New York Fresco Pop: Photographs by Marc Kaczmarek Opens at TAMA Gallery October 1
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE August 20-- TAMA Gallery is pleased to present the first solo exhibition of New York photographer and artist Marc Kaczmarek. New
York Fresco Pop--a thirty-year photographic journal of New York 's transient public visual culture--opens Thursday, October 1. Artist reception on the same day is from 6 -
8 pm.
Kaczmarek's explosive and compelling photography captures, in his words, " [the] images seen exactly as I found them, black-and-white and color images
coexisting on the walls and buildings, in window displays and public spaces throughout New York City." He began photographing slogans and graffiti that populated most of
the buildings in downtown and lower Manhattan in the mid-1970s through the 1990s. He took a brief hiatus from the project before hitting the streets again with camera on
hand in the last couple of years. This time, the artist realized that "the process of time and transformation (many of the wall arts had been replaced and superimposed with
new visuals many times over) are for me visual poetry. Exploring that process with the camera allows me to make it tangible."
Taking photographs of building-size billboards and sex-driven store window displays turned into a focused area for the project in recent years. Kaczmarek sees
the New York images as modern versions of the great medieval and renaissance fresco art of Europe. In medieval times, frescoes of religious icons were powerful messages
from the Catholic Church to turn the public into believers. In 21st century New York, billboards and window displays are manifestations of the religion of consumerism.
"They are images of products to be consumed, whether needed or not," says Kaczmarek. Kaczmarek's photographs deftly captures the essence in content and design of
displays that show "a descent into hell, expressing the dark side of our creativity, their social and psychological content mirroring our transitional time and reflecting a society
in fragmentation."
Marc Kaczmarek was born and raised in France. He received his first camera at age 12. He came to New York in 1962 where he became immersed in
photography since meeting Russian-born photographer, designer and legendary art director Alexey Brodovitch, who became a teacher and mentor. His work in classical
photography was also greatly influenced by another mentor, artist Domenico Paulon. Kaczmarek served for twenty years on the faculty of Parsons The New School of
Design, teaching photography to graduate students. He has produced short films on dance and architectural landscapes, and recently completed a photographic series on
Ginseng: An Endangered Species .
A recent publication of New York Fresco Pop accompanies the exhibition at TAMA Gallery, with introduction by R. Roger Remington, the Massimo and Lella Vignelli
Distinguished Professor of Design at Rochester Institute of Technology. Poetry by Max Blagg are included in the publication.
TAMA Gallery is a showcase for antique and contemporary Asian and international art and interiors (www.tamagallery.biz). It offers a special world of interiors
strongly influenced by Asian design and sensibilities for the modern world.
