.4 Special shortcuts and techniques

12.4.1 Shortcuts
To save time, the Sedomat features some shortcuts in the Program edit mode:

● To insert a new function in a line: Select the line above the magnified
area and draw into the magnified area (1). The Edit function dialog box
is displayed.
● To edit or insert a function in a field, just select twice the field.
● To mark a line, draw in the magnified area from the first window to the
last window (2).
● To mark also the next line(s) just use the arrow keys to browse down.
● To cut marked lines draw from the lower left window to the upper right
window (3).
● To copy marked lines draw from the lower right window to the upper
left window (4).
● To insert copied or cut lines draw in the magnified area from the last
window to the first window (5).
● To delete a function, draw from the line above the magnified area to
the line under the magnified area.

12.4.2 Delete
Mark the function to delete. When this is the only function on this program line, the entire program line is de-
leted and the lines below the magnifier are moved up one line.
Select Context Æ Delete.
This action can be undone by selecting Context Æ Undo.

12.4.3 Mark, cut, paste

This set of menu-items from the Context menu is used to copy and move one or more program lines inside the
same program or to other programs, even treatments and additional programs. Using these menu-items takes
less programming time and decreases the number of programming errors.

A copied part of a program can be used and adapted somewhere else.

First of all, the lines that have to be copied must be marked. Position the first line to be copied in the magnifier.
Select Context Æ Mark. This line will be marked and the next line comes in the magnifier.

Selecting the browsing keys (see 7.8, “Browsing”) selects or deselects by line, by page or all functions. When the
first selected line comes in the magnifier, it is also deselected, but the marking is still active.

To copy the selected lines in the temporary memory, select Context Æ Cut or Context Æ Copy. When the
menu-item “Cut” is used the lines are deleted from the program and the marking is removed. Select Context
and select Paste to bring them back. The lines are still in the temporary memory and can be pasted to every pro-
gram position (even in other programs), until other program lines are marked and copied in the temporary
memory.

12.4.4 Undo
A00420 04 DE 17/7/2008 ANHA

Selecting Context Æ Undo immediately after executing one of the actions from the Context menu (not Add
addition) undoes this last action.

12.5 Add addition

Only a selection of the available additional programs can be used for a process. After creating additional pro-
grams for a certain process, these additional programs must be linked with the process. See 11.4.2, “Additional
programs”. When the process is in the Program edit view, select Context Æ Add addition.

Select the white list (1) of the dialog box

Choose additions.

A multi-selection box (2) is opened.

Browse or enter the program number.
Mark the additional programs by selecting
them to link them to the process. A blue 1
frame (3) around the additional program
name marks the linked programs. Confirm
with to close the multi-selection box.

The linked additional programs are now

displayed in the dialog box Choose addi-
tons. Confirm with Execute to close the 2
dialog box.

When an Operator call occurs and the op-

erator selects ‘Execute addition’, then only
the linked additional programs will be 3
shown (see 7.10, “Operator call”).

The maximum number of additional pro-

grams that can be selected for a process is
16. When the programmer should try to
select more additional programs, the
message “Maximum number of ad-
ditions is selected!” is dis-
played.

12.6 Quit Program edit view

When the editing of a program is finished, quit the Program edit view by changing to another view, e.g. Program
view or select another program to edit. In both cases, the following dialog is displayed:

Select Yes to save the program.

Select No to quit without saving.
Select Cancel to stay in the Program edit view and
cancel the save program operation.

gram. To copy a program select Management Æ Programs.. Æ Copy program.

In the dialog box select the Program type (1).

Select the program to copy from (source) (2).
The next free program number is already suggested 1
(3), also the program name and program comment
are overtaken. Leave the suggested or select a new
program number (3), edit the program name (4) 2
and program comment (5).
When the entered program number is already used,
the number will automatically be replaced by the 3 4
next free number, to prevent overwriting an exist-
ing program. The suggested number, name and
5
comment can still be modified. Select Execute to
create the copy.
The new program will be of the same kind of the
original, i.e. a process, treatment or an additional
program.

deleted programs cannot be re-
trieved unless you have a backup
on an external memory device!
4
Confirm with Execute to delete and to
close the dialog box.

