melting pot de New York et me demandais comment était la
France.
Eh bien, la France aussi est un melting pot.
Il y a eu beaucoup d'immigration après-guerre, portugaise,
italienne et espagnole.
De plus, la France a eu beaucoup de colonies, comme en Afrique
du Nord et en Asie ; c'est pourquoi nous avons beaucoup de
population vietnamienne et maghrébine.
Encore aujourd'hui, la France a des départements et des territoires
dans le monde entier.
On peut dire que c'est un pays multiculturel ! J'espère que tu
viendras bientôt découvrir tout ça.

VOCABULARY PHRASE USAGE

Immigration

Immigration is an important word to know if you're interested in French politics. France has
been a multicultural country for centuries since it's at an important crossing in Europe,
mixing Arabic, Latin, and Northern cultures. This word is made up of two words: in plus
migration. The one who immigrates is called immigré. The opposite is émigration
("emigration"), and those people are called émigrés ("emigrate"). Immigration tends to be a
bit pejorative, so be careful using this word.

This word describes the period that followed the Second World War and lasted for about
twenty years. It's both a noun and an adjective and never varies in gender or number.

As a noun:

1. La période d'après-guerre a été difficile.

"The post-war period was harsh."

As an adjective:

1. Il est né après-guerre.
"He was born during the post-war years."

Maghrébin

This is a politically correct way to describe Arab people in French. It's from the word Maghreb,
which is the North African area. Arabe ("Arab") is really pejorative and considered racist, so
it's better to use maghrébin. The feminine form is maghrébine.

Using Slang t o T alk about Nat ionalit ies

Using slang to talk about nationalities is really pejorative and insulting. It's hardly even used
amongst friends in France, but you can find these words in novels, some satirical
newspapers, movies, or TV shows.

Here are some common words and the nationalities they refer to:
