Describe any challenges you have had to overcome in high school, and how the
circumstance/experience(s) influenced you and your learning. (Within 300 words)

Entering high school, my family had a major financial crisis. My father’s business went
bankrupt, and we had to move to a different city. Because of this, I had to homeschool for a
year. As my father started a new business and our financial situation began to improve, I
attended school again in Beacon. During school, I was able to finish the courses faster than
most of my peers as I learn to establish a more critical mind and focus. As such, I was able to
have more time for the many extracurriculars I participated in.

However, my high school journey was not smooth. My father’s business was very new, and the
income he made was unstable. I remember the times when we could not afford having internet
at home and filling up the gas tank of our car just so we could pay me and my brothers’ tuition
fee. During these difficult times, I was determined to do my part as a student and as a son to
work hard in achieving more in my academic studies and scores whilst helping my father with
his business. As I am eldest son, I also had to take care of my two brothers and help them in
their studies. I was determined not to let my family’s financial situation affect my studies at
school as I saw how hard my family had to work to afford our tuition and other monthly bills.

Through all this, I have learned to be perseverant and hard-working. My family’s circumstances
helped me to realize about the importance of relying on God and seeking His help in the midst
of trouble. With His help, I was able to finish up my high school courses with a high score and
also persevere and make it through these tough challenges. I would say that these past few
years have definitely prepared me for university and beyond.
