Chapter 1 Product Description

1 Product Description

The Loop-O9500R 7 FOM card is a high-speed module that can connect with the AM3440 series and
O9310-E1 using Loop proprietary FOM (Fiber Optical Modulator) interface. Each card has 7 FOM
interfaces. Each FOM interface supports up to 4 E1 aggregate channels. The 7 FOM card is E1 mode
configurable and supports Tributary Line 1+1 Protection. When protection enabled with 1+1, the
O9500R can support up to 14 ports of FOM.

2 Installation

2.1 Site Selection

The following list indicates a site selection guideline. Users need to follow this guideline to select a
proper installation site.

z Location of the Rack should be part of the central office equipment layout design. Considerations
should be given to entrance cable routing and -48 Vdc power.
z The installation site should have -48 Vdc power. An optional AC/DC power converter can be
used. Use only with Class 2 power source, -48 Vdc, 100 watts.

2.2 Mechanical Installation

The 7-port FOM card can be plugged into any of the high speed slots (slot 1~4) in the O9500R chassis.
The front panel is shown in the figure below:

Figure 2-1 7FOM Panel View

3
Chapter 2 Installation

2.3 Electrical Installation

All electrical connections are on the backplane. The electrical connections are made when the card is
firmly seated into a tributary slot in the Loop-O9500 chassis. 7 FOM cards are hot swappable.

2.4 Optical Installation

The 7 FOM card supports up to seven fiber connections.

To set up an optical line, a SFP module and an optical cable are required.

Figure 2-2 SFP module and Optical Cable

First, plug the SFP module into the FOM port you wish to setup.

3.2 Initial Setup and Card Registration

Prior to setting up an FOM interface card, you must first set up the main O9500R device. Full
instructions for doing so are found in the O9500R User’s Manual. After that setup is complete, go to
the main Controller Menu for the O9500R device. A sample screen is shown below.

You must register your 7FOM cards with the O9500R device.

5.6 Loopback & Diagnostics Setup

The O9500R 7 FOM card is able to connect to remote devices such as O9500R, AM3440 or O9310
with a remote 7FOM card. The system supports FOM loopback and E1 loopback for self-testing.

FOM Loopback:
The outgoing optical signal is looped back through the optical line. All its channels are looped back to
the receiver path. This loopback test is activated by the test command.

E1 Loopback:
The incoming E1 signal is loopback to the outgoing E1 signal, or vise versa. This loopback is used to
isolate the local equipment from a troubled E1 signal. E1 loopback test can be activated from the
terminal.

FOM P1~P7 Power Down ON, OFF OFF
FOM P1~P7 Manual Restart Start, OFF OFF
¾ How to Set up:
ALS Enable-
The 7 FOM card supports ALS (Auto Laser Shutdown) function. When ALS enable is set as “OFF”, the
laser function will remain active even if the optical line is disconnected (LOS alarm).

If you wish to disable the ALS function, select “ON” for ALS enable. The laser function will then shut
(shuts/will shut) down when an optical line is disconnected. After the optical line is re-connected, the
laser function will not restart automatically. To restart the laser function, you have to choose “START”
for FOM port (P1~P7) manual restart. You can also key in the automatic restart time you wish in the
“Pulse repetition time for automatic restart” section.
Power Down-
If you wish to disable the laser function for a particular FOM port with a connected optical line, select
“ON” for FOM port (P1~P7) power down. The port will then stop sending Tx.
