202 PRINCIPLES OF PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT IN

ADULT SOCIAL CARE SETTINGS

OUTCOME 1 UNDERSTAND WHATS IS REQUIRED FOR GOOD


PRACTICE IN ADULT SOCIAL CARE ROLES.

1.1 Identify standards that influence the way adult social care job
roles are carried out.

Standards that influence the way jobs are carried out are usually found in legislation
regarding the job role directly, such as;

~ Care Standards Act 2000


~ Domiciliary Care Regulations 2000
~ Health and Safety at Work Act 1974
~ Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1992
~ GSCC Codes of Practice for Social Care Workers
~ National Occupational Standards Safety (General Food Hygiene)
Regulations
~ Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSSH)
~ Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrence
Regulations (RIDDOR).

1.2 Explain why reflecting on work activities is an important way to


develop own knowledge and skills.

Reflecting on activities from work and also other places, is a good way to develop
the things you know, and also help you discover the things you don't know. Allowing
you to help set your mind on ways to develop your knowledge and fill in any gaps in
your knowledge. Reflecting on what has happened during the work day can help
you recognise mistakes made and help not to make them again. Also helps make
you see maybe there is a different/better way of doing certain things.
1.3 Describe ways to ensure that personal attitudes or beliefs do
not obstruct the quality of work.

This is more difficult than it sounds, as there are many different backgrounds that
people come from, and it's challenging to know where any boundaries may be.
Everyone is entitled to have their own opinions and beliefs, it's important that they
do not have a negative impact on a person's work.
OUTCOME 2 UNDERSTAND HOW LEARNING ACTIVITIES CAN
DEVELOP KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND
UNDERSTANDING

2.1 Describe how a learning activity has improved own knowledge,


skills and understanding.

When I first started working for the company I am with now, I did a number of
course, both on line and in the office. One of the courses that stands out in my mind
was the Manual Handling course. We did both theory and practical. I had the
opportunity to be hoisted. This helped me gain knowledge and understanding of
how a service user feels, especially the first time they had to use one, the nerves,
the anxious feeling. This has helped me, because I know have an understanding of
how they actually feel, and that skill helps me feel better equipped to put them at
ease, making them feel less anxious.

2.2 Describe how reflecting on a situation has improved own


knowledge, skills and understanding.

I have one service user, who I do their bed call for, on this bed call we get a pre-
prepared meal out of the freezer for the next day. Whilst at the call a couple of
weeks into the job, I was in the kitchen, putting the washing up away thinking I
need to get a meal out of the freezer. I went to take one out, and on reflection I
realised we was actually taking away this person's freedom of choice, by us
choosing the meal for them. I now get the person in question to accompany me into
the kitchen and choose what they would like themselves .
2.3 Describe how feedback from others has developed own
knowledge, skills and understand .

When I first started the job, there was certain area's I was unsure about, so
feedback was important from other colleague's. We all have a certain way of
doing certain things, but colleague's may have an easier or better way to do
something, so hearing feedback is good this way.
OUTCOME 3 KNOW HOW A PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT PLAN
CAN CONTRIBUTE TO OWN LEARNING AND
DEVELOPMENT.

3.1 Define the term 'personal development plan'

Personal development plan is a term which describes an agreed way of recording


information such as agreed objectives in regards to an individual, proposals on
how to meet those objectives and the activities to follow. Including timescales for
reviews amongst other training and dates to assess the progress of any of the
above, though the term 'personal development plan' may not be used exactly.

3.2 Identify who could be involved in the personal development


plan process.

There are lots of people involved with certain service user's personal
development plan, these include but are not limited to people such as;

~ The individual
~ Carers
~ Advocates
~ Supervisor
~ Line manager
~ Employer
~ Other professionals (nurse's or doctor's etc)

3.3 Identify sources of support for own learning and development.

I can gain support for my own learning and development from many places, both in
the workplace and outside the workplace, such as;

~ Formal support (government funded schemes and organisations –


such as college's and libraries)
~ In a supervision
~ An appraisal
~ Within the organisation (speaking to senior staff/colleagues
~ Outside the organisation (people with experience and knowledge that you
can speak to that exist outside of your workplace, such as family and
friends).

3.4 List the benefits of using a personal development plan to identify


ongoing improvements in own knowledge and
understanding.

The benefits to having personal development plans in place include;

~ Focusing on what an individual wants to achieve and how to


achieve it.
~ To develop greater self-awareness of training needs.
~ To increase the understanding of how to meet those needs.
~ It provides evidence to show how and what approach was taken in
the attempt to improve your own knowledge and understanding.
