CONSTRUCTION METHODOLOGY ON BONDING NEW TO OLD CONCRETE In construction, there is always a time that happens unexpectedly the need to bond hardened concrete with fresh concrete pouring/overlay especially when circumstances are unexpected and beyond the control of the Contractor. Some circumstances are inadequate supply of concrete or sudden breakdown of machinery. This is where we ate attest of strategic and immediate solutions. Proper bonding is very important when fresh concrete is used to overlay an existing hardened concrete. This construction feature is usually encountered during concrete slab pouring. Proper bonding is guaranteed by considering precautions and proper approach. For adequate bonding, it is very important to prepare the surface of the hardened concrete adequately. Preparation of the surface usually involves roughening of the surface and removal of dirt on the existing concrete, Old concrete surface should be firm, clean and free from loosened particles. This can be done by using chipping hammers or wire brushing the surface. After this is done, the exposed concrete surface can be cleaned by using pressurized water, air or any other methods applicable. ‘After surface preparation, the need to apply properly bonding agents of the surface on the existing concrete in order to facilitate the bonding. Epoxy bonding agents or cementitious grout can be used or both agents can be applied. To execute the corrective measures, provide the angle key pattern of standard structural construction joint not perfectly to attain the S-pattern but strongly to emphasize the additional extra shear bar and attaining a pattern adequate to function and bonding of joint between old and new concrete.
