REFLECTION PAPER

Every time there are changes or developments happening in the world, the school curricula are affected.
In order to be relevant, we need to change, a change for the better. And these said changes can be seen
through effective implementation.

The lesson we discussed explores the nature and scope of curriculum implementation. In a nutshell,
curriculum implementation means “teaching” what has been written in the lesson plan. Implementing
means using the plan as a guide to engage with the learners in the teaching-learning process with the
end in view that learning has occurred and learning outcomes have been achieved. It involved the
different strategies of teaching with the support instructional materials to go with the strategy.

Apart from it, Module 4 allows us to categorize the changes made in the curriculum. It drives me to
embrace its concepts of innovation, development, renewal, and improvement. Moreover, the lesson
elaborates on the different changes happening in the curriculum at present. McNeil in 1990 categorized
curriculum changes into five (5): substitution, alternation, restructuring, perturbation, and value
orientation. Substitution is about replacing the current curriculum with a new one. Alternation
introduces minor changes or modifications of the current one. On the other hand, restructuring
introduces major changes or modifications to the current curriculum. The fourth one is perturbation or
the disruptive changes that happen within a fairly short time. Lastly, value orientation that responds to
shifts in emphasis within the vision/mission of the school. However, regardless of the kind of change in
curriculum and implementation, the process of change contains three important elements ─
developmental, participatory, and supportive.

This lesson emphasizes that as future teachers, we need to be flexible and versatile. We must
acknowledge changing the curriculum from time to time because time flies with society’s values change
and technology shifts. Every child's interest is shifting because of the influence of its environment and
society. The curriculum should be changed to meet the different needs that we have now. Hence,
change is inevitable in curriculum development.
