At the end of this module, the learner shall be able to:
 Write a draft of a short piece (Fiction, Poetry, Drama, etc.) using any of the literary conventions of genre
following these pointers:
1. Choosing a topic
2. Formulating a thesis statement
3. Organizing and developing ideas
4. Using any literary conventions of a genre
5. Ensuring that theme and technique are effectively developed
II. Content

LITERARY GENRES
In literature, there are different genres.
1. Poetry – Uses carefully chosen language as well as figures of speech (simile, metaphor, hyperbole, personification), and
poetic devices (alliteration, end rhyme, onomatopoeia, repetition), to create a mood or feeling.

2. Fiction – includes any writing that an author makes up from his or her imagination.

3. Fantasy – usually talks about magic, superstition, and incredible worlds that could not exist in real life. Also, everyday
people or animals in unbelievable situations. Within the characters there may be wizards, dragons, gargoyles, or knights.
Even aswang, tikbalang, or tiyanak is applicable.

4. Science Fiction – uses science or technology to create an extraordinary but believable story. Science stories often takes
place in the future.

5. Mystery – is a story based on a strange crime such as a missing object, or the death of a person, or a suspicious
disappearance. Clues are used to solve a mystery, the process which involves suspense.

6. Biography – is an account of a person’s life written by someone else. The writer interviews the subject, as well as his
friends, family, and associates, and then the writer writes about the subject, the subject’s life, and accomplishments.

7. Drama – consists of plays or skills that are meant to be performed on a stage in front of an audience.

8. Nonfiction – includes diaries, essays, and histories as well as biographies and autobiographies. Usually covers a wide
variety of topics.

ASSESSMENT
 Directions: Create your unique composition. It may be poetry, fiction, fantasy, science fiction, mystery,
biography, drama, or nonfiction. Following these pointers:
