Michigan's Capitol Raid

On Sunday, January 17th, Law
enforcement officers in Michigan were on
high alert as armed protests began outside of
the capitol building. Many groups arrived in
protest of president-elect Joe Biden's
Inauguration. This coincidentally came two
weeks after the storm and things turned
deadly in the U.S. Capitol building.
Michigan governor Gretchen Whitmer had
activated the Michigan National Guard
ahead of the planned protests on Sunday. By
1:30 the “boogaloo guys” left the capitol
building.

Detroit Lions New Head Coach

The Detroit Lions confirmed on
Wednesday, January 20th that they hired
Dan Campbell as new head coach. Campbell
agreed to a reported 6-year deal. Campbell
previously coached as New Orleans Saints
assistant coach. The Lions hired a general
manager on Thursday, January 14th bringing
in Brad Holmes, the college director of
scouting for the L.A. Rams.
Campbell replaces Matt Patricia,
who was fired before the season ended,
along with general manager Bob Quinn.
Campbell is expected to bring fellow Saints
assistant Aaron Glenn to Detroit as
defensive coordinator.
Campbell has more than 20 years of
experience as both a coach and player in the
National Football League. The Lions are
expecting him to promote the culture of the
team and bring high energy. Campbell has
previous head coaching experience as a
fill-in head coach for the Miami Dolphins in
2015. He went 5-7 during that stint. Since
then, he’s been a top assistant on Sean
Payton’s staff in New Orleans.
Campbell, 44, actually played tight
end for the Lions from 2006 to 2008,
appearing in 19 games. He was part of the
infamous 0-16 season. He was also part of
the Saints Super Bowl winning team in
2009-2010, but was injured before the
season started that year and never had the
chance to play a game. He retired as a player
after that season.

Plane House

A former engineer named Bruce
Campell turned a Boeing airplane that he
bought in 1999 into a house.
Bruce Campbell was an electrical
engineer who bought a Boeing 727 airplane
back in 1999. He then decided to turn it into
a home in Portland, Oregon.
Bruce Campbell, 64, has always had
a dream to make his home a plane. He
finally took action on that and it only cost
him $220,000 after modifications. Bruce
spends 6 months at his plane-house,
alternating living between Portland and
Japan.
He hopes to buy an even bigger
plane and renovate it into a house as well, in
Japan. ​"I don't mean to offend, but wood is
in my view a terrible building material,"
Bruce explained on his website,"But retired
airliners can withstand 575 mph winds ... are
highly fire-resistant, and provide superior
security. They're among the finest structures
that mankind has ever built." As you can
see, Bruce thinks that a plane-home is the
perfect home.

Zoo cruelty

Some local people all over Michigan think
animals are put in cruelty when displayed in
zoos and taken away from their habitat.
Many people think differently, but to a
choice of question that leads up to you,
some animals are forced to train each day,
every day, hours and hours to train tricks
when they are shown on shows. People's
opinions may be different but some think so,
so let's see some examples of why people
think this.

 People believe that they see animals
being smacked with long leases until they
have done the trick perfectly, or maybe even
not being fed, which leads to hunger and
starvation. But some people say this is
completely false. Local people again in
Michigan say they treat their display/show
animals with caring respect but when they
fail a trick, they don’t give them a “treat”
and must correct them carefully and when
the animals such as dolphins do a trick that
is right, they are rewarded with treats!
But as you can see in the previous
photo, this tiger is in a small cell starved and
dirty. This way of behavior from a zoo that
should never be done, this is another form of
harsh animal abuse that you should never

Some people think that the
zookeepers don’t clean the tanks/aquariums.
But i would like to say, one time i went to
the Detroit Zoo and we went under a tube
with fish in the tube where you can walk
through. and it was amazing. The water was
a bit merkey but overall, it was a great
experience, so i do think they clean the tanks
but not very often due to all the
visitors/tourists.But also, people may
disagree saying they see clear blue sparkling
water!
And yes, there is some photos going
around the internet of animals in
chains,skinny,dirty, and feared...with
dehydration….Some of those photos can be
true, yes, unfortunately some zoos are like
that also, but on the other hand, some zoos
treat all there animals with love and respect,
like what we should so also as humans.
Pompeii's Museum Reopens

