GUIDELINES FOR VPTH 121 – NECROPSY ACTIVITY

1. ALL students should attend their scheduled necropsy date and time. There will be no make up class for
this activity. Automatically, those students who will be absent or late for this activity will be graded 0
for this part of the course.

2. The following full personal safety protective equipment and attire is advised on the necropsy scheduled
date and time:
A. Surgical gloves of proper size/Heavy duty rubber gloves
B. Hair cover or mask and goggles (optional)
C. Face mask
D. Cover all or full body cover gown
E. Plastic apron (optional)

3. The following materials will be needed for the postmortem examination of your animals:
A. Disinfectants (Alcohol, Lysol spray and any bleach) – per group
B. Scissors
C. Knives
D. Forceps
E. Scalpel handle and blades
F. Trash bags – for proper disposal of the carcass

4. The necropsy activity will be 30% of your final VPTH 121 Lab grade. It will be divided based on the
following criteria:
Execution – 15%
Obtain flock history
External examination of the animal
Open the body of the animal
Observe organs in situ
Remove the organs for detailed examination and sampling
Examine and sample the organs for lesions present
Consider observations for diagnosis and pathology report
Necropsy report – 15%
Attached with this guideline is the sample necropsy report but not limited to it. You may include
additional information depending on the condition of your animal. ALL necropsy reports will be
submitted individually at wllumbera@up.edu.ph on or before DECEMBER 03, 2015 (12 noon). Failure
to submit on the given time will automatically have 0 on the necropsy report part. Late necropsy reports
will not be accepted.
