Course Description:
This course is designed to be an overview of the major functions of management. Emphasis is
on planning, organizing, leading, and controlling. Upon completion, students should be able
to work as contributing members of a team utilizing these functions of management.

Learning Outcomes:
At the completion of the course requirements, the student will be able to:
 Define the concept of management and discuss why organizations are needed, why
managers are necessary, and why management is a challenge.
 Explain why planning is needed in organizations and why long-term objectives are
necessary for successful planning.
 Identify and differentiate between the various tools and processes used in planning;
compare the advantages and disadvantages of the participatory approach to planning.
 Identify the essential characteristics of decision making and indicate the range and
types of decisions a manager is asked to make.
 Differentiate between the various types of organizational structures and patterns.
 Explain the importance of delegation in organizations and describe the relationship
between authority, responsibility and accountability.
 Analyze the leadership function, recognizing leadership as the relationship between a
supervisor and subordinates in an organizational environment.
 Recognize the link between planning and controlling, and the various means by which
managers measure and compare performance to objectives.
 Explain why financial controls are used by organizations as the predominant means of
control.
Course Requirements
The course is designed with the combination both theoretical and practical knowledge which
demands more involvement of the learners. The teaching style will be more interactive and
experience sharing. Both Individual and Team work will be the integral part of the course.
The course is demanding and the success of the course is depending on the level of
commitment and active involvement of the learners.
Exams
There will be two mid-term exams and a final exam that will consist of materials provided
during the class and text books. No make-up mid-term exam will be taken of any student who
does not appear at the exam without any valid reason.
Class Participation

 Class participation is critical to learning and demonstrating their level of


understanding. Therefore, the learners are expected to contribute to class discussion
by sharing their viewpoint, comments and questions.
 Class attendance is mandatory. Absences will require prior notification with the
exception of emergencies. Accumulated unexcused absences will result in a lower
grade

1. Introduction of Management: Definition of management-Nature, purpose and


principles of management – Need for organizations and managers- Managerial
responsibility- Types of managers - Management process – Skills – Managerial roles
– Concept of productivity, effectiveness and efficiency – Managerial and
organizational performance.

2. Environment: Internal and external environment of organizations – Components of


external environment – Elements of direct action environment - Elements of indirect
action environment – International environment – Managing environment.

3. Planning: Nature of Planning – Types of planning – Steps in planning – Tools and


techniques for planning – The planning process.

4. Objectives: Nature of objectives – Management by Objectives (MBO) – The process


of MBO – Setting objectives – Benefits and weakness of MBO.

5. Decision Making: Decision Making Process – Problem and opportunity finding –


Nature of managerial decision making – Other factors in decision making – Decision
Support Systems.

6. Organizing: Organizational structure – Division of works – Span of management –


Departmentalization – Line and Staff – Delegation of authority – Centralization and
decentralization – Coordination – Committee and group decision making.

7. Leading: Human factors in managing- Relevant theories – Creativity and innovation –


Motivation – Leadership.

8. Controlling: Meaning and importance of control – Types of control methods – Control


process – Requirements of effective controls – Information systems and control.
Presentation Evaluation Criteria:

Attendance, Appearance, Confidence level, Tone, Eye contract, Gesture, Posture, Slide
quality, Content, Controlling power of audience, Pronunciation, Speaking, Time Management

Assignment Evaluation Criteria:

 Proper Format, Organization, and Presentation of information

 Realness, Correctness, and Relevancy of the Content
