Multimedia and ICT

Background Information for Learners


Multimedia refers to a combination of text, animated graphics, video and sound
delivered via electronic means. It may be broadly divided into linear and non-linear
categories. Linear active content progresses without any navigational control for the
viewer such as a cinema presentation while non-linear user interactivity is used to control
progress with a video game or used in self-paced computer-based training. An example
of non-linear content is hypermedia which refers to an extension to what is known as
hypertext, or the ability to open new Web pages by clicking text links on a Web browser.

Multimedia presentations can either be live or recorded. A recorded presentation


may allow interactivity via a navigation system. A live multimedia presentation may allow
interactivity via interaction with the presenter or performer.
