HANDOUT 1
MAIN TOPIC: LOVE FOR GOD
SUBTOPIC: Making a Stand for the Good

Making a Stand for the Good

People differ in their way of looking at things because of different backgrounds,

experiences, interests, and orientation. Tolerance must be practiced in dealing with people
whose opinions or points of view from us. Let us respect other people’s point of view, no matter
how different they are from ours.

Let us learn to say “no” to our uncontrolled cravings and selfishness desires. They
constantly demand appropriate control. If we continue to satisfy our cravings and desires, we
weaken our self-control. Learning to distinguish between what is needed and what is
unnecessary will help us develop self-control.

Self-control enables us to handle our feelings and desires. The first step in gaining self-
control is to identify the areas in our lives that are out of control. Let us have a close look at
the food we eat, the bad habits we have, the character traits we possess, and the overall
direction of our lives.

The following are tips or suggestions on how we can discipline, make things happen, and take
full control of ourselves.
▪ Let us make a personal inventory. We can begin by taking a day-to-day inventory of
our bad habits and destructive cravings or desires.
▪ Let us start small. Let us reduce each habit or craving a little each day. Let us keep a
journal of our progress.
▪ Let us practice self-denial. We deny ourselves in certain pleasure each day. We target
a daily activity like excessive eating or watching television.
▪ Let us keep a schedule. We make a to-do list and stick to it. We make a commitment to
accomplish every task.
▪ Let us review. At the end of each day, we think and critique our performance. We
mentally relive how we exercised self-control over our cravings and habits.

You are already sealed with responsibility of stewardship. To be worthy of this
mission, you must listen before you act, think before you react, earn before you
spend, wait before you criticize, try before you quit, and forgive before you pray so
that you will truly act on what is right.
It is difficult to stand for what is right especially when others seem to
overpower you or if it compromises your friendships with others. In times when you
hesitate to do the right thing, just remember that courageously standing for what is
true is nobler than being friends with people who are bad influences to you and
control with their wrongdoings. As you grow, develop this kind of attitude so that
you will be able to withstand the challenges that you will encounter in achieving
your future goals.
