4. What are some uses of spices for the Europeans? (10 points)
Europeans used spices not only to enhance the flavor of food, but also for
medication, perfumery, preservatives, and ointment.

5. How could Portugal become successful in dominating the spice trade? (10 points)
Portugal was the pioneer in finding the road to the spice producers of the Far East
Asia (East Asia and Southeast Asia).

6. Why did a war between Ternate and Tidore happened? (10 points)
As a larger kingdom, Spain tried hard to win control of the trade. That caused tension
between the Portuguese and Spanish empires. In some cases, the tensions caused
serious conflict or even war. For example, the war between Ternate and Tidore,
