Exercise #3

The Electron Corp manufactures two electrical products: aircons and large fans.
The assembly process for each is similar in that both require a certain amount of
wiring and drilling. Each aircon takes 3 hours of wiring and 2 hours of drilling. Each
fan must go through 2 hours of wiring and an hour of drilling. During the next
production period, 240 hours of wiring time are available and up to 140 hours of
drilling time may be used. In addition, management decides that to ensure an
adequate supply of aircons for a contract, at least 20 aircons should be
manufactured. And because of an oversupply of fans in the preceding period,
management also insists that no more than 80 fans be produced during this
production period. Each aircon sold yields a profit of $25. Each fan assembled may
be sold for a $15 profit. Using LP, determine what combination of aircons and fans
yields the highest profits.

GIVEN:
Wiring Drilling Profit
Aircon (X) 3 2 $25
Large 2 1 $15
Fans(Y)
Avail. Time 240 140

1. Write the objective function: 25x + 15y

2. What are the constraints?

X >= 20
Y<=80
3x + 2y <= 240
2x + 1y <= 140
3. What is the non-negativity constraint? X, Y >=0

Blue: Drilling
Red: Wiring

4. What are the extreme points and their corresponding costs? 25x + 15y
Points Coordinates Objective function
A (0,0) 25(0) + 15 (0) = $0
B (0,120) 25(0) + 15(120) = $1,800
C (36,66) 25(36) + 15(66) = $1,890
D (70,0) 25(70) + 15(0) = $1,750

5. How many courses should be offered?

X = 36
Y = 66

6. Constraints Available Required Slack

Wiring 240 3(36) + 2(66) = 240 0
Drilling 140 2(36) + 1(66) = 138 2
X >=20 36 16
Y <=80 66 14

In no more than 5 sentences, explain to your boss what you have just computed.

Based from the calculation above, the organization can return the most elevated benefit on the off
chance that it utilizes the mix of gathered 36 Aircons and 66 Fans.
