Product Description
Combination Fire / Smoke dampers provide an automatic means of localizing areas of smoke and or fire in
ventilation systems that is greatly contribute to the safety of life and property in the early stage of fire. It prevents
the spread of fire and or smoke through ventilation ductworks or wall openings. These type of dampers offer an
effective fire or smoke barrier maintaining the integrity in a fire situation and it is combined with low leakage
characteristic for smoke management. It is suitable for installation in sheet metal ductworks, openings in walls or
floor slabs made from concrete, bricks and in lightweight partition walls.
"SAFID" introducing "ERL" Thermoelectric Tripping Device (heat sensor) to replace the existing high torque spring
/ fusible link fire closure mechanism in all Combination Fire & Smoke dampers and blade type Fire dampers. The
"ERL" is thermally responsive bimetal disc / sensor that open and close the electrical contacts at a specific factory
calibrated temperature setting. The "ERL" is available in fixed temperature setting at 165°F (74 °C) only. The "ERL"
requires factory installation and wiring together with the qualified actuator to meet "UL" requirements.
Dampers which allow remote resetting of the damper from a remote location are dangerous. All damper moving
parts must be inspected and cycled at every six months and in accordance with "NFPA90A & 92A" latest edition
and local codes.

Safety notes
• The actuator is not allowed to be used outside the specified field of application, especially in
! aircraft or in any other airborne means of transport.
• Caution: Power supply voltage!
• The actuator is adapted and mounted to the fire and smoke damper by the damper manufac-
turer. For this reason, the actuator is only supplied direct to safety damper manufacturers.
The manufacturer then bears full responsibility for the proper functioning of the damper.
Product features
Mode of operation The actuator moves the damper to its normal working position while tensioning the return spring
at the same time. If the power supply is interrupted, the energy stored in the spring moves the
damper back to its safe position.
Signalling Two microswitches with fixed settings are installed in the actuator for indicating the damper end
positions. The position of the damper blade can be read off on a mechanical position indicator.
Manual operation Without power supply, the damper can be operated manually and fixed in any required position.
Release of the locking mechanism can be achieved manually or automatically by applying the
supply voltage.

Safety notes
• The actuator is not allowed to be used outside the specified field of application, especially in
! aircraft or in any other airborne means of transport.

(220mm) minimum on the opposite side for dampers intended for use with an actuator
factory installed on the sleeve.
c. Wall thickness plus maximum 6" (152mm) and minimum 4⅓'' (110mm) on one side and
16'' (406mm) on the opposite side for dampers intended for use with an actuator and
access door factory installed on the sleeve.
5. Perimeter Mounting Angles: The sleeve shall be retained in the wall or partition opening by
the use of steel mounting angles (retaining angles). The minimum angle size shall be 1½" x
1½" x 0.157'' (40x40x4mm). The mounting angles must overlap the structure opening by 1"
(25mm) minimum. The corners of the mounting angles shall be fully welded to each other.
The mounting angles shall be fastened to sleeve on 5"(127mm) maximum centers with 1/2"
(13mm) long welds or ؼ" (6mm) bolts & nuts or No.10 steel screws or minimum Ø3/16"
(5mm) steel rivets. The fasteners shall not interfere with the operation of the damper blades.
6.1. SAFID recommend "S" slip type of breakaway connection as shown in Figure 1 for use on
all sides of rectangular ducts.
6.2. The type of breakaway connection shown in Figure 1 shall have a maximum two pieces
of Ø4.8mm aluminum rivets on each side and on the bottom located in the center of the
"S" slip. The rivets shall penetrate both sides of "S" slip pocket. UL tested duct sealant
may be used.
6.3. For joints of round or flat oval spiral ducts attached to round or flat oval collars which are
part of the damper sleeve, Ø4.8mm aluminum rivets shall be fixed equally spaced around
the circumference of the ducts.
1. For duct diameter 22" (558mm) and smaller shall have three aluminum rivets.
2. Duct diameter over 22" (558mm) up to and including 36" (914mm) shall have 5 rivets.
For flat oval ducts, the diameter shall be considered the largest (major) dimension of the duct.
UL listed sealant may be used.

The tripping device have built-in thermal "fuse or sensor switch" that disconnect the power supply
to the damper actuator as soon as the duct temperature exceeds 165ºF. If the power supply is
interrupted, the energy stored at the built-in spring-return of the actuator will moves back the
damper blades to its safe position (closed position).
The tripping device can be manually reset by pressing the reset button after the temperature
cooled down below the set point (165°F).
Refer to product technical data sheet or contact SAFID for further information.
13. Thermoelectric Tripping Device Specification: Model: BAE165 US or SF74 (165ºF Klixon)
Tripping device set point 165°F
Built-in manual reset button.
Short circuit protected against damage to cable.
Application: The BAE165 US or SF74 (165ºF Klixon) thermoelectric resettable tripping device
(ERL) operates in conjunction with a UL listed safety actuator for use in Fire & Smoke
applications. The tripping device drives a motorized fire damper to its safe position when the
temperature at the sensor exceed the set value. The device is connected in series with the
power supply of the fire & smoke damper actuator. The wiring method must be in accordance
with Class1 field wiring method for plenum application as required by National Electric Code
(NEC). Jacket the cable with suitable flexible conduit. Mount the conduit into the ERL metal
bushing by means of the provided screw.
Refer to product technical data sheet or contact SAFID for further information.
NOTES:
1. Airflow can be at opposite direction.
15. OPERATION:
15.1 Fire Mode:
If detected a high temperature exceeding 165ºF, the ERL (Thermoelectric Tripping Device) will
interrups the power supply to the actuator and the energy stored at the spring-return of the
actuator will moves the damper back to its safe position (closed damper blades).
15.2 Smoke Mode:
If the smoke detector detected a smoke, the power supply to the damper actuator must be
automatically disconnected and the energy stored at the spring-return of the actuator will
moves the damper back to its safe position (closed damper blades).
16. MAINTENANCE:
Dampers shall be maintained at intervals as stated in "NFPA 90A" and 92A. A duct access
door to be located on the jackshaft side of each damper for inspection and maintenance.
Some other maintenance codes includes: UL 864, AMCA 503-03 and local codes.
