Course Description
 This course is the first in a two-course sequence. It is taught with a
focus on financial accounting practices and techniques. This course
focuses on the nature of accounting, and how decision makers use
accounting information. Students are introduced to the use of
accounting information to describe the economic activities of a
business. The goal is to equip students with tools and knowledge that
will be applicable throughout their professional careers.

Prerequisite
 INSS 141 and MATH 113 with a grade of C or better is required. If you
have not successfully completed the course, you will be
administratively withdrawn.

Part 2: Course Objectives/Learning Outcomes


Upon completion of this class, each student should be able to:
1. Explain the purpose of financial reporting, the elements of the financial
statements, and the interrelated fundamental accounting assumptions
and principles.
2. Identify components of each of the four basic financial statements and
explain how it is used by investors, creditors, regulators and
managers.
3. Identify and demonstrate how internal controls are used to manage
and control the firm’s resources and risk.
4. Identify and explain issues related to the acquisition, valuation and
disposal of assets, liabilities and stockholders’ equity.
5. Identify the ethical consequences that’s integral in financial reporting
and be able to apply strategies for addressing them.
6. Communicate effectively about these topics in writing and orally.

Learning Outcomes:
Upon completion of this class, each student should be able to:
1. Demonstrate an understanding of the accounting environment and of
the underlying principles and concepts of accounting and financial
reporting (knowledge).
2. Apply these accounting and reporting principles and concepts in
situations that simulate business and accounting (application).
3. Demonstrate familiarity with ethical responsibilities of the accounting
profession (ethics).
4. Use information technology (e.g. word processing, presentation,
database and spreadsheet software, the internet) to solve business
and accounting problems and facilitate decision making (IT skills).

5. Use library and internet resources for writing research reports
(communication skills).
6. Clearly express oneself orally and in writing (communication skills).

Part 4: Grading Policy


Graded Course Activities
Late Work Policy
Be sure to pay close attention to deadlines—there will be no makeup
assignments or quizzes, or late work accepted without a serious and
compelling reason and instructor approval.

Viewing Grades in Canvas


Points you receive for graded activities will be posted to the Canvas
Grade Book. Click on Grades on the course menu, or from your
Dashboard.

Your instructor will update the online grades each time a grading
session has been completed—typically within 48 hours following the
completion of an activity. You will see a visual indication of new grades
posted on your Canvas Dashboard, click the Grades button.

Final grades assigned for this course will be based on the percentage of total
points earned and are assigned as follows:

Exam Policy:
There will be TWO exams given during the semester. Many of the questions
will require computations, so you should have a reliable calculator with you
for the examinations and for every class meeting. Multi-function devices such
as Blackberry, cell phones, or any other smart device that also operate as
calculators are SHOULD NOT be used.
Students should ensure that they have the appropriate technology to enable
them fully to participate in the course.
Emergency situations leading to missed exams will be addressed individually
upon receipt of appropriate documentation.

Part 5: Course Policies


Participation
Students are expected to participate in all online activities as listed on
the course calendar. Discussion board participation is worth 30 points
each.

The instructor will provide feedback where necessary on students’


comments. This will be a means for evaluating students’ participation
in the course.

Build Rapport
If you find that you have any trouble keeping up with assignments or
other aspects of the course, make sure you let your instructor know as
early as possible. As you will find, building rapport and effective
relationships are key to becoming an effective professional. Make sure
that you are proactive in informing your instructor when difficulties
arise during the semester so that we can help you find a solution.

Complete Assignments
All assignments for this course will be submitted electronically through
Canvas unless otherwise instructed. Assignments must be submitted
by the given deadline or special permission must be requested from
instructor before the due date. Extensions will not be given beyond the
next assignment except under extreme circumstances.

All discussion assignments must be completed by the assignment due


date and time. Late or missing discussion assignments will impact your
grade.

My Feedback Policy
Homework assignments will be completed through Connect. These
assignments are auto graded. Therefore, students will receive
feedback immediately a completed assignment is submitted. No
additional feedback will be provided by the instructor for auto-graded
assignments.

For assignments that require a written submission, feedback will be


provided within 7 days after the due date. Grading will begin after the
due date. Therefore, submissions ahead of the due date will be due for
grading after the due date.

Understand When You May Drop This Course


It is the student’s responsibility to understand when they need to
consider dropping a course. Refer to the Morgan State Course
Schedule on the Academic Calendar for dates and deadlines for
registration.

According to the MSU academic calendar, the add/drop period for


Summer 2020 ends on Wednesday, June 3, 2020. Monday, June 15,
2020 is the last day to drop the course with a grade of "W." It is the
student’s responsibility to verify these dates in the academic
calendar and take appropriate action when necessary.

After this period, a serious and compelling reason is required to drop


from the course. Serious and compelling reasons includes: (1)
documented and significant change in work hours, leaving student
unable to participate, or (2) documented and severe physical/mental
illness/injury to the student or student’s family.

Incomplete Policy
Under emergency/special circumstances, students may petition for an
incomplete grade. An incomplete will only be assigned if a student
completes all course assessments with the exception of the final exam.
All incomplete course assignments must be completed within the next
semester of enrollment.
