Health and Wellness

The Wisconsin-based National Wellness Institute defines wellness as “an

active process of becoming aware of and making choices towards a more
successful existence.”

Attaining wellness is a lifelong process which needs a lot of personal

commitment, sound decision making and effort to practice healthy
behaviors not just physically and mentally but emotionally, socially and
spiritually as well.

What are the Dimensions of Health?

Physical Health
Physical health is very essential to achieve wellness in other health
dimensions. In order to achieve physical health, you must take good care of
yourself by doing regular physical activities or exercises, eat a balanced
diet, drink plenty of water and get enough sleep. You must also practice
proper hygiene and regularly visit the doctor for medical and dental check-
ups. Destructive habits must be avoided such as smoking, drinking alcoholic
drinks and taking dangerous drugs and harmful substances. These
destructive habits can cause unhealthy situations or circumstances.

Mental Health
The ability to make sound decisions and critical thinking is part of mental
health. These include determination of continuous personal growth,
willingness to effectively learn new things and use new information for
personal, family and career growth.

A mentally healthy person is open to new ideas and experiences that can
improve personal, family, and community life.

Emotional Health
Emotional health involves dealing with daily circumstances and feelings in
a positive way. It also involves recognizing your emotions and stress
management of everyday life.

To attain emotional health, you must have self-awareness and self-

acceptance to better manage the difficulties in life. Being able to control
your emotions means that you have a good mental health.

Social Health
Social health involves a comfortable and satisfying interaction with other
people. This means that you will be able to make and keep friends, and
easily work well along with others. . Social health enables you to establish
meaningful and satisfying relationships that enhance the quality of life.

Spiritual Health
Spiritual health involves healthy behaviors and actions that are in
accordance with one’s values and beliefs. Being spiritually healthy
enables you to reflect and make good decisions that deal with issues
of right and wrong. You are spiritually healthy if you are at peace
with yourself and you are living a meaningful and purposeful life.

Knot 5

The dimensions of health are related to each other. They are equally
important to attain holistic health. For instance, an individual who is
affected with his/her physical appearance will likewise be affected
emotionally as he/she may feel insecure. Worrying leads to anxiety which
affects his/her mental health. The relationship between family and friends
may be affected also when he/she tries to isolate himself/herself from
others.

A person with holistic health reects how he/she feels about life and his/her
ability to function productively.

Attaining holistic health is a lifelong process that needs sound decision

making, personal effort, commitment to practice healthy behaviors not just
physically and mentally but emotionally, socially, and spiritually as well.
