SO, WHO NEEDS PEOPLE?
People have always seen themselves as social animals, with living together as the norm, but increasing
numbers are settling down as singles. Why is this happening?
It’s often presented as indicating the undesirable (26) _______ of society but, actually, the reality is more
interesting and less worrying. One reason more people opt for the single life is they can afford it but since
we are able to do many things (27) _____ we decide not to do, this financial answer is just one part of the
explanation. (28) ______ is the communication and technological revolution, which allows people to take
part in social events, when they’re living alone.
(29) ______ a key factor seems to be that today, young people define living alone in a positive way, as a
(30) ______ of success. They see it as a way to invest time in developing themselves personally and
professionally. This means that the whole social framework is being transformed, changing not only how
we understand ourselves and our relationships but also the way we build places to live and promote
economic growth.

Having just watched the whole of Channel 8’s TV series Tomorrow’s Homes, I’ve been wondering
about how anyone can predict the future of domestic life. You’d imagine that if you knew what architects
and technology companies were developing now to make life easier, more exciting and more beautiful,
you’d have a pretty good idea of what to expect in tomorrow’s homes. In reality, it’s more complicated,
and just as much about what we’ll choose to hang on to from today’s – the things that are ‘future-proof’.
In the 1950s, people thought that in the twenty-first century household tasks would be done by labour-
saving devices or robots – with food pills for dinner. Yet people still wash up and cook, even though the
technology exists that makes neither of these tasks necessary.
Tomorrow’s Homes, however, dared to make predictions which it turned into reality using an average
home belonging to a family called the Forseys. Four miles of cable were installed in the house so that all
the electrics, from lights to the fridge, could be controlled via the internet, and various other devices and
gadgets were introduced in addition to this. The family were then filmed as they got used to their new
home life. Programme presenter Harry Thwaites is also a consultant who spends his work life imagining
the future, so testing out his ideas for the programme was a fascinating experiment for him. His approach
was to use technology that was not totally brand new, but had only recently become more affordable.
CCTV cameras for security have been around for years, for example, but they are no longer only an option
for the mega-rich.
The Forsey family consists of a husband and wife with four children and two grandchildren. They
appear to be very natural and ordinary on the programme, and it was always interesting to see how they
reacted to the technology they were testing. One example that sticks in the mind is when Janine, the
mother, enters her reconstructed, all-white home (after successfully unlocking her new front door by using
her thumb print as a key), and she immediately bursts into tears – quite understandably it has to be said.

A short while later, her husband Ben gets locked out because the skin on his thumb is too rough. As
the series progresses, however, they slowly come to accept the technology, and even start to believe it
could have some value in their lives.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the
correct answer to each of the questions from 36 to 42
Travelling around Thailand in the 1990s, William Janssen was impressed with the basic rooftop solar
heating systems that were on many homes, where energy from the sun was absorbed by a plate and then
used to heat water for the home. Two decades later Janssen developed that basic idea he saw in south-east
Asia into a portable device that uses the power from the sun to purify water.
The Desolenator operates as a mobile desalination unit that can take water from different places, such
as the sea, rivers, boreholes, and rain, and purify it for human consumption. It is particularly valuable in
regions where natural groundwater reserves have been polluted, or where seawater is the only water source
available. Janssen saw that there was a need for a sustainable way to clean water for both the developing
and the developed countries when he moved to the United Arab Emirates and saw large-scale water
processing.
The Desolenator can produce 15 liters of drinking water per day, enough to sustain a family for cooking
and drinking. Its main selling point is that unlike standard desalination techniques, it doesn’t require a
generated power supply: just sunlight. It measures 120 cm by 90 cm, and it easy to transport, thanks to its
two wheels. Water enters through a pipe and flows as a thin film between a sheet of double glazing and
the surface of a solar panel, where it is heated by the sun. the warm water flows into a small boiler (heated
by a solar-powered battery) where it is converted to steam. When the steam cools, it becomes distilled

water. The device has a very simple filter to trap particles, and this can easily be shaken to remove them.
There are two tubes for liquid coming out: one for the waste – salt from seawater, fluoride, etc. – and
another for the distilled water. The performance of the unit is shown on an LCD screen and transmitted
to the company which provides services when necessary.
A recent analysis found that at least two-thirds of the world’s population lives with severe water scarcity
for at least a month every year. Janssen says that by 2030 half of the world’s population will be living
with water stress – where the demand exceeds the supply over a certain period of time. ‘It is really
important that a sustainable solution is brought to the market that is able to help these people,’ he says.
Many countries ‘don’t have the money for desalination plants, which are very expensive to build. They
don’t have the money to operate them, they are very maintenance intensive, and they don’t have the money
to buy the diesel to run the desalination plants, so it is a really bad situation.’
The device is aimed at a wide variety of users – from homeowners in the developing world who do
not have a constant supply of water to people living off the grid in rural parts of the US. The first
commercial versions of the Desolenator are expected to be in operation in India early next year, after field
tests are carried out. The market for the self-sufficient devices in developing countries is twofold – those
who cannot afford the money for the device outright and pay through microfinance, and middle-income
homes that can lease their own equipment. ‘People in India don’t pay for a fridge outright; they pay for it
over six months. They would put the Desolenator on their roof and hook it up to their municipal supply
and they would get very reliable drinking water on a daily basis,’ Janssen says. In the developed world, it
is aimed at niche markets where tap water is unavailable – for camping, on boats, or for the military, for
instance.
