The size of the cross is 21,513 cm, and the width is 8 cm. In the middle of the cross, in a irregular roundel, the Virgin of the so-called Znamenje type is represented. She has Christ-child on her bosom, in a heart shaped locket. The branches of the cross are decorated with stylized vegetable ornament. ‘The material on which the embroidery was done, is not visible because of the stiches too tightly made. The cross draws attention for its artistic values, iconography rarely represented on embroideries and also by its shape and its size. This piece of embroidery was never mentioned before in earlier inventories of the same monastery, More to its shape, but less to its dimensions, this cross could be considered as a part of an omophorion. It would be at the same time the easiest solution of the problem. It could be supposed that our object was applied to a liturgical covering. We ate led to this point by the fact that there is 4 painted wooden proscomidian plate in the same treasury, with the diameter of 17,5 em., with the same subject, and itis likely to be that in the connection with it there was made a liturgical covering with the same iconographical subject. The cross itself was probably a part, the central item, of such 4 covering and it was applied to a, now lost piece of textile. On the painted proscomidian plate from Degani, there are inscriptions. On the rear side of the rather primitive metal covering which is quite different from the good painting on the face of the proscomidian plate, there is a dedicatory inscription mentioning Nikifor, metropolit of Vusitrn. Tt ‘was impossible to find any news concerning this high church official. He could be considered as the donor of the painted proscomidian plate. Owing to the qualities of its painting it should be classified among the works of the post byzantine paintings and stylisticaly it should be dated in the second half of the 16th century or later. ‘The fact that the proscomidian plate is today in Deéani, to which it was ment or given later, leads to the supposal that metropolit Nikifor was in some connection with Deéani. There is not enough evidence that metropolit Nikifor was identical with Nikifor, the prior of Defani monastery, which lived in the second half of the 16th century. At the end of the same century or at the begining of the next, he could have become metropolit of Vutitrn, and as a man of such a rank comanded this pros- comidian plate. The liturgical covering for which we are supposing that the embroided cross was made, could have been created at the same time or something later. According to this, it could be placed at the begining of the 17th century. The whole surface of the cross is filled with compact stiches, which are of zig-zag, alternative, diagonal, chain and full kind. The thread is silver and silver-gilt and sometimes colored thread is used for edges, for the vividness of the composition or for the stressing of the details. The stiches are not always regular, they are mixing one with anothet and it difficult to make difference between them. This is especially emphasized on the background of the branches of the cross and partly on the background of the central locket. The essential characteristic of this work is the balanced plasticity of the whole surface. Ana- lysing the technique of this embroidery and comparing it with other pieces in our country and the near-by regions, it is possible to discover some similarities in the whole or details, on the embroideries from the 16th or 17th century. The representation of the Virgin with the locket on her bosom, with Christ Emanuel in it, is a well known variant of Oranta, byzantine by origin, known in iconography since carly Christian times. The Virgin of Znamenje, as this iconographical type was called in Russia in later times, appears very often on the icons and less on other objects. The earliest representations of this subject on religious embroideries was that on the aer from. St. Clement at Ohrid (XIV—XV century). ‘The way of the framing of this composition is often found in wall paintings and icons of the post byzantine period, but the shape of the locket with Christ Emanuel is comparatively rare. The shape of this locket is connected with postbyzantine painting and is of big interest for_us, as it appears on both objects from the same monastery, a detail that connects them. The outline of the outer locket is also similar, the one on the embroidery, which might had have as a model, or as an inspiration, the painted proscomidian plate, shows clearly stylization, deformation and even some incompletness. Comparing the characteristics of these two compositions, not forgeting the differencies of the technical nature, we may notice similarities. As for the coloristic solutions of the both compositions there are some élements that are common to both. The ground hues on the embroidery are gold and silver with details in other colors, forming corresponding reflexes, while the color scheme on the proscomidian 39 plate is more varied, with the colored background. If we compare pictorial qualities on the two objects, ‘we notice that they are limited to the drawing on the cross, but the level on the proscomidian plate is much higher. The drawing on the cross is less sure, more naive and more rustical. The painted pros- comidian plate was made by a person which was complet as an artist, while as for the cross it could bbe hardly said, If we compaie composition of the cross fom Detani, with the same representations ‘on smaller objects and on mural paintings, comparisions could be made chronologicaly, with the monuments from the middle of the 16th century, till the middle of the next. On embroideries this iconographical subject is very rare, it is more often found as a detail on other scens. Resuming iconographical and stylistical characteristics of the painted proscomidian plate and of the cross, we are able to notice that there are no definite analogies with a certain workshop or with an artist. As it is known that in the second half of the 16th century, in De¥ani worked the well known painter of that time, Longin, it could be possible that this proscomidian plate might be ascribed to the group of his colaborators or followers. Final conclusions could be brought after more detailed investigations of the same period, which has been up to this day, in a state of preliminary works. Analogies are found in the whole Balkan area, the fact quite understandible if we know confessional, ‘atistic and political background of that time’in this part of Europe. ‘The composition on the painted proscomidian plate is encircled by a slavic inscription embossed at the edge. The ornaments in the branches of the cross are more developed in the Tower branch of the ‘ross. The ornament of the horizontal and upper part consists of half palmette, painted unskilfuly, ‘with the intention to fill in the rest of the space, The rinceau with half palmettes is often found in byzantine and post byzantine art. It shows no peculiarity for it is well represented as a decorative clement on many monuments, Iudging after the drawing of the ornament on the embroided cross itis noticable a certain loss of naturalism, which brought to inevitable stylisation and occasional deformations. This way of orna- ‘mental composition is not suitable for an uninterrupted band and it is the reason that it suits well to the decoration of the cross. Ornamental resemblances given here were found on older monuments, but some changes and deformations leads us to the supposal that it is not only the result of the artist’s clumsiness, but at the same time the result of the big distances and of the possible change of ‘the original model. The embroided cross from Deéani is not an excellent representative of church embroideries, but owing to its conceptions, technical and artistical characteristics, it belongs to more interesting art objects of the post byzantine period. Iconographical subject on it is rarely met on embroideries — mostly on epigonatia, although it is more often a detail on the scenes of Virgin's hymn (Acathiste), on stolas and manikia, The composition with the Virgin of Znamenje type, was the central repre- sentation of the now lost liturgical covering from the church of St. Clement at Ohtid, which is, after N. P. Kondakov much earlier in the date from the emroided cross. ‘The fact that the cross was found in one of our biggest monasteries, doesn't serve at the same time as the sure evidence of its origin. To Degani were brought art objects from far away places, donated to the monastery by the travellig monks and pilgrims. We could not neglect, if we suppose, that this cross was made in the connection with the proscomidian plate of the same monastery, that it was ment for Deéani, or possibly done in, or near by workshops. Its place of origin can't be defined with certainity, regarding its characteristics and owing to the stage of knowlege of this artistic activity in our country’and in the countries close to ours.
