Contributing around 60% to the exports i, Textiles industry is a major backbone for Pakistan’s
external sector and economy. One of the leading players in this industry is Kohinoor Mills. Situated
near Lahore, KML has a rich history. It was incorporated in 1987 as only a weaving mill, however,
the company has grown over the years venturing into Dyeing & Finishing and Energy thus evolving
into one of the largest vertically integrated mills in Pakistan. In 2020, the company reported a topline
of 11.99 Billion PKR, down by 14% from the revenue of 14 billion in 2018-19. The company went
public in 1990.

“Our vision is to create sustainable growth and co-existence for our shareholders,
customers, suppliers, the communities we operate in and the environment” ii.

Kohinoor Mills supplies over 70 million meters of grey, white and dyed fabric to fashion brands and
retailers both locally and globally. The company’s business can be divided into three major
segments – Weaving, Dyeing & Finishing and Energy. Weaving is KML’s oldest and flagship
division. From a site of 48 looms in 1988, today a start-of-the-art facility stands with 258 jet looms
from leading technology providers from Japan and Belgium. This division has a capacity of
producing over 40 million meters of grey fabric annually – consumed both by the upstream Dyeing
segment and exported all over the world.
The Dyeing division is relatively new which was setup in 2002. This scaling up decision came as a
part of company’s strategic move to compete with its European competitors and to counteract their
rising, uncompetitive prices in the global market. The Dyeing division has an annual capacity to
produce 48 million meters of fabric.

In order to tackle the growing energy shortages of Pakistan and related losses, KML setup an IPP by
the name of “Kohinoor Genertek” in 2003. With an installed capacity of 30 MW electricity and 30
Tons/hour steam, the independent power plant has the capacity to provide uninterrupted energy
supply to the other two divisions of the company.

“The company shall achieve its mission through a continuous process of sourcing,
developing, implementing and managing cutting edge technologies along with industry
best practices and top human resources to create innovative products and services for
our customers while adding positive value for our stakeholders, suppliers and the
communities we operate in”iii.
Why should we study about Kohinoor?

If one was to name the leading apparel retailers of the world, names like Zara, Next, Ralph Lauren
and Levi’s would surely come up. However, what most of us Pakistanis would not be aware of is the
fact that these global retailers source a chunk of their fabric from our local producers – one of them
being Kohinoor. Providing high quality products, the company earned around 81% of their revenue
from export sources in 2020, up from 79% in 2019. Thus, the company of this size is not just worth
learning from a business perspective, but also as a proud Pakistani.