12.8 Hints to create an optimized program

First, enter the main window. The functions in the main window define the sequence of the program.
Then, enter the functions in the other windows. These functions will be executed in parallel and should not slow
down the main functions. Their execution time should be lower or equal to the execution time of the neighbour-
ing function in the main window. In this way, the most efficient program flow is obtained.
Program parallel functions in such way that:
1. The function in the main window does not have to wait for this parallel function.
2. The parallel function is not started too early, because holding the reached temperature is a waste of
energy.
Make it a habit to put data functions in the first lines of the program. This way, they will not be forgotten.
Empty program blocks in the main window are allowed when for example more than one function in parallel
with a single main function are needed.
Large programs can get a lot more readable when labels are used to separate parts of the program or when
treatments are used.

Chapter 13: Example program

13. Example program

13.1 From paperwork to structured program
Before a program can be entered, some preparation is required:
When using for temperature control applications: Draw a temperature curve and add the temperature, gradient,
holding time for each heating. Add comments for the adding of chemicals and color.
Make a table with the different program steps. Include all necessary information and descriptions like tempera-
ture, time, chemicals, color …
Think about which steps can be executed in parallel with the main process, and when they are allowed start.
Use treatments to structure the program having different sections of the process: preparation, process, finishing
(see 11.4.1, “Treatments”).

13.2 Example program

The example program used in this manual is created for illustrative and didactic purpose only. It should
not be used in practice. The set of functions is defined by the configuration and is particular for each
machine type. Refer to the machine constructor for your set of functions.

The example program is appropriate for a yarn dyeing machine. Programs for other machines are created in the
same way.

This is the temperature curve for the example program:

Following table lists the program step by step. Since the Sedomat offers parallel processing, it has been taken in
account that some functions can be processed simultaneously. Functions are already categorized as main func-
tions or as parallel functions. The text for the parallel functions describes when the function can be executed dur-
ing a function of the process. The corresponding function name and line number is also listed.

Below, we will discuss some interesting parts of the program. The line numbers and the names of the windows
are added for easy reference.

Remind that the set of functions used in this example is created for illustrative and didactic purpose only.

Sedomat 1800
For the Sedomat 1800 the same principle can be applied but only with one main function and one parallel func-
tion.

Sedomat 5500
For the Sedomat 5500 the same principle can be applied but with one main function and three or four parallel
functions.

13.4 Discussion of the dye program

13.4.1 Preparation
The function DYE MODE> in line 3 and PUMP> in line 4 are functions without acknowledgement, the next follow-
ing function will be executed right after them. So the functions FILL STOCK % and FILL EXP.% are executed at the
same time.
The function PUMP> on line 4 will set the flow reversal times for the pump when the yarn is loaded in the main
tank (line 4).

The function FILL EXP %> on line 5 will be executed right after PUMP>, because PUMP> is a data function without
acknowledgement. The side tank should be filled before the transfer to the main tank on line 6, and is therefore
put on line 4 in window 3.

While the Heating (line 7), the tanks are injected to the machine.

13.4.2 Synchronizing with labels

After the injection of the expansion tank in the main tank and the heating (line 7) a label is positioned to pre-
vent that the heating function in line 9 is started before all tanks are injected. We advise to put labels on all
windows.

13.4.3 Empty program blocks

There are some empty program blocks in window 1 and 2, and in the additional program because there are no
main functions to execute at these position. The additional program fills the stock tank (line 1) and injects this
tank in the main tank (line 2).

The first heating function (line 3) heats the main tank to 110°C, and holds this temperature for the time defined
by the operator. The holding time therefore is a question parameter (red question marks).

