What’s New
COVID 19 and Dance

The COVID-19 pandemic had a significant impact on the performing arts,

mirroring its impacts across all arts sectors. Due to physical distancing requirements
and closure of the physical venues, curtailing not only public performances but also
rehearsals, many performing arts institutions attempted to adapt by offering new (or
newly expanded) digital services. World Health Organization (WHO) and Department
of Health (DOH). In particular, this resulted in the free online streaming of previously
recorded performances of many companies.

Interestingly and increasingly, netizens (citizens of the internet), turned their dancing
skills into social media like Facebook, Tiktok, Youtube, etc. all because of the
community quarantine and lockdown imposed by the government. Their participation
is purely for entertainment but unconsciously they are doing physical activities.

What is It
Participation in an organized dance event to address
health issues or concerns

As you become more involved in physical activities, you can elevate your
participation by joining events that promote health and fitness as well as address
health issues like diabetes, obesity, nutrition, smoking, and many more. By joining
events like these, you can learn more about these health concerns, what is being done
to handle these concerns, and at the same time, you also get to increase your physical
activity.

A. School events. These extra-curricular events of schools let learners

participate in dance events. Classroom performance, school programs like
intramurals, cheer dance competitions, promenade, nutrition month, and
the like are examples of school programs that exposes learners to participate
in dancing.
B. Dance events and competitions - These events focus on dance as the main
activity, whether as competition (e.g. street dance, dance sport) or as

recreation (e.g. aerobic dance marathons, Zumba events). Organizers are

private companies and individual sponsorships who promotes the events
through flyers and media outlets.
C. Barangay, municipal, provincial dance parade or festival. These events focus
on celebrating a specific festival whether religious in nature or economic.
Mostly the organizers come from the local government unit.

3
D. Traditional celebrations. Family gathering, wedding, barangay social
dancing are some of the traditions that the learners may experience
depending on the culture of the community.

Participation in an organized events requires the participant to fill-up necessary

information, sign a waiver, sometimes with registration fee, and be oriented on the
benefits of the dance event. These events are mostly voluntary in nature.

What’s More

‘Tala sa Taal’ dance for a cause a hit

By: Nikka G. Valenzuela - Reporter / @NikkaINQ Philippine Daily Inquirer / 05:36 AM
January 19, 2020
MANILA, Philippines — The idea was irresistible: Show off your dance moves, be part
of a viral craze, and donate to Taal evacuees.
So it came as no surprise when hundreds of men, women and children trooped to
Rizal Park on Saturday to dance to the insanely popular “Tala” song by pop star Sarah
Geronimo to raise funds for families displaced by the eruption of Taal Volcano.
For P100, participants and Geronimo fans who call themselves Popsters, could join
the Tala for Taal flash mob at Rizal Park, with the money donated to the chosen
charity, the Philippine Red Cross.
“We wanted to make Tala more meaningful,” said Popsters president Barrie Juanico.
The response was overwhelming, Juanico said, with more than 600 people registering
for the event, and pledges of P1000 and P5000 swelling the final donation to P60,000,
according to organizers.
The 2016 Geronimo song, whose recent resurgence pushed it into the Billboard World
Digital Song sales chart, became popular when a number of Tiktok and Twitter users
uploaded videos of themselves dancing to it.
But “Tala” became viral when a clip sometimes described as “Tala resistance” was
posted on social media. The clip showed a group of young people who wanted to play
volleyball on the front yard of a certain “Aling Nelia.” When the woman called the cops
on them, the group defiantly danced to the “Tala” song. The song has since become
an Internet staple.
Among those who joined the Luneta dancefest was Claud Segfried Ramos, who wore a
pink sequinned jacket to the event, and friends Azhley Isarena, 11, Fiona Tan, 12 and
Jadidah Lao, 10, whose parents brought them to the event.
Zumba seniors Edna Abileda, 65, and Bising Cebrano, 69, came all the way from Rizal,
while dance instructor Lance Daniele Turallo, 18, proved once more that “Dance is
universal, regardless of race, age, or gender.”
