Radiation Pattern – Field Regions

Outline
• Radiation Pattern - Types

• Near Field Region

• Far Field Region

Radiation Pattern
• A radiation pattern is a graphical representation of field strengths or
power densities at various angular positions relative to the antenna
i.e. radiation properties of antenna like amplitude, phase,
polarization, etc are shown as function of spherical co-ordinates.

• Polar Pattern (2D & 3D)

• Linear Radiation Pattern

Field Regions
• The radiation field that is close to the antenna is not same as the
radiation field at a greater distance. The field regions are classified
as

• Near Field
• Reactive Near Field
• Radiating Near Field (Fresnel)
• Far Field (Fraunhofer)
