Lesson: Let’s practise! – Unit 6

Aims of the lesson:

1. to revise the language learnt in the Unit 6;

2. to activate previously acquired vocabulary and language;
3. to provide guidance in practising the vocabulary and language;
4. to identify weak areas and provide opportunities for consolidation;
5. to obtain feedback on individual pupils.

Objectives:
By the end of the lesson, pupils will be better able to:
1) use previously acquired vocabulary and language in new contexts;
2) talk about fruit and vegetables;
3) make up sentences and short dialogues using the acquired vocabulary and language;
4) reproduce oral messages about personal experience.

Materials: CD, laptop, flashcards, textbooks, notebooks, fruit/vegetables templates, board,

baskets, crayons
Skills: Listening, speaking, reading and writing
Techniques: Exposing, conversation, exercise, explanation, reflection

Predicted problems and possible solutions:

- there are a few students who have a lower English level – they will get extra guidance from the
teacher and help from their mates;
- some pupils might feel nervous and reluctant to participate in the activity, thus they may need
assistance

 STAGES OF THE LESSON

1. Warm-up

Aim:
- to create a relaxed and pleasant atmosphere

Time: 3 minutes
Interaction: T - pupils, pupils -T
Procedure:
Teacher greets the pupils, asks them about their mood and the pupils answer. Teacher checks
the attendance.

2. Lead-in

Aim:
- to introduce the topic of the lesson

Time: 5 minutes
Interaction: T- pupils
Procedure:
T. announces the pupils that they will have a revision lesson, in order to consolidate Unit 6 in
their textbook.

Teacher informs the pupils about the lesson’s aims and writes the title Let’s practise! and the
date on the board. Pupils copy them in their notebooks.
T. asks them if they remember the song Rainbow food and the pupils answer. T. plays the
song and encourages them to sing along.

3. Revision of the theoretical part

Aim:
- to activate previously acquired vocabulary and language;
- to consolidate the language learnt in the Unit 6

Time: 10 minutes
Interaction: T - pupils, pupils –T
Procedure:
T. tells the pupils that they will play the game Bit by bit, using the flashcards with fruit and
vegetables. T. takes one of the flashcards and covers the front of it with a sheet of paper. T. holds
it up to the class and gradually reveals the flashcards so the children can guess what it is. The
pupils take turns to guess the words.
 After the game, T. shows them the tomatoes flashcard and asks them: Are tomatoes fruit or
vegetables? Some pupils will say that it’s a vegetable, other will say that it’s a fruit. T. explains
that fruits usually have seeds, whereas vegetables don’t.

Then, she asks two pupils to come to the front and she gives each of them a basket, one for
fruit and the other one for vegetables. T. continues with the other flashcards, asking other pupils
to come, in turn, to the front of the class, to put each flashcard in the right basket and to name
them by saying: eg. Tomatoes are fruit.

T. writes the words Fruit and Vegetables on the board in two columns and the pupils come,
one by one, to write on the board the names of the fruit and vegetables in the correct column.

5. Vocabulary guided practice

Aims:
- to provide guidance in practising the previously acquired vocabulary;
- to identify weak areas and provide opportunities for consolidation;

Time: 10 minutes
Interaction: T - pupils, Individual work, Group - class
Procedure:
Ex. 2 / page 22. T. writes the number 22 on the board and asks the pupils to open their
textbooks at page twenty-two. T. refers the pupils to the picture and says the instructions. T.
points to the picture of the child and reads out the example. T. focuses the pupils’ attention on
the use of Mr for man and Mrs for woman.

T. hands out to each pupil a fruit / vegetable template and asks them to colour the templates
with the appropriate colours. After the pupils finish colouring, T. shows them her model, says
I’m Mrs. Orange. I’m a fruit and guides them through holding and presenting their
fruit/vegetables characters.

6. Language guided practice

Aims:
- to provide guidance in practising the previously acquired language;
- to identify weak areas and provide opportunities for consolidation.

Time: 10 minutes
Interaction: T - pupils, Pair work
Procedure:
T. asks the pupils to look at the exercise 3 / page 23, refers them to the picture and reads the
instructions. T. points to the picture of the children and reads out the example. T. explains the
activity and asks two pairs to ask and answer questions as in the example. Then, she allows the
rest of the class some time to do the same, in pairs. The pupils ask and answer in pairs, while the
T. walks around the class monitoring.
 eg. Erica: What’s your favourite fruit?
David: Orange! I love oranges!
David: What’s your favourite vegetable?
Erica! Carrot! I love carrots!

7. Feedback

Aims:
- to obtain feedback on individual pupils;
- to reward the pupils for their answers and for having participated actively in class.

Time: 5 minutes
Interaction: T - pupils, pupils - T
Procedure:
T. asks the pupils to tell her how they feel about the unit. T. asks if they can tell her what
they have learnt and which activity they liked the best. Pupils answer individually.
T. praises the pupils for having participated actively in class and rewards them with positive
points in her register.

8. Homework assignment

Aim:
- to provide further practice of the previously acquired vocabulary and language

Time: 2 minutes

Interaction: T - pupils

Procedure:
T. writes on the blackboard ex. 4 / page 23 as homework. T. explains the task and asks the
pupils to do it on a separate paper and to put it in their portfolio.
