Ideal Gas Law Notes

Kinetic Molecular Theory

• For this theory to work, we have to assume that gases are ideal and follow the gas laws
exactly.
Ideal Behaviors of Gases:

Ways to describe an Ideal Gas:

P = pressure (atm, mmHg, kPa)
V= volume (L)
T = temperature (K)

*Temperature must be in Kelvin.

**Volume must be in Liters.

Ideal Gas Law Equation:

Under what circumstances does the ideal gas law not work:
Practice

1. What volume will 0.5 moles of nitrogen occupy at 624 mm Hg and 127.0 oC?

2. How many moles of oxygen will occupy a volume of 5.0 liters at 7.0 atm and -73 oC?

3. How many moles of nitrogen will occupy a volume of 9.2 liters at 980 mmHg and 32 oC?

4. (Challenge) Calculate the mass of air that is needed to fill a 246.3 mL flash to a pressure of 1.00
atm at 27°C. (The average molar mass of air is 28.97 g/mol). (You must calculate moles first and
then convert to grams).
