GRADE: VII MAX.MARKS:20
SUBJECT: SCIENCE TIME: 40 Minutes
NAME OF THE STUDENT: DATE: 21/06/2022
SECTION A (4 marks)
1. What are the upper and lower fixed points on a Celsius scale thermometer?

2. Thermal energy travels through space from the Sun to the Earth. Space is a vacuum. How is thermal energy
transferred from the Sun to the Earth?

A. by conduction only
B. by convection only
C. by radiation only
D. by convection and radiation

3. Four rods are made from different metals P, Q, R and S. The rods have equal lengths and equal diameters. The rods
are heated at one end, in the same way. The table shows the time taken for the temperature at the other end of each
rod to rise by 1.0°C. Which metal is the best conductor of thermal energy (heat)?

A. metal P
B. metal Q
C. metal R
D. metal S

4. Land and water absorb and release the suns heat in different ways. One result of this is a sea breeze. Which
statement is true of sea breeze?

A. They originate in the day and blow towards the land

B. They originate in the day and blow towards the water
C. They originate in the evening and blow towards the land
D. They originate in the evening and blow towards the water

SECTION B
5. Identify the picture (1 MARK)

a. b.

6. Identify the method of heat transfer for the following situations (2 MARKS)
a. Heating cold pizza in a microwave oven
b. Water boiling in a kettle
c. Ice melting in a hotplate
d. Burning your hand on a hot pan
7. Give reasons: (2 MARKS)
a. Why does warm air rise?
b. Clinical thermometers have a kink in the capillary tube

8. Temperature can be measured using different scales.

a. Complete the table by inserting the missing temperatures by converting the scales (2 MARKS)

Temperature
֯ C K
Boiling point of
liquid nitrogen 77

Boiling point of 100

water
b. Explain what happens to the kinetic energy of the particles when the temperature increases from 20K to 50K.
(2 MARKS)

SECTION C
9. Read the following and answer the questions
Temperature tells us how hot or cold something is. You will see or hear temperatures mentioned in a weather forecast,
and will also come across them in recipes or other instructions. There are different scales to measure the temperature.
Many things have to be stored or used in a particular temperature range to be safe. Temperature is measured with
a thermometer. Main types of thermometers are alcohol in glass thermometer, mercury in glass thermometer, clinical
thermometer, laboratory thermometer.
Thermometers for different uses show different ranges of temperatures
1. What temperature is shown on each of these thermometers? (5 MARKS)
a. b.
2. Differentiate between clinical and laboratory thermometer.
3. What are the different scales to measure the temperature?
4. What is the SI unit of heat? What are the lower and upper fixed points on kelvin scale?

10. Choose the correct answer out of the following choices. (2MARKS)
a. Assertion: Snow is better insulator than ice.
Reason: Snow contain air packet and air is good insulator of heat
b. Assertion: The flow of heat energy from one body to the other depends upon the amount of heat
energy in them
Reason: Heat flows from lower temperature of the body to higher temperature of the body

A) Both assertion and reason are true and reason is the correct explanation of assertion.
B) Both assertion and reason are true but reason is not the correct explanation of assertion.
C) Assertion is true and reason is false.
D) Assertion is false but reason is true.