In the year 79 A.D Pompeii, a city in
Italy that was located at the base of Mount
Vesuvius, was buried under a thick blanket
of volcanic ash from Vesuvius. Years later
in 1873 the antiquarium opened and showed
the many wonders of Pompeii’s life. This
museum thrived for many years until WW​II
when it was bombed and badly damaged.
The museum recently reopened to only Italy
due to the unfortunate pandemic. Massimo
Osanna says that this is “a sign of great hope
during a very difficult moment.

Pygmy Possums Found on Kangaroo Island

Pygmy possums were thought to be
extinct after a huge wildfire on Kangaroo
Island, Australia. The wildfire almost a year
ago destroyed all of the pygmy possums
habitat. Pygmy possums are one of the
smallest types of possums in the world
weighing less than 10 grams. After the
wildfire Scientists documented the species
living post fire to see what animals they
could help. After searching the island only
one pygmy possum was found. They
continued to let the pygmy possum live on
kangaroo island in hopes that it will survive
on the island.

Australian Stinging Tree

The Australian stinging tree grows
in the rainforest of eastern Australia, and
they are called gympie-gympies by the
Indigenous Gubbi Gubbi people. The leaves
of this tree appear velvety with a soft
texture. The stinging tree, for instance,
delivers severe pain to anyone who touches
it. ​A brush with the tree is as "surprising as
an electric shock," says Thomas Durek, a
biochemist at the University of Queensland
in Brisbane, Australia, who took part in the
new study.​Scientists have identified why the
leaves from the stinging tree cause a
stinging sensation. ​The structure of this trees
leaves produce pain-producing chemical
which looks a lot like spider venom.The
pain has staying power that can be triggered
days or even weeks after an encounter while
taking a shower or scratching the area that
came in contact with the tree​.​The sting is
delivered by tiny hairs that cover the leaves,
stems and fruits. The hollow hairs are made
of silica, the same substance in glass. The
hairs act like tiny hypodermic needles and
with the slightest touch, they inject venom
into the skin. This is probably a defense
against hungry herbivores, but some animals
can munch the leaves without any ill effects.

Let's start with the xbox series X
The series x is soon coming back to stores
such as walmart and others myers to and
definitely best buy.
Any way the price has probably gone up due
supply and demand although there are some
people out there that sell them for a really
high price, almost unreasonable.
PS5
Let's finish off with the PS5. The PS5 was
promised to be in walmart but actually
appeared on walmart.com but it was soon
taken off the website due to sale reasons and
restrictions.
But it was soon back up on the web site and
in stores.
​Icebreakers deployed to Relieve St. Clair
River Flooding

Two icebreakers were
deployed to help relieve St. Clair
river flooding. In St. Clair, there was
a massive flood that covered up an
entire city on the third of February,
2021 around 1:30 pm.. The flood
was caused by an ice build up on the
St. Clair River. Two men went to
clear up all the ice to stop the
flooding. People around the city
volunteered to help clean up all the
garbage and extra stuff over the city.
There have been floods all over St.
Clair County but mainly around the
river areas. There have been lots of
flood warnings since then.

Transgender Empowerment Month

Be You. That’s the message Stand With
Trans, a transgender support organization,
gives out each Transgender Empowerment
Month and LGBTQ+ History Month. Things
in both 2020 and 2021 are different with the
pandemic, so we need to find new methods
of celebrating this month! Stand With Trans
during these months, are hosting virtual
events that are not just for teens, but for
anyone else including allies! These virtual
events are free for children and teens,
though, there’s still a price for adults, being
50$ for a month’s worth of programming.
This is a good thing, because the event will
be able to have people attend when they
couldn’t attend before. The goal in mind is
to help transgender youth feel more safe in
the world today.

