Worksheet 1

Teacher: Sarah Awada Grade: 7

As-Siraj High Schools (Yanouh)
Name: ……………………… Section: A, B & D

Exercise 1
To distinguish between pure substances and mixtures, seventh graders are asked to heat till boiling two
unknown liquids A and B and to measure their temperatures using an instrument (glassware). The temperatures
are recorded every two minutes according to the following table.

Time in min. 0 2 4 6 8 10 12 14 16
Temperature
of liquid A in 25 39 50 63 75 85 87 89 90
(°C)
Temperature
of liquid B in 18 30 42 55 69 78 79 79 79
(°C)

1. Name the instrument (glassware) used to measure the temperature of liquids A and B.
2. Liquid B is a pure substance. Justify this statement using the above table.
3. Liquid C is a homogenous mixture. What is meant by homogeneous?
4. Given the boiling temperature of alcohol is 79 °C, water is 100°C and olive oil is 43.5 °C. Refer to the
above table to identify liquid B.
5. Liquid B starts to be transformed into a gas as its temperature gets 79 °C. Name the physical change that
occurs as the temperature of liquid B gets 79°C.
6. Indicate whether boiling point is a descriptive or measurable physical property.

Exercise 2
Consider the properties of the sodium element:

Substance Melting point °C Boiling point °C Density g/cm3 Color

Sodium 97.72 883 0.968 Silvery

Hint: Solid Liquid Gas

Melting point Boiling point

1. Classify the given properties of sodium as descriptive and measurable ones.
2. What is the physical state of sodium at T = 0°C? Justify your answer.
3. The physical state of sodium at T = 200℃ is liquid. Justify this statement.
Exercise 3
Ice, the solid form of water, is produced by freezing. Upon heating, it changes from ice into water. Observe the
following graph, and then answer the questions below.

1. Referring to the text and to your acquired knowledge, define freezing.

2. List two properties of ice.
3. Indicate the physical change that ice goes through to change into water. Justify your answer.
4. Ice is a pure substance. Justify this statement by referring to the graph above.
5. Indicate the physical state of ice at 50C.
