Exploring Jiufen

The food, culture, and history of the village of Jiufen


Jiufen is a small village located in the mountains near the
neighboring town of Ruifang. It contains a rich history and
many sights to behold

History
Jiufen was an isolated village that had 9 families. Every
time shipments arrive to town, they would request nine
portions, Thus the name “Jiufen”
In 1890, workers near the area discovered gold while
constructing railway between Taipei and Keelung,
which started a small gold rush in the area. This was
when Jiufen began to develop into a town. Jiufen
features many Japanese styles of architecture due to the
Japanese colonization from 1895-1945.

Jiufen Old Street


J iufen Old Street is a small alley that branches off into even
smaller alley ways. Jiufen Old Street has many small
restaurants, food stands, and tea houses.
Food recommendations include taro balls, fried seafood,
peanut ice cream roll, and Taiwanese sausages.