14 Killed in Volcanic Eruption on New
Zealand's White Island

​ On December 9, a volcano erupted on
White Island in New Zealand. By December
13, 14 people had been declared dead. The
blast also left 30 people injured and two
others missing. Calls are emerging to
investigate the safety of tourism at New
Zealand's most active volcano.
Mark Law is a commercial helicopter
pilot who has led tours to the island for 10
years. He and other pilots rescued 12 victims
immediately after the eruption, concerned
that no one else would come for them.
Others tried to rescue survivors using
boats. Michael Schade, a U.S.-based
engineer, detailed the scene following the
blast in a series of photos and videos he
posted to Twitter.Schade wrote that his
family had left the island only 20 minutes
before the eruption. "[We] were waiting at
our boat about to leave when we saw it."
They were able to rescue some survivors
and they needed immediate care. Schade
described how helicopters on the island
looked destroyed.
Police now believe that 47 visitors
were on the island when it erupted at 2:11
p.m. on December 10. It launched thick
clouds of ash 12,000 feet into the air leaving
some survivors with severe burns. Half of
the visitors are Australian. Others are from
the United States, New Zealand, China,
Germany, Malaysia and the United
Kingdom. Several were passengers from a
Royal Caribbean cruise ship docked nearby.
The survivors range between the ages of 13
and 72. Doctors described injuries from
severe skin burns from hot gas, ash and
rubble to internal burns from the toxic gases
spewed during the eruption.Windy
conditions on the island and minor volcanic
eruption activity still taking place have
slowed efforts to investigate and find bodies.
However, scientists forecast that the most
violent eruption has passed for now. Police
said they plan to fly drones carrying
equipment to test gas levels.
GeoNet monitors geological activity
in New Zealand and it placed the volcano
alert level at a three out of a five-point scale
during the eruption. Leading up to the
eruption, the alert level was at two.
Medium-level volcanic activity with gas,
steam and mud bursts were observed a week
earlier. Signs of unrest in the days before the
volcano eruption have led to questions as to
why tourists were able to access the island.
GeoNet had reported that bursts of
"explosive gas" and mud from the volcano's
vent had been intensifying in recent weeks.
Barbara Barham's daughter and son-in-law,
Lauren Urey and Matthew, were among
those visiting White Island. Matthew had
left his own mother a message saying the
volcano had erupted and he was so badly
burned, he struggled to use the phone.
Barham said she was furious upon hearing
the volcano had been active in the days
before her family's excursion. Her daughter
and son-in-law remain hospitalized with
severe burns.

Vice President Harris Making History

On Wednesday, January 20th, Vice
President Kamala Harris broke the barrier
that has kept men at the top ranks of
American power for more than two centuries
when she took oath to hold the nation’s
second-highest office. Harris was sworn in
as the first female vice president and the first
Black woman and person of South Asian
descent to hold the position. Harris was
sworn in by Supreme Court Justice Sonia
Sotomayor in front of the U.S. Capitol.
The moment was steeped in history
and significance in more ways than just one.
She was escorted to the podium by Capitol
Police Officer Eugene Goodman. He was
the officer who single-handedly took on a
mob of Trump supporters as they tried to
breach the Senate floor during the Capitol
insurrection that sought to overturn the
election results. Harris was wearing clothes
designed by two young, emerging Black
designers.
Her rise is historic in any context,
another moment when a stubborn boundary
falls away, expanding the idea of what is
possible in American politics. But it’s
particularly meaningful because Harris is
taking office at a moment of deep​.​the role of
institutional racism and confronting a
pandemic that has disproportionately
devastated Black and brown communities.
Harris is the child of two
immigrants, a stepmother of two and the
wife of a Jewish man. Harris, 56, moved
into the vice presidency just four years after
she first came to Washington as a senator
from California, where she’d served as
attorney general and as San Francisco’s
district attorney. She had expected to work
with a White House run by Hillary Clinton,
but President Donald Trump’s victory
quickly scrambled the nation’s capital and
set the stage for the rise of a new generation
of Democratic stars.