After the heating function on line 4, the additional program returns control to the process (line 5). The operator
call in the process (line 19) is re-executed.

Power 24V=

Connection on bottom, see no. 1 in drawing.

Apply power from an external 24VDC power supply. Current consumption: maximum 2A. We advise a separate
power supply. When using 24VDC from the machine, make sure that the voltage meets the required specifica-
tions: see 16.1.

Connect the Sedomat to a power source with earth.

A readily accessible disconnecting device must be incorporated in the fixed mains wiring, to disconnect
the Sedomat in emergency cases or by servicing.

Use a power cable with wires of at least 0.5mm².

17.3 Earth
Connection on backside, see no. 5 in drawing.
Make an earth connection (US: ground) from the Sedomat to the earth terminal in the machine’s control cabinet.
Make the earth wire as short as possible. Wire section: 1.5mm²… 2.5mm². Wire color: yellow/green (US: green).
The Sedomat has a threaded stud M4 with ring tongue for the wire. Use an appropriate tool for the ring tongue.

Connect earth before connecting power.

There should also be an earth connection (as short as possible) of the same section between each
PROFIBUS station and the same terminal in the machine’s control cabinet.

17.4 FIELDBUS
This is an option for the Sedomat 2500. Following description in only relevant if the Sedomat 2500 has
the PROFIBUS DP® option.
The Sedomat 1800 does not have this option.
The Sedomat 5500 always has a PROFIBUS DP interface.

RS 485 connection on downside, see no. 2 in drawing.

The Sedomat is a PROFIBUS DP® master according the Euro-
pean field bus standard EC 50170.

17.4.1 Bus structure

The total number of PROFIBUS stations (including the Sedomat) is limited to 124. A PROFIBUS network is divided
in bus segments of maximum 32 stations. Bus segments are connected to each other by repeaters. Repeaters are
also required in case the maximum bus segment length is reached (see 17.4.4). The limit of 32 stations also in-
cludes the repeater. The first and last station of each segment requires a terminator to avoid cable reflections.
The Sedomat is always the master.
Example bus structure:

17.4.2 Addresses
Each station has a unique address. The address ranges from 0 to 123. The Sedomat address is set in the configu-
ration. Most stations allow changing the address by setting DIP switches. New types of stations allow changing
the address via PROFIBUS (e.g. Sedo devices Profi16 and Profi32).

17.4.3 GSD-files
The bus structure for the Sedomat is saved in the PROFIBUS master using the configuration tool "SEDOconfig for
Windows". Each PROFIBUS station is delivered with a GSD-file. This file contains the characteristic communication
features of a PROFIBUS station. This data is required by the configuration tool to be able to integrate a station in
the bus configuration. The configuration data is sent from the master to the slave stations. Configuration and pa-
rameter settings of a slave is done by the project engineer and can be different for each project.

“SEDO_Config for Windows” contains the GSD-file for the Sedomat (SEDO5000.GSD) and for other Sedo‘s
PROFIBUS devices. Make sure you have the latest “SEDO_Config for Windows” version. For more information: con-
tact Sedo‘s technical support.

17.4.4 Bus cable

Use cable B1950231 (2x0.34mm² twisted pair).

Cable parameters
Characteristic impedance: 135Ω to 165 Ω at a frequency of 3...20MHz
Operating capacity: < 30 pF/m
Loop Resistance: ≤ 110 Ω /km
Core cross-section: ≥ 0.34 mm²

Maximum bus segment length

The specified cable parameters result in a maximum length of each bus segment for the respective data transfer
rate:

17.4.5 Bus connector

Sedo Treepoint delivers either a Phoenix or Beckhoff connector. In case of Phoenix, use the included documenta-
tion, else use the description below.

Part number

Connector B332890 serves to connect PROFIBUS stations on the

PROFIBUS. This connector is delivered with each Sedomat and
each Profi16 and Profi32.

