As work on t{l Tom Lantos Devil's Slide Tunnel continues, I want to bring to your attention concerns
raised by San Mateo County Coastside residents about the possibility of accidents if plans for the
construction of an at-grade crossing just south of the tunnel moves forward.

The Mid-Coast Community Council (MCC), an advisory body to the administration of San Mateo
County, is alanned that drivers heading south on the highway and exiting the tunnel will not have
sufficient time to adjust their eyes to sunlight before they reach the at-grade pedestrian crossing. In
addition, they have concerns that a traffic signal or stop sign in that location will create a bottleneck,
backing traffic up nearly to the tunnel exit. An above- or below-grade crossing would resolve these issues
and provide greater safety to pedestrians, cyclists and motorists.

I encourage you to give thoughtful consideration to the concerns raised by the MCC about the safety of
motorists, pedestrians and bicyclists around the Devil's Slide Tunnel.

As the representative of the San Mateo County Coastside community in the State Assembly, I look
forward to the completion of this project so that residents and visitors to our community have a safe and
reliable driving route along the coast. I appreciate the dedication CalTrans' staff has shown through the
planning and construction phases of this monumental project. Thank you again for the hard work you do
on behalf of Californians each and every day.

Thank you for your consideration of this request.
