Freshwater Fish culture

Salinity Levels of Different Waters

Freshwater Fish culture

Aquaculture

Aquaculture is the farming of fish, crustaceans,

molluscs, aquatic plants, algae, and other aquatic
organisms. Aquaculture involves cultivating
freshwater and saltwater populations under
controlled conditions.
Freshwater Fish culture

Some examples of aquaculture include raising

catfish and tilapia in freshwater ponds and farming

salmon in net-pens set out in a bay. Fish farming is

a common kind of aquaculture.

Freshwater Fish culture
Aquaculture is used for

 Producing seafood for human consumption.

 Enhancing wild fish, shellfish, and plant stocks for harvest.

 Restoring threatened and endangered aquatic species.

 Rebuilding ecologically-important shellfish habitat.

 Providing fish for aquariums.

Freshwater Fish culture
Difference between aquaculture and Psciculture
Aquaculture: it is the farming of freshwater and
saltwater organisms such as finfish, mollusks,
crustaceans and aquatic plants.

Psciculture: Fish farming is the principal form

of aquaculture.
Freshwater Fish culture
Aquaponics

Aquaponics is a system for farming fish and plants

together in a mutually beneficial cycle.

Fish produce wastes that turn into nitrates and ammonia.

As the plants suck up these nutrients, they purify the water,
which is good for the fish.
Freshwater Fish culture
Aquaponics

Many cultures have made use of this cycle to grow

better crops and nurture the fish as an additional
food source. Rice paddies in the China and
Thailand have used Aquaponics techniques for
years.

Indian Major Carp Species.

 Rohu (Labeo rohita)

 Thaila (Catla catla)

 Mori or Morakhi (Cirrhinus mrigala)

Rohu (Labeo rohita)
The Rohu has a spindle-shaped body. Its body colour is blackish on
the dorsal side and silvery on the ventro-lateral sides.
Freshwater Fish culture
Thaila (Catla catla)

Dorsal side of body is bluish and silvery on the side.

Mori or Morakhi (Cirrhinus mrigala)

One pair of barbells present. Color of the body is silvery,

dark gray along the back.

Type of fish culture on the base of feeding

1. Extensive fish culture

2. Intensive fish culture

3. Semi-intensive fish culture

4. Integrated fish culture

Freshwater Fish culture
Type of fish culture on the base of fish species

1. Monoculture

2. Polyculture

3. Composite culture
Freshwater Fish culture
Extensive fish culture
The extensive fish farming system is the least
managed form of fish farming, in which little care
is taken. No supplemental feeding or fertilization is
provided. Fish depends only on natural foods. This
system results in minimum income.
Freshwater Fish culture
Intensive fish culture
An intensive fish farming system is the well-managed form of fish
farming, in which fish are fed wholly formulated feed. Proper
management is undertaken to control water quality by use of
aerators and nutrition by use of highly nutritious feed.

Although the cost of investment is high, the return from the yield of
fish exceeds to ensure the profit.
Freshwater Fish culture
Semi-intensive fish culture

Semi-intensive fish culture system is more

prevalent. In this system, care is taken to develop
natural foods by fertilization along with
supplemental feeding.
Freshwater Fish culture
Integrated fish culture
In the fish integrated agriculture system, fish culture is
integrated with agricultural crops such as rice and also
dairy farming.

The fish species such as Common carp and Tilapia are

most suitable for culture in rice fields.