President Biden's Inauguration

Because of the storming of the capitol there
has been a lot of security in Washington
D.C. There were no crowds or parades
because of covid and masks had to be worn
at all times for Biden’s inauguration.
For Biden's opening speech he said
"We've learned again that democracy is
precious and democracy is fragile. This is
America's day. This is democracy's day. A
day in history and hope, of renewal and
resolve." After that he moved on to the
challenges on the road ahead.
He wants to get coronavirus vaccines out in
the first 100 days of being president. He also
sent an immigration proposal to Capitol Hill
that will help immigrants who are in the
U.S. without permission to become citizens.

shortly before leaving office. The award is
the highest honor someone who is not in the

Longer School Year

The state superintendent of Michigan is
recommending that schools lengthen their
school year beyond the 180-day school year.
He says that Coronavirus has had an
effect on us so big that he is now suggesting
that the longer school year will make up for
that. “Just the mental health of kids on
everything that they’ve lost so far. They’ve
lost homecoming. They’ve lost sports
seasons. They lost prom last year and the
dangers of losing proms this year. And now
you’re going to take away some of that
summertime,” said Bendle High School
Principal Brandon Chapman.

High School, says “It’ll make us, kind of
make us go into a slump, is the best way to
put it. Of trying to get our work in, and then
trying to balance that with everything else
too, and taking away part of our summer
with it.” and most students have agreed.

Do Video Games Help with Mental Health?

Oxford University in England has
recently run a test to see if video games can
help or harm a person's mental health.
Oxford Languages defines mental health as,
“​a person’s condition with regard to their
psychological and emotional well-being.”
To start off the scientists needed two types
of information regarding a person's mood
while playing video games and how long a
person plays.
In the study there were more than 3,000
video game players in the study. After they
finished playing video games they were

and it made you feel better imagine playing
your favorite game for a little bit. Newsela
says “Paul Croarkin was one of those
scientists. He is a psychiatrist, a doctor who
studies illnesses of the mind. Croarkin has
studied video gaming and children. He said
it is good that the data on playtime came
from the game makers. That makes it more
accurate.” Other scientists said it was a very
limited test, but overall video games boost
your mood just a little bit.

Couple Arrested For Attack At Airport

A Detroit couple in Romulus, Mi by
the names of Jameel Murphy, 30, and
Raymonique Williams, 29, were accused
with many assaults on attack on a flight
agent. On the day of Jan. 17, the couple was
near their gate at Spirit Airlines when they
started having an argument. The flight agent
came over to speak with them about their
luggage and the fees of it. The couple
attacked the agent by striking him in the face
several times, while trying to open the
boarding gate.
A nearby agent ran over to assess the
situation and was also attacked. The couple
was soon arrested on the scene and the
agents were rushed to a local hospital to
receive treatment. The couple was banned
from Spirit Airlines flights. The couple had
a scheduled court trial on Tuesday, Jan. 19,
at Wayne County's 34th District Court in
Romulus before Judge Brian Oakley. The
couple had been granted a 1,000 personal
bond. And now a pre-trial hearing that is set
for March 17.

Worthy said, ​“It’s hard to imagine that we
are living in a civilized society these days,”
Worthy said in a statement. “This case
represents what we have lost today:
collegiality, waiting your turn, following the
rules, being good to your fellow citizen, and

Prison Inmates Help Student Go to College

Before Sy Newson Green’s
sophomore year his family had medical bills
that were far more expensive than they
thought. His parents lost their jobs and
everything got 10 times worse. That means
Green could no longer attend the private
school he had been going to. The school
could provide him scholarship money but
not enough for him to attend his last year.
A group of men at a local prison
heard of Green's story and decided to step
up and raise the amount of money that was
left for him to go to school. Over the span of
3 years they raised $32,000! ​"I broke down
and started crying because I knew where it
was coming from," Frank Green, Sy's dad.
The inmates started saving in the fall
of 2016. They covered the costs in the
beginning of 2017. They raised $24,000 out
of their own pocket and $8,000 worth of
donations. By this time Green had graduated
from high school.

Governor Whitmer plans to open restaurants
up the 1st of February. According to ​The
Detroit News, ​Gov. Gretchen Whitmer
announced the reopening Friday Morning
January 22. Restaurants and bars will be
allowed to have indoor and outdoor seating
