The Three
Billy Goats Gruff

ELT Abridgement by Damien Tunnacliffe

and Phoenix Publishing Services

75
There were once three billy goats: Baby Billy Goat,
Little Billy Goat and Big Billy Goat.
In winter they lived in a warm barn and ate dry
hay all day long. There was no fresh grass.
Little Billy Goat looked out of the window. ‘Spring
will come soon,’ he said. ‘I want to eat fresh grass.’

76
Spring came and soon it was
warm. The grass started to
grow green and fresh.
The farmer came and
opened the door.
‘You can go out now,’ he
said to them.
They ran up the mountain
path. Up, up they ran to
the meadows. There the
grass was sweet.

Baby Billy Goat ran quickly.

‘I’ll be at the meadows first,’ he thought. ‘I always like to be first.’
Soon he came to an old bridge.
He stopped. He looked at the bridge and the meadow on the other side.
‘Mmm,’ he thought. ‘Fresh, green grass. I’m very hungry. I’ll run across
the bridge and go into the meadow.’

77
But an ugly troll
lived under the
bridge.
‘This is my
bridge,’ he said
to himself.
‘Nobody can
cross this bridge
or I will eat
them for my
dinner!’
The farmers were afraid and never crossed
the bridge.
But Baby Billy Goat didn’t remember the
troll. He started to walk across the bridge.
His only thought was the fresh, green grass.

Suddenly the troll jumped up! ‘Who’s crossing my bridge?’ he cried in

an ugly voice.
Baby Billy Goat was very frightened. ‘I – I – I want to ... to ... to eat
the sweet grass in the meadow,’ he said very quietly.
‘I’m going to eat you, you silly little goat,’ roared the troll.
‘Oh no! Pl – pl – please
don’t eat me. I’m only a
very little baby goat. Wait a
few minutes and my
brother, Little Billy Goat,
will come ... He’ll be nicer
to eat than me!’

78
The troll stopped. ‘Perhaps
he’s right,’ he thought.
‘All right,’ he said to Baby
Billy Goat. ‘You can go. I’ll
wait for your bigger brother.’
Baby Billy Goat ran across
the bridge into the meadow.
The grass was very sweet.

Soon after, Little Billy

Goat came to the bridge.
He saw the fresh, green
grass on the other side.
‘I’m so hungry,’ he thought.
And he began to cross the
bridge.

79
The troll jumped up again. He was angry now – and hungry.
‘Who’s crossing my bridge?’ he roared.
Little Billy Goat looked up. He was very frightened.
‘I want to eat the sweet grass in the meadow,’ he said.
‘Ha! You’re not going to eat the grass in the meadow.
I’m going to eat you!’
‘Oh, please don’t eat me. You see I’m really thin after the winter in
the barn. But my big brother ... he’s really big and he will be much nicer
to eat.’

80
The troll thought again.
‘Perhaps you’re right,’ he
said. ‘I’ll wait for your big
brother. Then I’ll have a
really big meal! I’m so
hungry!’
Little Billy Goat ran
away quickly. He was very
happy.

A few seconds later, Big Billy Goat came to the bridge. He was very
strong and he had two huge horns on his head. He remembered the
troll but he was not afraid.
He began to cross the bridge.

81
Up jumped the troll again.
This time he was very angry
and hungry. He forgot to say
‘Who’s crossing my bridge?’
His eyes were angry and he
showed his huge teeth. He
ran at Big Billy Goat.
‘I’m going to eat you. I’m
going to eat you,’ he roared.
‘No, you’re not going to eat
me,’ Big Billy Goat said.
‘I’m not afraid of you. I’m
strong. You’ll see.’ He put his
head down and he showed
his huge horns and ...
... he charged. His huge
horns hit the troll. Thwack!
‘Aaagh!’ cried the troll.
The huge horns lifted the
troll up, up in the air ...

82
Up, up in the air went
the troll and over the
side of the bridge.
Down, down he came
with a huge ‘splosh!’
into the water. The
river carried him away
and they never saw
him again.

Big Billy Goat went

across the bridge.
‘Nice grass, huh?’ he
said to his two
brothers.
They didn’t answer.
Their mouths were full
of sweet grass. And
they all just ate and
ate and ate.