Installation instructions

The connector contains an internal terminator (150 Ω) that can be Figure 1

activated by the slide switch in the connector (see Figure 1). Acti-
vate the terminator (ON) only for the first and last station of the
segment.

Stripping the bus cables

Strip the bus cable to the lengths given in the Figure 2.

Note: Only one bus cable leads to the first and last PROFIBUS sta-
tions.

Figure 2

Fitting the bus cable

The bus cable can be routed from above (Figure 3) or from the side (Figure 4) into the connector. Please follow
the steps given below when fitting the bus cable:

Open the connector housing by undoing the two housing screws 1.

Undo the two pull relief screws 2.
Connect the connecting wires to the corresponding terminals (in doing so, always assign the corresponding wire
pairs to one connection terminal, e.g. black wire of cable C1 and black wire of cable C2 is connected to both A-
sockets). To open the terminal contacts, press into the corresponding opening 3 from above with a screwdriver.
Press the two cables into the pull relief guide 4 and screw the two pull relief halves together (pay attention to
good screen contact).
Make sure that the slide switch for the terminators is in the correct position (see above).

17.4.6 Important remark

When adding a station to an existing installation, check that only the first and last stations have a terminator.
When more than two terminators are used at the cable ends, or when intermediate stations are terminated,
PROFIBUS communication can fail.

17.5 Profi16/32 input/output unit

See Profi16/32 manual.

17.5.1 Address setting

Important: Before the address setting can be done, the bus structure must be loaded into the Sedomat.

Each Profi16/32 leaves factory at address 126. Connecting all units without changing the address first will cause
addressing conflicts. Therefore, the address of each unit has to be changed. This is done via PROFIBUS using the
Sedomat:

• Apply 24VDC to the Profi16/32.

• Connect one unit with a PROFIBUS cable to the Sedomat (no
need to power off the Sedomat).
• On the Sedomat, select the management menu . From the
menu select Settings.., Set PROFIBUS address.
• Enter the “From” and the “To”-address and select Execute.
• Mark the address on the unit.
• Connect the next unit to PROFIBUS and repeat the procedure
until all units are done.

If you can not set the address refer to the Profi16/32 manual to see how the address is reset.

17.6 RS232

The PC with the configuration software (Sedo_Config for Windows) and PLC programming software (PLCPROG or
PLC Project) is connected to the Sedomat to send this data to the Sedomat. The cable connects COM1 of the PC
with the CONFIG connector of the Sedomat. In case your PC has no serial connection use a USB to serial adapter.

Note: Sedomat and PLC configuration data can also be transferred to the Sedomat via USB memory device.

The connector of the cable at PC-side is a nine pin female sub-D connector. The connector of the cable at the Se-
domat side is a nine pin female sub-D connector. The contacts of the connector must be gold-plated. The maxi-
mum cable for RS232 length is 15m.
A fully wired null modem cable has to be used.

18.5 Niveaumat
Select Management Æ Settings.. Æ Niveaumat
Niveaumat is a Sedomat tool to generate an accurate conversion table, which relates the liquid level of a linear
or not linear tank to a useful volume value (e.g. liters, percent). The PLC uses the converted value to get the cur-
rent tank level.
Note: A linear tank is a tank of which the volume is proportional to the liquid level. E.g. a cylindrical tank.

Use Niveaumat always when you require a meaningful volume value (liters, percent, ...) or as a linearization of
non-linear tanks.

100 100
75 75 the V-shaped area at the bottom of
50 the tank is not linear. 50 a linear tank contains a consider-
25 25 able amount of liquid.
0 0

The conversion table has to be created once for each tank by a calibration process.:

For a linear tank, this is done by filling the empty tank completely. The PLC reads the empty and full level of the
level sensor. A water counter is not needed.
For a not linear tank, this is done by filling the empty tank completely via a water counter connected to the PLC,
while the PLC measures the signal of the water counter.

