1. The plastic polythene is manufactured from a crude oil fraction X. The process is summarised
in the flow chart below.

Small
hydrocarbons Other products

Crude oil fraction X

Ethene Polythene

Process (i)
Process (ii)

(a) What is the name of the crude oil fraction X? (1 mark)

Naphtha

(b) Name the process (i) as shown in the flow chart. State the TWO necessary conditions for
process (i). (3 marks)
First heat to very high temperature in the absence of air.the hydrocarbon in naphtha are
broken down to form smaller hydrocarbon molecule with fewer carbon atoms.

(c) Name the process (ii) as shown in the flow chart. (1 mark)
Polymerisation

(d) Write down TWO uses of polythene. (2 marks)

Shopping bags and food warp

2. Plastics are common substitutes for natural materials. In each of the following cases, suggest
ONE advantage of using plastic over the other material to make the item. (4 marks)
(a) Plastic bottle vs. glass bottle
Plastic bottle is stronger and tough, glass bottle easy to breaks but the plastic bottle will
not breaks

(b) Plastic food box vs. metal food box

Plastic food box is good insulators of heat.Metal food box is good conductors of heat

(c) Plastic-made water bucket vs. metal-made water bucket

Plastic made water bucket had relatively low densities ,meatal made water bucket had
relatively high densities

(d) Plastic toy vs. wooden toy

Plastic toy is resistant to corrosion by acid or alkalis .wooden toy will easy corrosion by
acid and alkalis

3. The disposal of plastic causes many environmental problems.

(a) Plastic should not be burnt in incinerators. Briefly explain this. (1 mark)
Because a plastic had harmful substances inside the product, when burn the plastic, will
produce poisonous and carcinogenic substances when they burn

(b) Burying plastic waste in landfills causes long-term effects to the land as plastic cannot be
decomposed by micro-organisms.

(i) State the meaning of ‘decompose’. Briefly explain why it is important for the waste
in the landfills to get decomposed. (2 marks)
Broken down, plastics can not decompose by micro-organisms in the soil, they

accumulate in landfills for many years.

(ii) Scientists have invented TWO types of plastic which are degradable. What are they?
Under what conditions can they be decomposed respectively? (4 marks)
