According to several corporate executive, understanding how the organization work is one of the

many keys of achieving the business purpose. Mooney and Railey defined organization as, “the

form of every human association for the attainment of common purpose.”

“Organization is a system of cooperative activities of two or more persons.”
– Chester Bernard

To have a better and common understanding of what an organization is, let us take a look of the conceptual framework.

Who is managing?

Who/what are being managed?

Why management?
What is the context for management?

What happens if there is no management?

Key Point:
Effective management needs to be externally – (a) being sensitive to regulatory and social constraints, and (b) having access and capacity to mobilize
resources; internally – (a) being sensitive to human behavior, and (b) making optimal utilization of resources.

Organizational Behavior (OB) is a systematic study of people and

structures on behaviors exhibited within the organization.

The roots of organizational behavior can be traced by the following

behavioral sciences:
• Psychology
• Social psychology
• Sociology
• Anthropology

The knowledge gained through studying organizational behavior could

be applied to improve organizational effectiveness.

1. Competitive Advantage for Managers

What do Managers play in the organization?

They make plans, organize i t, control, and lead in the execution of such. To enable them, they need to possess the following skills: •
Conceptual Skills - specialized knowledge in abstraction. Typically individuals need these skills to identify problems, work on
alternatives, make hard decisions and drive policies.
• Interpersonal Skills - specialized knowledge in interacting with individuals or group. These problems need greater variety of thought
or individual contributing pieces of their knowledge.
• Technical Skills - specialized knowledge in solving technical problems. These problems need more individual attention than group
interaction or public consultation.

Challenge Question:

In what sense/aspect does understanding OB gives potential competitive advantage to managers?

2. Develops a culture of sensitivity and competitiveness.

Who are being managed?

When talking about OB it always refers to people – how one engages with the other is one of the many concerns of OB. Having this said,
studying OB will help us understand “why, and how (sometimes what)” do people behave, in a certain manner, or degree, when in a group or
an organization.

3. Promotes harmonious relationship – builds trust and confidence among each other.

Why management?
OB helps us determine why people behave in certain way which makes a more understanding environment where people are harmoniously
interacting with one another. Without this, chaos and disorientation on people’s behavior can lead to the organization’s destruction.

Same with other disciplines in management, OB has also these common dilemmas that makes it a more challenging management task:

▪ Responding to economic pressures

▪ Responding to globalization
▪ Managing workforce diversity
▪ Improving customer service
▪ Improving people skills
▪ Stimulating innovation and change
▪ Working in networked organizations
▪ Helping employees balance work-life conflicts
▪ Creating a positive work environment
▪ Improving ethical behavior
