Manual Transaxle System

Inspection
1. Uplift the vehicle with lift.
2. Loosen the oil filler plug (A).

3. Check the oil level.

Oil level must be up to fill the hole, if not, add oil until it runs over.

4. Install the filler plug.


Tightening torque:
58.9 ~ 78.5 N.m (6.0 ~ 8.0 kgf.m, 43.4 ~ 57.8 lb-ft)

Replacement
1. Uplift the vehicle with lift.
2. Drain the manual transaxle oil after loosening the drain plug (A).

3. Install the drain plug with new gasket.


Tightening torque:
58.9 ~ 78.5 N.m (6.0 ~ 8.0 kgf.m, 43.4 ~ 57.9 lb-ft)
4. Loosen the oil filler plug (A).

5. Add new oil through the filler plug hole and, fill it just below the plug opening.
Standard oil:SAE 75W/85, API GL-4
Oil capacity:1.9 ~ 2.0 L (0.50 ~ 0.53 U.S.gal., 2.01 ~ 2.11 U.S. qt., 1.67 ~ 1.76 lmp qt.)
6. Install the oil filler plug.
Tightening torque:
58.9 ~ 78.5 N.m (6.0 ~ 8.0 kgf.m, 43.4 ~ 57.8 lb-ft)

Manual Transaxle System

Removal
1. Remove the following items.
(1) Air cleaner assembly
(Refer to Engine Mechanical System - "Air Cleaner")
(2) Battery and battery tray
(Refer to Engine Electrical System -"Battery")
2. Disconnect the vehicle speed sensor connector (A) and back up lamp switch connector (B).

3. Remove the wiring bracket (A).

4. Remove the ground (A).

5. Remove the control cable.


(1) Remove the pin (A) and washer (B).
(2) Remove the bracket mounting bolts (C).

6. Remove the pin (A) and then Remove the concentric slave cylinder tube (B).

7. Remove the cowl top cover.


(Refer to Body - "Cowl Top Cover")
8. Using the engine support fixture (Support SST No.: 09200-2S100/2S200, Adapter SST No.: 09200-4X000, Beam SST No.: 09200-
3N000 or 38001), hold the engine and transaxle assembly safely.

9. Remove the transaxle upper mounting bolt (B-2ea) and the start motor mounting bolt (A-2ea).
Tightening torque:
(A) 49.0 ~ 63.7 N.m (5.0 ~ 6.5 kgf.m, 36.2 ~ 47.0 lb-ft)
(B) 42.2 ~ 53.9 N.m (4.3 ~ 5.5 kgf.m, 31.1 ~ 39.8 lb-ft)

10. Remove the cover (A).

11. Remove the transaxle mounting bracket bolts (A) and then loosen the transaxle support bracket bolts (B).
Tightening torque:
(A) 88.3 ~ 107.9 N.m (9.0 ~ 11.0 kgf.m, 65.1 ~ 79.6 lb-ft)
(B) 58.9 ~ 78.5 N.m (6.0 ~ 8.0 kgf.m, 43.4 ~ 57.8 lb-ft)

12. Remove the under cover.
13. Remove the Intercooler pipe mounting bolts (A) and clamp (B).

14. Remove the vacuum pump.


(Refer to Brake System - "Brake Booster")
15. Remove the drive shaft assembly.
(Refer to Driveshaft and axle - "Front Driveshaft")
16. Remove the drive shaft cover (A).

17. Remove the roll rod bracket (C) after removing bolt (A,B).
Tightening torque:
(A) 49.0 ~ 63.7 N.m (5.0 ~ 6.5 kgf.m, 36.2 ~ 47.0 lb-ft)
(B) 107.9 ~ 127.5 N.m (11.0 ~ 13.0 kgf.m, 79.6 ~ 94.1 lb-ft)

18. Remove the mounting bolts (A-3ea, B-2ea) of lower part of the transaxle, and remove the transaxle assembly by supporting it with a
jack.
Tightening torque:
(A) 42.2 ~ 48.1 N.m (4.3 ~ 4.9 kgf.m, 31.1 ~ 35.4 lb-ft)
(B) 42.2 ~ 53.9 N.m (4.3 ~ 5.5 kgf.m, 31.1 ~ 39.8 lb-ft)

• Be careful not to damage other system or parts near by when removing the engine and transaxle assembly.

Installation

• If the oil seal on the transaxle case side is damaged and fluid is leaking, replace the oil seal with a new unit. When installing the
new oil seal, use the specialized tool (oil seal installer, 09453-2F300).

1. Install in the reverse order of removal.


2. Adding manual transaxle fluid after Installing the manual transaxle.
(Refer to Manual Transaxle System - "Manual Transaxle Fluid")
3. Perform bleeding air procedure in concentric slave cylinder after pouring the brake fluid.
(Refer to Concentric Slave Cylinder Assembly - "Adjustment")

Operation principle :Back up lamp switch is pushed by the reverse lug sliding when select arm, and switches the back up lamp.
Function :Turn on the back up lamp when reversing.

Inspection
1. Remove the air cleaner assembly.

2. Remove the battery and battery tray.

3. Disconnect the back up lamp switch connector (A).

4. Check the continuity between no. 1 and 2 terminals of backup lamp switch. When the shift lever is in reverse, there should be
continuity.

Replacement
1. Remove the air cleaner assembly.
(Refer to Engine Mechanical System - "Air Cleaner")
2. Remove the battery and battery tray.
(Refer to Engine Electrical System - "Battery")
3. Disconnect the back up lamp switch connector (A).

4. Remove the back up lamp switch (A).

5. Replace a new one and install the back up lamp switch.
Tightening torque:
39.2 ~ 58.8 N.m (4.0 ~ 6.0 kgf.m, 28.9 ~ 43.4 lb-ft)
Manual Transaxle System

Description
Component location :Manual transaxle case

Operation principle :Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) is hall sensor type and senses the rotating speed of differential gear.
Function
• Comparing engine speed with vehicle speed calculated based on vehicle speed sensor signal, ECM recognizes engaged gear.
• Based on the information about engaged gear, ECM performs optimum fuel injection quantity correction.
• VSS signal is also used in speed meter of cluster, A/C control module, BCM, etc.

Inspection
W/Harness Inspection
1. Check the vehicle speed sensor by using the scan tool.
(if normal, current vehicle speed is display)
2. Check if current vehicle speed is same as vehicle speed displayed on the GDS.

3. Check the damage to the connectors and wiring.
4. Check the power.
(1) Turn ignition switch OFF.
(2) Disconnect the vehicle speed sensor.
(3) Turn ignition switch ON.
(4) Check the voltage of the power terminal.
Specification :11.5V ~ 13.0V
5. Check the signal.
(1) Turn ignition switch OFF.
(2) Disconnect the vehicle speed sensor.
(3) Turn ignition switch ON.
(4) Check the voltage of the signal terminal.
Specification :8.0V ~ 11.5V
6. Check the ground.
(1) Turn ignition switch OFF.
(2) Disconnect the vehicle speed sensor.
(3) Turn ignition switch ON.
(4) Check the voltage between signal terminal and body ground.
(5) Check the voltage between signal terminal and ground terminal.
Specification :(4) - (5) = Within 200mV

Component Inspection
1. IG KEY "OFF", ENGINE "OFF".
2. Disconnect the vehicle speed sensor connector.
3. Disconnect the vehicle speed sensor and driven gear.
4. Check the wear of spline (A).

5. Check rotating state of vehicle speed sensor driven gear.


6. Connect the vehicle speed sensor connector and IG KEY "ON".
7. Rotate the driven gear with hand.
Specification :Vehicle Speed Signal generates.

Removal
1. Remove the air cleaner assembly.
(Refer to Engine Mechanical System - "Air Cleaner")
2. Remove the battery and battery tray.

3. Disconnect the vehicle speed sensor (A).

4. Remove the vehicle speed sensor (A) and driven gear.


Tightening torque:
5.9 ~ 7.8 N.m (0.6 ~ 0.8 kgf.m, 4.3 ~ 5.8 lb-ft)

After removing speed sensor, be careful not to enter dust, foreign matters, etc in speed sensor hole.
5. Separate the vehicle speed sensor (A) and driven gear (B).

Installation
1. Install in the reverse order of removal.

Do not reuse the O-ring (A).