The Sedomat calculates the conversion table and sends the results to the PLC software. After the calibration, the
water counter is no longer needed.

Remarks:
Niveaumat can be executed using the internal inputs of the Sedomat or the inputs of the Profi16/32 modules.
When using Profi16/32 modules two Niveaumats can be used for each module.
Note that there are different versions of the Sedomat having different numbers of internal inputs and outputs.
Each counter input and analog input can be used. The maximum number of Niveaumats that can be used is 4
with a PLCPROG PLC and 16 with PLC Project PLC.
The assignment of the inputs used for Niveaumat is done with “Sedo-Config for Windows”. Analog input and
counter input do not have to be part of the same unit.

Instructions

1. Make following calibration setup:

Connect the level sensor to the analog input of the PLC.

For the specifications of the PLC inputs and cable type to use, see 17.11, ”Analog inputs/Counter”.

2. Drain the tank. It must be empty.

3. Open the Niveaumat calibration dialog box. Select the Management Æ Settings.. ÆNiveaumat.

3

Enter the number of the analog connection in the Niveaumat field (1):
PLC’s have fixed I/O assignments for the analog connection of Niveaumats. PLCPROG:
1 = counter input on DW 1.1 and current input on DW 1.6
2 = counter input on DW 2.1 and current input on DW 2.6
3 = counter input on DW 3.1 and current input on DW 3.6
4 = counter input on DW 4.1 and current input on DW 4.6
For the Sedomat with IEC1131, any address can be assigned (Up to 16 inputs).
Select the type of Calibration (2):
Linear : The volume is proportional to the liquid level.
Not linear : The volume is not proportional to the liquid level.
Simulation : The system simulates pulses of the water counter.
Const. volume: The tank is filled with constant volumes.

Enter the Setpoint (3). This stands for the volume value of a full tank. The unit is set indirectly from the handling
of the value.
Select Start.
Fill the tank. The field Input should change while filling. It is the value of the level sensor. The field Pulse should
change while filling. When no water counter is connected, this value stays 0.
If no values change, stop filling and select Stop. Check the cabling, water counter, and level sensor. Restart the
procedure after finding and resolving the problem.
Do not overfill the tank: decrease the filling speed timely. When the tank is full, select Stop.
The conversion table is created by the measured data of the calibration process.
Select Execute. The conversion table is sent to the PLC and stored there.

After finishing the calibration, the Niveaumat is assigned the type of calibration and the setpoint.
The converted volume value is displayed in the Pulse field.
A00420 04 DE 17/7/2008 ANHA

Tip: If no water counter is available, it still is possible to calibrate. Simulate a signal with constant frequency for
the counter input by programming the PLC and apply a constant water pressure from the empty to full level.
Alternatively it is possible to use the type of calibration “simulation”.

Chapter 19: Coupling (Master/Slave operation)

19. Coupling (Master/Slave operation)

It is possible to couple machines (the machines must have the same characteristics) to run the same process si-
multaneously.
Working in coupled mode must be supported by the PLC program.
Warning
Only set machine in coupled mode when the machines are in safe condition. For setting machines into
coupled mode refer to qualified personnel only.

There are two kinds of coupling:

1. Basic coupling
A fix machine is always master, other machine(s) are always Slave.
2. Flexible coupling
Each of the machines can be Master or Slave.
To set up coupled machines, all machines must be within the same network. Also a machine address must be
assigned.
The Sedomat parameter 26 COUPLING must be set: 0 for basic coupling and 1-30 for flexible coupling (see 18.2
Sedomat parameters
For basic coupling, the machine addresses must be entered only on the Master. Then the setup of the basic cou-
pling is done.

For flexible coupling, the machine addresses must be entered in the same order on all controllers. That means
that the master address must be entered also as slave address.

To set up the flexible coupling, select on

the master Sedomat Management
Æ Coupling. Select the machine ad-
dresses that should work in coupled
mode. The Master address is always set
as on.
