TARGET OF THE SUBJECT

Electromagnetic field theory is a basic subject to investigate electric

and magnetic problems:
▪ Investigate electromagnetic wave radiated from an antenna
▪ Investigate the electromagnetic wave propagation in space and in
a waveguide
▪ Investigate the high frequency propagation line (include its basic
parameters) and to calculate the matching impedance for the
propagation line

2. DEFINITION ELECTROMAGNETIC FIELD THEORY

Definition of electromagnetic

▪ Electromagnetic field = electric field + magnetic field

▪ Distribute continuously in space in the form of wave-particle
▪ Electromagnetic wave propagates with the velocity equal to the
velocity of light in free space

2. EXAMPLES ELECTROMAGNETIC WAVE PROPAGATION

▪ Propagtion of wave in free

space (homogenous medium):
anten
▪ Propagtion of wave in
inhomogenous medium (light
propagation in optical fiber)

3. VECTOR CALCULATIONS
Basic mathematic definitions:

▪ Categories:
▪ Scalar field: field quantities are scalar quantities (example: temperature,
voltage)
▪ Vector field: field quantities are vector field (electric field, magnetic field)
▪ Field is not time variable
▪ Field is time variable

3. VECTOR CALCULATIONS
Basic mathematic definitions:

▪ Mathematic necessary:
▪ Vector algebra
▪ Vector analysis
▪ Important relationship:
▪ Gradient: Scalar => Vector
▪ Divergence: Vector => Scalar
▪ ≠ 0: field has source
▪ = 0: field has no source
▪ Rotation: field vector => field vector (≠ 0: field is swirl; = 0: field is not swirl)

SUMMARY

▪ Electromagnetic field theory: base on Maxwell equations

▪ Electromagnetic field has energy: electromagnetic wave
propagate in free space with the velocity equal to the velocity of
light in free space. Electromagnetic field is a basic subject for
radio communication.
▪ Basic field parameters are vector parameters