Removal
1. Remove the floor Interior console assembly.
(Refer to Body - " Floor Console")
2. Remove the cover (A).

3. Remove the select cable (B) by removing the snap pin (A).

4. Remove the shift cable (B) after removing the clip (A).

5. Remove the cable socket (A) from lever assembly after pulling the cable socket clip in the direction of the arrow.

6. Remove the shift lever assembly (B) by removing the bolts (A-4ea).
Tightening torque:
8.8 ~ 13.7 N.m (0.9 ~ 1.4 kgf.m, 6.5 ~ 10.1 lb-ft)

7. Remove the boots (A) and knob (B) from the lever assembly.

Rotating counter-clockwise shift lever knob (B).

Installation
1. Install in the reverse order of removal.

• When installing, set room side shift lever and T/M side lever to "N" position.

Inspection
1. Check operating of lever of T/M side when operating shift lever after assembly.
2. When shift lever to "R" position, check the position of "skirt".
3. When lever is shifted to each position, if stop occur between two position, re-adjust select cable.
(Refer to Control cable - "Adjustment")

Inspection
1. Check the select cable for proper operation and for damage.
2. Check the shift cable for proper operation and for damage.
3. Check the boots for damage.
4. Check the boots for wear abrasion sticking, restricted movement or damage.

Removal
1. Remove the floor console assembly.
(Refer to Body - " Floor Console")
2. Remove the select cable (B) by removing the snap pin (A).

3. Remove the shift cable (B) after removing the clip (A).

4. Remove the cable socket (A) from lever assembly after pulling the cable socket clip in the direction of the arrow.

5. Remove the retainer (A) after loosen the nut (B).

6. Remove the air cleaner assembly.

7. Remove the battery and battery tray.
(Refer to Engine Electrical System - "Battery")
8. Remove the shift & select cable.

(1) Remove the pin (A) and washer (B).


(2) Make unlock clip (C) and then remove the shift & select cable and the clip (C) from the bracket.

• Do not reuse the clip (C).

9. Remove the shift cable at cabin room.

Installation

• When installing, set room side Shift lever and T/M side lever to N position.
1. Install the control cable (B) and clip (A) on the bracket.

2. Install the washer (B) and pin (A).

3. Tighten the nut (B) after install the retainer (A).


Tightening torque:
11.8 ~ 14.7 N.m (1.2 ~ 1.5 kgf.m, 8.7 ~ 10.8 lb-ft)

4. Install the cable socket (A) on the shift lever assembly.

5. Install the shift cable (B) and clip (A).

6. Shift lever to "3rd".


7. Install the snap pin (A) after install the select cable (B).

• Install the snap pin (A) after adjust the select cable (B).
(Refer to Control Cable - "Adjustment")

8. Install the floor console assembly.


(Refer to Body - " Floor Console")
9. Install the battery and battery tray.
(Refer to Engine Electrical System - "Battery")
10. Install the air cleaner assembly.
(Refer to Engine Electrical System - "Battery")

Adjustment
Select cable adjustment
1. Remove the select cable snap pin (A) and then remove the select cable (B) from the shift lever pin.

2. Shift the shift lever to 3rd gear.
3. Move the slide clip (B) of guide member (A) in the direction as shown in the illustration.

4. Install the select cable (A).

5. Insert the slide clip in the direction as shown in the illustration and then install the snap pin (A).

Removal
1. Remove the air cleaner assembly.
(Refer to Engine Mechanical System - "Air Cleaner")
2. Remove the battery and battery tray.
(Refer to Engine Electrical System - "Battery")
3. Set shift lever to "N" position.
4. Separate the control cable from the control shaft after remove the pin (A) and washer (B).

5. Remove the control shaft assembly after loosen the bolts.


Tightening torque:
19.6 ~ 26.5 N.m (2.0 ~ 2.7 kgf.m,14.5 ~ 19.5 lb-ft)

Installation
1. Install in the reverse order of removal.

• When installing, set control shaft lever to neutral position.

• When installing, apply the sealant as shown in the illustration.
Specified sealant :LOCTITE 5060 or Anaerobic adhesives type J (For flange)

2. After installing, check to be sure that this part operates as designed at each range of T/M side corresponding to each position of shift
lever.
